Malo and welcome to Season 3 Episode 89 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this cloudy but beautiful Friday morning 30 December 2022, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ! In rugby union – our rugby predictions for 2023: Team Fijiana to defend their Australian title. The Fijian Drua to win their first Super Rugby Australia title and following in the footsteps of Toa Samoa, the Flying Fijians and Manu Samoa to make the Rugby World Cup 2023 semifinals in France. The All Blacks to lose Scott Razor Robertson as Head Coach to somewhere else. Eddie Jones to pop up at the Rugby World Cup in France 2023 in a surprising move! In rugby league – the Dolphins have so far missed out on the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Reece Walsh and Cameron Munster and are desperate to land a marquee man to show they mean business. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck could be the ideal candidate to fill the Fullback and marquee man roles in one go. Wayne Bennett and the Dolphins are also reportedly keen to make Toa Samoa star, Stephen Crichton their Fullback, but face stiff competition from the Panthers and the Bulldogs for his signature and may struggle to lure him away from his family based in Sydney. In boxing – the WBO has moved very quickly to demand “a detailed medical explanation” from Jermell Charlo of his broken hand, within five days, or face the possibility of being stripped of his title, after his defence against Aussie challenger, Tim Tszyu in Las Vegas on 29 January was postponed indefinitely. And did you know - that the NFL has media rights deals worth a total US$113Billion over 11 seasons? Well they do and with some of the biggest broadcasters in the world – CBS, NBC Disney, FOX, and Amazon. That’s right Amazon has exclusive rights to stream “Thursday Night Football” — the first time a tech company has held exclusive NFL rights. In football – fans at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar spent 39% more on in-stadium purchases than the 2018 World Cup in Russia, according to data from Visa — the tournament’s official payment provider. Only Visa-branded cards were accepted for in-stadium purchases during the tournament across its eight stadiums in Qatar. And even though their teams didn’t even make the final, fans from the US, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and the UK spent the most money at the World Cup. The iconic final between France and Argentina generated the most spending of any game. What were they all buying if there was no alcohol on sale? Me thinks Coca-Cola to mix with the rum they all smuggled in? In rugby union – the Italian Rugby Federation said yesterday that Treviso have suspended an unnamed player after black prop Cherif Traore received a rotten banana as a Christmas gift. Traore, a 28-year-old Italian international, who was born in Guinea, was given the present on Tuesday during a Secret Santa exchange and he posted on social media that he had been “hurt” by the “offensive” gesture. “What hurt me most was seeing most of my mates laughing as if everything is normal,” he posted on Instagram. In rugby league – hundreds of families and fans of the Toa Samoa rugby league team waited for over two hours at Fale’olo International Airport in the early hours of yesterday morning and broke into the national anthem as their 2022 Rugby League World Cup heroes emerged from the arrivals lounge. Melbourne Storm 2022 Season Review: While the Storm appeared on track to challenge for the 2022 title with 11 wins in their opening 14 games; injuries and rep games came back to bite them. From then on it was a rollercoaster season both on and off field with a loss in the opening week of the finals landing the KO punch. In boxing – undefeated WBA Lightweight World Champion, Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Florida yesterday and booked into Broward County jail. It is unclear if his arrest will affect his 7th January fight against Hector Luis Garcia. In football – the US Women’s Soccer Team claimed a big win in its fight for equal pay after the “Equal Pay for Team USA” Act was passed by the House of Representatives. The bill ensures equal compensation and benefits for all athletes representing the USA in more than 50 international sports. The bill is an outcome of a gender discrimination lawsuit filed in 2019 against US Soccer. Earlier this year, the US Women’s National Soccer Team signed a new collective bargaining agreement for pay structures that equates to the Men’s team through 2028. Thanks to the new CBA, the women’s team earned US$6.5Million from the Men’s team advancing to the knockout stage in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar — more than the US$6M the Women’s team received from winning the 2015 and 2019 World Cups combined. You’re giving a whole women’s team ONE man’s salary. What a joke.” ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys said of the NRLW’s new and much higher salary cap: “They’ve had the biggest increase of anyone. Don’t forget there are 10 teams, so we’ve invested heavily in the women’s game and rightly so. It has still sparked an angry response from some. So how did the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar measure up? Surrounded by controversy from when it won the bid back in 2012, one can only admire Qatar for the massive investment – US$300Billion in major infrastructure and beautiful stadiums that they built especially for this tournament. Qatar did the Arab world proud and so too did Morocco with their unprecedented run and fourth place finish. Now we can all move on with our lives. Tomorrow morning, they face his PSG teammate and Captain of Argentina, Lionel Messi in a bid to become just the third team in Cup history to go back-to-back, and the first since Brazil in 1962. The Melbourne derby between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory was abandoned yesterday after fans stormed the AAMI Park pitch and a metal bucket was thrown at Melbourne City’s goalkeeper — leaving him with a bloodied face — on a dark day for football in Australia In rugby union – New Zealand Rugby is reviewing their sponsorship agreement with Altrad Group after the French construction engineering company’s founder and Chairman, Mohed Altrad was found guilty in a corruption case in which Bernard Laporte, President of the French Rugby Federation, stepped down as vice-chairman of World Rugby after he received a two-year suspended prison sentence for corruption. In rugby league news – Australian rugby league insiders are tipping the Gold Coast Titans as the NRL Club most likely to be one of two to have reached out to sacked England rugby union Head Coach, Eddie Jones with a view