De boeken werden gelezen in 10 verschillende landen over de hele wereld, en in aanvulling op twee verschillende versies van film, werd er ook een musical en een tv-serie gemaakt van de boeken. Hoewel de versie uit 1955 van de film houdt de nummer drie blijft op de lijst van films met het hoogste kassucces in de Nederlandse filmgeschiedenis, is de versie uit 1984 eigenlijk meer bekend. De versie uit 1984 is eigenlijk de 9de beste film op basis van kassa-opbrengst sinds 1945, waardoor het de enige film is die op die lijst twee van de top 10 plaatsen bekleedt. Guido Pieters regisseerde de versie uit 1984, met Danny de Munk als Ciske, Willeke van Ammelrooy als moeder Ciske, en Herman Van Veen als Bruis, Ciske's leraar. Aan het begin van de film, wordt Ciske voorgesteld als een onruststoker die ook om mensen lijkt te geven. Hij giet inkt over het hoofd van zijn leraar, en toch, als een door polio verlamde jongen naar zijn school wordt overgeheveld, hij is de enige die aardig tegen hem is. Ciske's vader is een zeeman, die de meeste van de tijd weg op zee is , en zijn moeder, die misbruik van hem maakt en hem verwaarloost, leidt een ontuchtige levensstijl in afwezigheid van zijn vader.
