Hij werd in 1597 geboren nabij Antwerpen en verhuisde naar Haarlem. Zijn zoon, Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem, werd ook schilder, hoewel hij zich gespecialiseerde in landschappen in plaats van stillevens. Er zijn niet veel details bekend over zijn leven buiten het feit dat hij een zoon had. Het vroege werk van Claesz bestond uit zeer heldere kleuren, maar later in zijn carrière stapte hij over naar een donkerder palet. Hij probeerde altijd om zijn schilderijen zo echt mogelijk te maken, en hij gebruikte hij licht en schaduw om beelden van wat dan ook te schilderen. He was born near Antwerp in 1597 and moved to Haarlem. His son, Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem, also became a painter, although he specialized in landscapes rather than still life images. Not many details are known about his life other than the fact that he had a son. Claesz's early work consisted of very bright colors, although later in his career he switched to a darker palette. He always aimed to make his paintings as real as possible, and he used light to do this when he painted images of anything. Texture was also a very important part of the realism he employed in his works. He is credited with leading the development of tabletop images in monochrome. "Breakfast Still Life" and "Still Life with a Burning Candle" are two of his most important monochromatic works. Another element of the still life paintings turned out by Claesz is the spiritual world. He could imbue his paintings with mystery by including a skull on a table. One of his most well-known paintings was "Vanitas," a 1625 painting which features a skull, a lit candlestick, a flower, and a few other items lying on a table. Allegory was a major theme for his works. For example, a skull was meant to symbolize mortality. Today Claesz's work can be found in museums all over the world, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