to signing him up. And the other Club? Sorry mate I dunno. In boxing – former WBA regular heavyweight champions, Mahmoud Charr and Lucas Browne were left stranded in Dubai after their fight collapsed after the Middle East Professional Boxing Commission stepped in on Friday, the day before the bout was scheduled and shut down the event for safety reasons. Safety reasons? Sorry mate I dunno. Malo and welcome to Season 3 Episode 76 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this beautiful blue sky Saturday morning 17 December 2022, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ! In the FIFA World Cup in Qatar – A top level FIFA meeting has given approval for an expanded World Cup of 48 teams from the 2030 World Cup, which means the tournament growing to 104 games from 64 this year. While European teams and leagues, including the English Premier League are expected to take issue with a longer, more taxing tournament, they all know that the FIFA World Cup is the goose that lays the golden egg. The potential growth in earnings from tickets, broadcasts and more from an expanded World Cup, with the likely inclusion of China, will guarantee hundreds of millions more fans and billions more dollars in income. Trust me, come 2030 in wherever, with or without alcohol in the stadiums, they will all be lined up to play. In rugby union – “Everyone knows I love a scrap and I’m up for whatever challenge is next. I’m open to everything in rugby and I’ve made no secret of my wish to give the NRL a go too. Nothing is off the table. It’s all about the right job at the right time and I’ll look at it all,” Eddie Jones in full “show me the money” mode. Apparently “Fast Eddie” has already received ‘serious’ offers from two rugby league Clubs. With a 73 per cent win rate as England Head Coach over seven years – the most successful Coach ever – you gotta wonder why the English sacked him. In rugby league news – Kangaroos second-rower Angus Crichton is free to play for Sydney Roosters in the NRL opening round against the Dolphins after being allowed to serve his Rugby League World Cup two-game suspension in the pre-season. Remember he was suspended for striking Toa Samoa Hooker Chanel Harris-Tavita with his elbow in the World Cup final at Old Trafford. Surely that penalty should be taken more seriously. Would this have happened if it was the other way around and the Samoan was suspended? In boxing – debate continues to rage over the shock unanimous decision win, with all three judges scoring it 29-28, for rising undefeated UFC lightweight star, Paddy Pimblett from Liverpool, England over American veteran Jared Gordon dubbed “highway robbery”. As I said yesterday, if you are a UFC fighter with a large social media following, you win more than you lose. In the WNBA – safely back home in the arms of her wife, WNBA star, Brittany Griner posted on Instagram, “It feels so good to be home! The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn, I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help.” A two-time Olympic gold medalist, Griner was returned to the United States after the Biden administration agreed to swap convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for her. The deal has been criticized by those who believe either that Bout should not have been released, because of a threat he could pose in future, or that additional detainees should have returned home with Griner. Finally the PGA Tour has teamed up with a film producer for a Netflix documentary series featuring several top golfers participating in the 2021-22 season with my cousin Tony Finau expressing his interest in the series. In the FIFA World Cup in Qatar - the whole of the Kingdom of Morocco is furious with Referee Cesar Ramos over his performance during their two nil loss to France in the FIFA World Cup semi-final in Qatar yesterday. So much so, that they have filed an official complaint with FIFA, while Les Bleus advance to the Final against Lionel Messi and Argentina. In rugby union – the Australian Rugby Union could “weaponise” Eddie Jones by bringing him into their Wallabies coaching set-up for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in France next year after “Fast Eddie” was sacked by England last weekend. In rugby league news – Tigers great Benny Elias has told nephew and Eels star Mitchell Moses to shun a mega offer and stay at Parramatta. Elias has put club loyalties aside and told Moses that if he is happy at the Eels, he should stay there rather than return to the Tigers where he debuted in 2014. In boxing – the first media conference between undisputed Super Welterweight champion, Jermell Charlo (35-1) and Aussie challenger, Tim Tszyu (21-0, 15 KO) for all Charlo’s belts on 29 January at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas was weird because it was online rather than live at Charlo’s request.
Malo and welcome to Season 3 Episode 74 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this warm and sunny Thursday morning 15 December 2022, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ! Lionel Messi is the star and darling of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after doing the tango with the Croatian defence for a famous Argentina 3 nil win in their semi final, while we tip Morocco to Mbojango Kylian Mbappe and mango frango France in the second semi today. Go Morocco go. Former England Women’s defender, fashion label brand ambassador and now TV Commentator, Alex Scott got a dressing down from BBC bosses for appearing to promote a designer brand during World Cup coverage. Her outfit was made up of a A$505 orange blazer with matching trousers costing A$305, silk shirt at A$415 topped off with a pair of sequin heels. There is no rugby union and rugby league news – almost 12 hours after national elections closed in Fiji at 6pm yesterday, there is no clear winner with Prime Minister Bainimarama’s Fiji First Party leading with 45.89%, ex-PM Rabuka’s People’s Alliance Party on 32.96%, NFP on 9.33%, SODELPA 4.51% and UNITY 2.56%. In boxing – Tyson Fury has confirmed he’ll spar with Wayne Rooney - currently coaching MLS Club DC United - in preparation for his world title fight against Oleksandr Usyk. “I spoke to Wayne and he’s well up for it,” Fury said. “He’s going to come into camp for about four weeks to help me.” Only in the USA – a growing number of US celebrities including Steph Curry, Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neil, Serena Williams, Jimmy Fallon, Snoop Dogg and Madonna are all are accused of pumping up the value of NFTs and crypto currencies by making false and misleading statements to lure in unsuspecting investors who have lost millions in the recent crash of NFTs and crypto thanks to SBF.
