The Breakdown of the Worst of 2019 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8517

It is finally here, it's our favourite time of the year: The Movie Breakdown's Year-End episodes. It is the time where we form top ten lists to reflect on the year that just passed. This year it will be a three-episode series, because we are also saying good-bye to a decade as well. First, we want to kick it off by looking at the crap that polluted 2019. This week, Scott and I both rank our top ten worst movies of 2019. I skipped out on many of the potential stinkers this year, but I was still bombarded with some bad cinema. After we dance about in the waste, it is time to end the episode on a more positive and optimistic note. We will look ahead to 2020 and both rank our top ten most anticipated movies of the upcoming year. There is a lot of exciting looking movies on the way. This is a huge episode that is over two hours of movie talk. We had a blast recording this episode and we really hope you love it. We also want to thank you for listening to us throughout 2019 and can't wait to provide more shows for you in 2020. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker', '6 Underground', 'The Two Popes', 'The Lighthouse' and Remembering Dann Aiello | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4105

It is our final traditional movie review show of the decade and I can't think of a bigger way to end it. We will be reviewing the movie that is being promoted as the end of a massive nine movie saga in the sweeping space adventure, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We also look at two movies that garnered critical acclaim during the festival circuit in the based on true events The Two Popes and the bizarre period piece horror The Lighthouse. If that isn't enough, we've got ourselves some Bay-hem in the action picture, 6 Underground. It is the kind of show where we have both best of the year and worst of the year candidates. We also take some time to look at the inspirational career of character actor Danny Aiello. We apologize for the show being delayed again this week, but we got swept away a bit by some of Santa's magic dust. Before that happened, we had a great time recording this episode and we really hope you love it. We also wish you a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Jumanji: The Next Level', 'Jojo Rabbit', 'Marriage Story', 'Arthur Christmas' and 'The Fanatic.' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5120

It is another huge show, as we have a few movies that are destined to make our 2019 year-end lists. We have the big trapped in a video game adventure sequel in Jumanji: The Next Level. We also got some powerhouse directors in Taika Waititi's new satirical, but heartfelt comedy, Jojo Rabbit and Noah Baumbach explores divorce in Marriage Story. Fred Durst rolls out a thing that is best described as a movie, I guess, in the John Travolta starring The Fanatic. We top it off with a family Christmas adventure in Arthur Christmas. It was a great time recording this show for you and we really appreciate you listening to it. The best thing you can do for us is spread the word to other movie fans. Apologies for the show being up late but there were a few technical issues on the host site. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Knives Out', 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood'. 'Earthquake Bird', 'The Hole in the Ground' and 'Avengement' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5260

It is another huge show as was we have five movie reviews and two of them are gunning for some Oscar recognition. One of my favourite modern directors Rian Johnson is dipping into the whodunit realm with the murder mystery, Knives Out. We have Tom Hanks playing another real-life person with this time it being the wonderful Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood. Then we have some 2019 indy release including the Alicia Vikander starring relationship thriller Earthquake Bird, the latest creepy kid horror in The Hole in the Ground and a revenge action picture, Avengement. We had a blast recording this episode and we really hope you love it. If you do, please help us out by spreading the word to other movie fans. Thank you so much for continued support.  The Breakdown of 'The Irishman', 'Midnight Express', 'Arctic', 'Girls Trips' and 'About Time' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5960

I can't believe we're marching towards the end of another year. This week we have a wide assortment of different movies we discuss and review this week. The big one is Martin Scorsese's return to the gangster epic realm in The Irishman. We also review a smaller 2019 release in the man vs. nature thriller, Arctic. We go all the way back to the 1970s to discuss a prison drama in Midnight Express. Then we go much lighter with two comedies in the raunchy buddy picture, Girls Trip and the time travelling romantic comedy, About Time. We had another great time recording this episode, even though you may notice we had a few technical issues (one review we had to keep on rerecording and I then turned into Alvin), but we aimed to deliver our usual insight and style of humour. We really hope you loved the episode, and if you want to keep on supporting us then please spread the word on social media about us. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Frozen 2', 'Klaus', 'A Vigilante', 'Sleepless' and 'The Book of Henry' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5743

