NASCAR legend Kyle Petty and his new book, Swerve or Die | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 411

ABOUT KYLE PETTY AND SWERVE OR DIE Kyle Petty is NASCAR royalty. Son of the legendary "King," Richard Petty, and grandson of one of the founding fathers of the sport, Lee Petty, he has dedicated his life to the most popular form of American auto racing. With his new book, co-written with bestselling author Ellis Henican, SWERVE OR DIE: Life at My Speed in the First Family of NASCAR Racing (St. Martin's Press, on sale date August 9, 2022, $28.99), this beloved member of the first family of American auto racing discusses the sport's origins, how it is navigating the important issues of the day, and what the future will be for the sport. And, that future might just see NASCAR becoming a global leader in "green" vehicles.A champion on and off the track, Petty presents a thoughtful and nuanced book. This is not just an "I raced here; I won there," type of book. Rather, a great portion is devoted to facing down tough issues plaguing the sport, and society. SWERVE OR DIE takes a deep dive into how the great American racing circuit has become so controversial and how it's Southern-bred worldview - the Confederate flag debate, for example - is shaking American life yet again. He is not afraid to pull the curtain back on why the sport is dealing with many wrenching societal issues tearing at its soul and how it will go about handling them. This is the smart NASCAR book that's never been written before. From the dirt tracks of the south and the hard-packed beaches of Daytona FL, to today's Superspeedways, often with 150,000+ fans in attendance, few sports.few businesses.have grown as exponentially as NASCAR. Its future is a hot topic. How does NASCAR attract the next generation (or two) of fans while maintaining the hold it has on old-time fans who helped racing grow into a colossus? Are electric vehicles, and green racing, where the sport is headed? Filled with intensely personal anecdotes and juicy stories about the sport's biggest names, it's also chock full of never-before-seen photos from the Petty family's private collection. This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the sport, as well as the perfect primer for anyone who's ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at all the races. PRAISE FOR SWERVE OR DIE "After all the things Kyle's done, I knew there had to be a book in there somewhere. Well, here it is. And I'll tell you what: Kyle doesn't believe in keeping secrets. Even I learned some things in here. And yeah, his mom deserves all the credit for how he turned out." --Richard Petty "He's lived through the worst possible scenario that could happen to anyone. Imagine going back to Loudon after that! You could throw haymakers at Kyle. He just rolls with it. He's like, 'I'm gonna walk around with a ponytail.I'm gonna sing.I'm gonna say whatever I wanna say on TV.' With that upbeat attitude of his and the way he takes advantage of every opportunity, I do think Kyle has lived the lives of five people combined."--Joey Logano, NASCAR Champion "It's always darkest in the shadow of greatness. Each generation has had to prove itself along the way, and believe me it doesn't get easier. Kyle's story is a uniquely American one about a uniquely America sport. I highly recommend it."-- Jay Leno "Kyle isn't just a racecar driver. He has a powerful voice, a bottomless heart and a real gift for bringing people together. What he's achieved with Victory Junction and the Kyle Petty Charity Ride. It's just incredible. His life story is packed with lessons for all of us."--Herschel Walker "As a competitor, broadcaster, family member and dear friend, Kyle has lived through every era of our sport, impacting the lives of so many along the way. With a heartfelt gift for storytelling, his love for NASCAR...

Marine Major Tom Schueman & his Afgan interpreter Zainullah Zaki, authors of Always Faithful | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 308

