Learn Hebrew with HebrewPod101.com! You are walking through the streets, enjoying your time off from school and work, when suddenly, you hear crying and yelling just ahead. As you get closer, you see a Hebrew storeowner and a teenage boy screaming loudly at each other! The storeowner is very angry and throws his arms around in fury. You look around you for answers from the crowd...no one is helping in any way. Crying, the teenager sits at a nearby bench, moping. But the storeowner follows him and starts pushing him, yelling more loudly! You don't know what to do...but you feel you should do something. Pulling out your cell phone, you call the Hebrew police station - they can handle it. The dispatcher on the other end asks you in Hebrew, "I know you dislike what you hear, but please describe the scene for me so I can tell the police." You explain in Hebrew, "There is a teenage boy, crying and moping. I see a very angry storeowner, yelling and complaining. And there is a scared woman running away, clutching her child to protect him." Within minutes, the police arrive and have the situation under control. Don't forget to stop by HebrewPod101.com for more great Hebrew Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- אילת אילת היא עיר נמל ותיירות הנמצאת בחלקה הדרומי של ישראל. העיר נקראה בעברה אום רשרש, ובעבר הרחוק יותר בשם עציון גבר. אילת נכבשה בשנת 1949, נוסדה כישוב אזרחי בשנת 1952 והוכרזה כעיר בשנת 1959. מוקדי המשיכה העיקריים בה הם תנאי אקלים נוחים בעונת החורף, נוף המפגיש בין מדבר והרים וכמובן ים סוף וחופו. אילת סמוכה לעקבה שבשליטת ירדן ולטאבה שבשליטת מצרים. היא העיר הרביעית בגודל שטח שיפוטה בישראל. אילת מוגדרת כ"אזור סחר חופשי"משנת 1985, והיא העיר הדרומית ביותר במדינת ישראל. בשנת 1934, עוד לפני קום המדינה, הגיע דוד בן-גוריון לאום-רשרש והיה ראשון החולמים על הפיכתה של אילת לעיר נמל בינלאומית. העיר אילת הישראלית הוקמה כישוב קטן בתחילת שנות ה-50. באותה העת, התגוררו בה מספר עובדי נמל, אנשי צבא ואסירים משוחררים בלבד. התחבורה לעיר הייתה קשה ונעשתה דרך מצפה רמון, או באמצעות מטוסים קלים שנחתו במנחת בסמוך לישוב.שדה התעופה של אילת נחנך ב-28 בפברואר 1950 . אילת קיבלה תנופה בעקבות מבצע קדש, והיא החלה להתפתח גם בתור מועצה מקומית, בזכות הנמל שלה ויופיה. מלחמת ששת הימים הפכה את אילת לעיר מעבר בדרך לסיני. למרות שמבחינה תיירותית, היא עמדה בצלם של מקומות כגון שארם א- שייח'. הנסיגה הישראלית מסיני במסגרת הסכם השלום עם מצרים, החזירה את אילת למקומה התיירותי הבלעדי לחופי הים האדום, בעיקר מבחינת הישראלים. לאורך שנות ה-80 וה-90 נבנו בעיר בתי מלון חדשים, בהם בתי מלון מפוארים. למרות זאת, המחיר היחסית גבוה של הלינה בעיר, בהשוואה לטורקיה או סיני, הביאו ישראלים רבים להעדיף שלא לנפוש בעיר. גם הסכם השלום עם ירדן, היטיב בעיקר עם שכנתה הירדנית של אילת, עקבה, ופחות עם העיר הישראלית. ----Formal English---- Eilat Eilat is a city in Israel's southern district. It is a harbor and tourism city. It used to be called "Umm Rashrash" and "Etzion Gaver" in the more distant past. Eilat was conquered in 1949, established as a civilian settlement in 1952, and declared a city in 1959. Its main attractions are the Red Sea and its beach, comfortable climate in the winter, and a view in which the desert meets the mountains. Eilat is close to Taba, which is under Egypt's control, and Aqaba, which is in Jordan. It is the fourth biggest city in Israel in terms of jurisdiction area. Since 1985, it has been defined as a "duty-free trading zone." It is the southernmost city of Israel. David Ben Gurion, even prior to the country's establishment in 1934, arrived at Umm Rashrash and was the first to dream about turning it into an international harbor city. The Israeli city of Eilat was first established as a small settlement in the 50s. At that time, only a few harbor workers, military men, and discharged prisoners lived there. The transportation to the city was difficult and was carried through Mitzpe Ramon using light jets, which landed at a landing zone nearby. On February 28, 1950, an airport was established in Eilat. The Suez Crisis war gave Eilat momentum and it started to develop as a local council due to its harbor and beauty. The Six-Day War made it a passage city into Sinai. However, tourist-wise it was overshadowed by places such as Sharm el-Sheikh. Israel's withdrawal from Sinai due to a peace treaty with Egypt put it back in its touristic spot in the Red Sea's shores, mainly for Israelis. New hotels were built in the city throughout the 80s and 90s, some of which were fancy. Despite its touristic development, due to a relatively high price of lodging compared to Turkey or Sinai, many Israelis prefer not to go on vacation in the city.