The Christmas season is upon us, so it is time for some family holiday movies. We have two really big animated family features to discuss. The biggest one is the huge Disney fantasy sequel as we return to Anna and Elsa in Frozen 2. Do you want an origin story of Santa Claus? We have that in the Netflix animated original Klaus. Then we have some stuff that isn't family friendly like the dark dramatic film about an abuse victim seeking out to save women and children from their abusers in A Vigilante. We also review a dark thriller about a corrupt cop trying to rescue his kidnapped son in Sleepless. Then we discuss a movie that we think may have been trying to be a family movie but instead became something very dark and insane in the misguided The Book of Henry. We have a great time recording the show, and we appreciate you listening to us every week. The best way you can show your support is spread the word to other movie buffs. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Ford v. Ferrari', 'Enter the Dragon', 'Let it Snow' and 'Support the Girls' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5813

It is a busy time of year and so we have a jam-packed episode for you. Our new theatrical release is a big Oscar hopeful in the James Mangold directed, Ford v. Ferrari. We also dip into the vault to review the Bruce Lee martial arts classic, Enter the Dragon. We also got a Netflix original in the teen romance holiday movie, Let It Snow. We cap off the reviews with an indy darling from last year in the dramedy Support the Girls. After that, we look at the rise of big budget event TV series like The Mandalorian or the upcoming MCU based series, and we ask if they will have an impact on the importance of big blockbuster movies. As always, we had a great time recording this episode, and we really appreciate you choosing to listen to us. You can show your support by spreading the word about us to other movie fans. Thank you. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'The Blues Brothers', 'The King', 'Loser' and 'The Endless' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5371

We are jumping into the time machine this week on The Movie Breakdown as we record this episode in person just like we did from 2013 to 2016. You know what else we did back then, we often picked a lot of older movies rather than trying to review every Netflix Original movie. We kick off this new era of reviewing some older movies with a bang as we have the horror cult hit that played a part in birthing the slasher genre in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We also have an ambitious comedy that was a huge hit and was the first to turn a successful Saturday Night Live sketch into a feature in The Blues Brothers. We've loved two Amy Heckerling coming-of-age comedies, and so will the streak continue with Loser? We still have a Netflix Original to review in the historical epic, The King. Finally, we discuss a twisty thriller mixed with horror indy picture in The Endless. As always, we really appreciate you listening to us this week and we hope you love the show. If you do, then please support use by spreading the word to other movie fans. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).  The Breakdown of 'Terminator: Dark Fate', 'Dolemite if My Name', 'The Laundromat' 'Fractured' and 'Eli' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5431

Can you believe we are in November already? It has almost been another year of The Movie Breakdown and this week we're bringing you five movie reviews. The cool thing among all the kids is having sequels that retcon out all the sequels we don't like and so, we have Terminator: Dark Fate, the movie that wants you to believe there has only been two previous movies in the series. Speaking of erasing the past, who said that Eddie Murphy was in a slump and this week we look at the movie designed to make the comedian relevant again in the comedic biopic Dolemite is My Name. We also have the second Steve Soderbergh movie this year, this time in the Meryl Streep starring The Laundromat. Then we cap off the show with two thrillers in the Sam Worthington starring Fractured and the flick about a spooky kid in Eli. We had a blast recording the show this week and we really hope you love it. If you do, then we really ask that you please spread the word about the show to other movie fans. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: Terminator: Dark Fate ** (CS) Dolemite is My Name ***½ (CS & SM) The Laundromat ** (CS & SM) Fractured *½ (CS) & * (SM) Eli *½ (CS) & * (SM)

The Breakdown of Horror - 'Overlord', 'Wish Upon', 'The Cured', 'Under the Shadow, ' and 'Veronica' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4746

Halloween is almost here and so it is time for our annual tradition The Breakdown of Horror, where we review five scary movies. We've got two very different zombie pictures with one being about dealing with the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse in The Cured and then we have those pesky zombies chomping at brains during World War II in Overlord. We also have three movies about hauntings and possessions, and these are as follows: the critically acclaimed Persian language movie, Under the Shadow, the loosely-based on true events Spanish possession flick, Veronica, and the Joey King starring movie about an insidious box that grants wishes, Wish Upon. As always, we had a great time recording the show and we really hope you love it. If you do love it, the best way to show your appreciation is spread the word on social media. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: The Cured ***½ (CS & SM) Overlord *** (CS) & ***½ (SM) Veronica *** (CS & SM) Under the Shadow ***½ (CS) & **** (SM) Wish Upon ** (CS) & **½ (SM)

The Breakdown of 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil', 'Zombieland: Double Tap', 'El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie' and 'In the Shadow of the Moon' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5276

