125: Universalism: thoughts of William Barclay Guest Host: Don Ormsby, hosting this night (2015-02-15) Van Hale. Don quoted from William Barclay, a Presbyterian, a well-know New Testament scholar, New Testament translator, author of a 20 volume New Testament commentary and numerous historical and doctrinal books. His view on Universalism (that ultimately almost, or all, of the human family will find its way into God's kingdom) is closer to Joseph Smith's view than that of Calvin. The following are some of the topics from several of the callers: Atheist claims that the LDS Church has been dramatically altered from its original foundation One Claims no evidence that anyone has seen the Golden Plates Comments on John Dehlin's being disfellowshipped This claim that LDS are not to quote the past Prophets A non-Mormon told of his study with the Book of Mormon it leads one to pursue the life and teachings of Jesus Another claims that Elder McConkie placed homosexuality close to murder; that Jesus placed one who should lust in his heart, is an adulterer, but that Pres. Following are several points discussed: One purpose of the Book of Mormon The failure of the first 116 pages What happened Could Joseph fail? Could he succeed? What was a part of his Plan beyond the Book of Mormon? Who would be involved in the project? Could the project succeed after Martin Harris' blunder? Todd Christofferson, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland and Elder Dallin H. Oaks, both of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Sister Neill Marriott of the Young Women general presidency spoke about religious freedom during the press conference. PLURAL MARRIAGE: Brian Hales, (researcher, editor & author) joined with me tomorrow night (Sun • Jan 11 • 5-7 pm MST) to discuss his new book. His wife, Laura, also participated adding her thoughts to the discussing. Two years ago, he published a 3 volume set on Joseph Smith's introduction to plural marriage including all known sources. Just recently he uploaded all of these sources available for those interested in what is by far the most comprehensive collection.  This April 2015 his new book will be available 350 pages to condense the 3 volume set to be more readable for a larger audience.
