Vroeg in zijn carrière werkte hij voor een kunstkoopman die hem door heel Nederland meenam op zijn reizen. Tenslotte vestigde hij zich in Delft en trouwde er in 1654. Ze hadden zeven kinderen. Tijdens zijn verblijf in Delft, studeerde de Hooch blijkbaar bij Nicholaes Maes en Carel Fabritius aan de Delftse School. Hij werd lid van het Gilde van St. Lucas en verhuisde daarna in 1661 naar Amsterdam. De meeste van de Hooch's vroege schilderijen tonen soldaten in verschillende omgevingen, vooral in tavernes of stallen, maar wat interessant is aan deze vroege stukken, is niet het onderwerp. Kunsthistorici zijn in staat om de ontwikkeling van zijn stijl op te sporen door middel van deze werken. Nadat de Hooch en zijn vrouw kinderen kregen, stapte het onderwerp van soldaten over naar familiescènes. De Hooch wordt nu gedacht een leerling geweest te zijn van Jan Vermeer, de Nederlandse meester die in Delft leefde rond dezelfde tijd. Historici hebben ooit gedacht dat het juist omgekeerd was, maar nuances in de stukken van beide mannen lijken erop te wijzen dat het eerste waar is. Het enige stilistische element waar de Hooch bekend om staat, is het perspectief dat in zijn schilderijen te zien is. Veel van zijn werken geven een kijkje door een raam of doorheen een hal naar een kamer die verder weg ligt. Het geeft mensen die naar zijn schilderijen kijken een zeker gevoel van voyeurisme. Vaak heeft wat de Hooch op het doek zet verborgen betekenissen en gaat het om veel meer dan wat in het schilderij is weergegeven. ----Formal English---- Pieter de Hooch Dutch Golden Age painter Pieter de Hooch was born in 1629 in Rotterdam. Early in his career he worked for an art merchant who took him on trips all over the Netherlands. Finally, he settled in Delft and married in 1654. He and his wife had seven children. While living in Delft, de Hooch apparently studied with Nicholaes Maes and Carel Fabritius at the Delft School. He joined the Guild of St. Luke and then moved to Amsterdam in 1661. Most of de Hooch's early paintings show soldiers in various surroundings, especially taverns or stables, but what's interesting about these early pieces is not the subject matter. Art historians are able to trace the development of his style through these works. After de Hooch and his wife started having children, the subject switched from soldiers to family scenes. De Hooch is now considered to have been a student of Jan Vermeer, a Dutch art master who lived in Delft at the same time as him. Historians once believed that it was the other way around, but nuances in the pieces created by both men seem to indicate that the former is true. The one stylistic element de Hooch is known for is the perspective that can be seen in his paintings. Many of his works feature a peek through a window or down a hall into a room that's farther away. It gives those who look at his paintings a sense of voyeurism, in a way.