It is a big day in Canada, as it is the Federal Election, which we don't make any mention of on The Movie Breakdown. Because on this podcast, we talk movies (and recording it on Sunday means it wasn't fresh on our minds either) and you can elect to listen to all four of our reviews. The theatre had some big sequels released in the dark-ish Disney fantasy family adventure, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and then we've got a gory comedy sequel not for kids in Zombieland: Double Tap. Netflix doesn't want to be left out of the sequel game, as they have a movie that is a follow-up to the popular Breaking Bad TV series in El Camino. Then it is time to discuss a sci-fi thriller in the noir-ish In the Shadow of the Moon. After that, we look at the huge box office success of Joker and analyze what can be learned by this surprise (at least to me) smash hit. As always, we really appreciate your support, and the best way to allow the show to grow is to share us on social media to other movie buffs. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil **½ (CS) El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie **½ (CS) *** (SM) Zombieland: Double Tap *** (CS) In the Shadow of the Moon *** (CS & SM)

The Breakdown of 'In the Tall Grass', 'Tall Girl', 'Hello Privilege, It's Me, Chelsea' and Remembering Robert Forster | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5920

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian readers and listeners. For everyone else, have a fantastic Monday. To make your Monday fantastic, we have our latest episode of The Movie Breakdown where we will review three movies this week. It is October so you need a horror movie, and so we have the adaptation of the Stephen King and Joe Hill novella, In the Tall Grass. The kids are full into school now, and so why not talk about another coming-of-age story in Tall Girl. Then it is time for a documentary with Chelsea Handler exploring race and white privilege in Hello God, It's Me, Chelsea. We also do our every few-month segment where Scott catches up on a bunch of movies that I've already done solo reviews in the past and we now find out where he stands. Finally, we look back at the career of the great actor Robert Forster. As always, we had a great time recording show, and if you love it, then please help us out by spreading the word to other movie fans. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: In the Tall Grass **½ (CS) & *** (SM) Tall Girl **½ (CS & SM) Hello Privilege, It's Me, Chelsea ***½ (CS)

The Breakdown of 'Joker', 'Between Two Ferns: The Movie', 'Hustlers', and 'Falling Inn Love' | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5420

We're back to reviewing new releases this week and we've got four of them on this episode. It seems like every few months there must be a new comic book movie, but this is one very different, as we look at the gritty, violent origin story of an iconic villain in Joker. We also have another movie geared towards adults with the based on true event tale of strippers that scammed rich wall street types out of lots of money in Hustlers. We also have some comedies including the feature length adaptation of a popular YouTube series in Between Two Ferns: The Movie. It is the time of year where Netflix rolls out cheesy romantic comedies and so then we have to discus Falling Inn Love. Then we analyze the recent comments Martin Scorsese made about comic book movies not being cinema. As always, we had a great time recording the show and we really hope you love it. If you do, the best way to show that appreciation is to spread the word on social media. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: Joker ** (CS) Between Two Ferns: The Movie *** (CS & SM) Hustlers***½ (CS) Falling Inn Love *½ (CS & SM)

The Breakdown Goes Back to School | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4746

It is another special episode this week, and we look at several movies set in school. We are also looking at several movies that by many are considered classics and even defined their decade. We got two John Hughes movies in the Saturday detention comedic drama The Breakfast Club and then the movie about the guy who'd never get stuck in detention, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Then we leave the 1980s to look at a major teen movie of the '90s in Clueless. It may not be as iconic, but it was Emma Stone's breakout role in the 2010 teen comedy Easy A. Just to throw you off, we depart from the coming of age movies and look at Jeremy Saulnier's feature film debut, Murder Party. This week we look at many movies held up as great and we discuss if they deserve that reputation. As always, we really appreciate you listening to us, and if you love the show, please help us out by spreading the word on social media. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Four-Star Rating: The Breakfast Club **** (CS & SM) Clueless ***½ (CS & SM) Ferris Bueller's Day Off *** (CS) & ***½ (SM) Easy A ***½ (CS & SM) Murder Party *** (CS & SM)

The Breakdown of More Reasons for Why We Love Movies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4653

This week we've got another special episode, and this is The Breakdown of More Reasons for Why We Love Movies. This is the sequel to an episode we did a few years ago, and we now have even more things that cause us to be huge movie fans. We could do a show like this a hundred time, because there are so many things that makes movies great. Some of the things we discuss this time are the shared experience you can have, the awesomeness of Denis Villeneuve (who gave us Blade Runner 2049), how memorable moments from movies can stick with you for years and how movies can inspire your own creativity. As always, it was a blast to record and we really hope you love it as well. If you do, please help us out by spreading the word to more movie fans. Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).