ABOUT MARINE MAJOR TOM SCHUEMAN, ZAINULLA ZAKI AND ALWAYS FAITHFULBand of Brothers meets Argo in this dramatic and heartfelt dual memoir of the war in Afghanistan told by two men from opposite worlds.Always Faithful entwines the stories of Marine Major Tom Schueman, and his friend and Afghan interpreter, Zainullah "Zak" Zaki, as they describe their parallel lives, converging paths, and unbreakable bond in the face of overwhelming danger, culminating in Zak and his family's harrowing escape from Kabul. In August of 2021, just days shy of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, America ended its longest war. The speed of the Afghanistan's fall was so stunning that thousands of Afghan citizens who had helped American forces over the course of two decades-and had been promised visas in return-were suddenly stranded, in extreme, imminent danger. As the world watched the shocking scenes of desperation at the Kabul airport in the final two weeks of August, Maj. Tom Schueman fought-both behind the scenes and through a social media campaign-to get his friend and former Afghan interpreter, Zak, out of Afghanistan before he and his family were discovered by the Taliban. When Zak and his family finally took off from the airport mere days before the US left the country, the years-long effort to get Zak to America culminated in two simple words on Instagram: "Wheels up."Now in Always Faithful, Tom and Zak tell the full story of the divergent paths that led them to Afghanistan, the dangerous road they walked together in service to America, and how their commitment to each other ended up saving them both. Brilliantly told in Tom's and Zak's alternating first person voices, Always Faithful tracks the parallel lives of these two men who each spent their childhoods in fear, peril, and poverty, and turned to war in attempt to build a meaningful future. On an inevitable course towards each other, their lives dovetail in Afghanistan's deadly Helmand Valley, where they formed a brotherhood that transcends even the most overwhelming of odds, eventually culminating in Zak's harrowing, eleventh-hour rescue. The end result is an intensely personal and uniquely ground-level account of Tom and Zak's experience,Always Faithful gives readers a 360-degree view of the war. At once provocative and heart pounding, their stories together form a microcosm of the complicated and lasting effects of America's longest war. Through their eyes and their experiences, they challenge readers to explore the legacy of the war for American and Afghan citizens alike, as we all collectively seek to understand whether twenty years of war was worth the price.REVIEWSIn plain old good writing, this book tells how two individuals fought the forces of the Taliban, Afghan corruption, and U.S. government bureaucracy to bring one interpreter's family to safety and freedom. It is a gripping and poignant story of quiet heroism, with a hair-raising ending. You will finish this book feeling triumphant for the few that got out, and angry and sad for the many we shamefully left behind. - Karl Marlantes, author of Matterhorn, What It Is Like to Go to War, and Deep RiverSchueman and Zaki offer a haunting account of the courage and sacrifices of U.S. troops alongside their Afghan partners over the past two decades. Amid the backdrop of America's longest war in history and hopes out of reach, their stories are a testament to the enduring human spirit. - U.S. Senator Dick DurbinA tremendous look inside the relationships forged in combat and the dedication and sacrifice of the Afghans and Marines who served side by side to gain a better future for Afghanistan. This book is honest, compelling, and full of suspense. This book is Honor, Courage, and Commitment at its finest. - Lieutenant General Lori Reynolds, United States Marine Corps (retired), former Deputy Commandant for InformationA...

Oscar winner Lee Grant (Shampoo), featured in new film Killian AandD The ComebackK Kids, in theaters and VOD | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 535

ABOUT LEE GRANT (FROM TCM.COM)An attractive brunette with angular features, Lee Grant began her career as a child performer with NYC's Metropolitan Opera. By age 11, she had become a member of the American Ballet Theatre. After music studies at Juilliard, she won a scholarship to attend the Neighborhood Playhouse and switched her focus to acting. Grant understudied the role of Ado Annie in a touring production of "Oklahoma!" before landing her breakthrough stage role as a young shoplifter in Sidney Kingsley's "Detective Story" in 1949. Hollywood soon beckoned and she recreated the role in William Wyler's 1951 superb film version. Grant won the Cannes Film Festival Best Actress prize and earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for the role. Seemingly on the verge of a brilliant career, the actress found herself the victim of the blacklist when her husband, playwright Arnold Manoff was named before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Grant herself refused to testify and the film offers over the next decade were sporadic.Returning to Manhattan, Grant found work in TV (e.g., the daytime soap "Search for Tomorrow") and on stage (i.e., "A Hole in the Head" 1957; "Two for the Seesaw" 1959). After earning an OBIE Award for her work in Genet's "The Maids" in 1963, her small screen career began to pick up. In 1965, Grant joined the cast of the primetime soap "Peyton Place" as Stella Chernak and picked up an Emmy for her work. She earned a second statuette for her performance as a runaway wife and mother who ends up at a truck stop in California in "The Neon Ceiling" (NBC, 1971).By the time she had earned her second Emmy, Grant's feature career had been rejuvenated with her stellar work as the widow of a murder victim in Norman Jewison's Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night" (1967). That same year, she essayed a neurotic in the campy "Valley of the Dolls." In "The Landlord" (1970), she was the society matron mother of Beau Bridges and her comic portrayal earned her a second Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress. Grant then played the mother of all Jewish mothers, Sophie Portnoy, in Ernest Lehman's film version of Philip Roth's novel "Portnoy's Complaint" (1972). Hal Ashby's "Shampoo" (1975) finally brought her a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award as a Beverly Hills matron having an affair with her hairdresser. The following year, Grant received a fourth nomination for her deeply moving portrayal of a Jewish refugee in "Voyage of the Damned."Her subsequent screen roles have been of varying quality, although Grant always brings a professionalism and degree of excellence to even the smallest role. After striking out as a sitcom lead in the underrated "Fay" (NBC, 1975), she delivered a fine portrayal of First Lady Grace Coolidge in "Backstairs at the White House" (NBC, 1979), was the domineering mother of actress Frances Farmer in "Will There Really Be a Morning?" (CBS, 1983) and excelled as Dora Cohn, mother of "Roy Cohn" (HBO, 1992). On the big screen, Grant lent her substantial abilities to "Teachers" (1984) as a hard-nosed school superintendent, "Defending Your Life" (1991), as an elegant prosecutor sparring with adversary Rip Torn, and "It's My Party" (1996), as the mother of man suffering from complications from AIDS.While Grant has continued to act in features and on TV, she has concentrated more on her directing career since the 80s. After studying at the American Film Institute, she made the short "The Stronger" (1976) which eventually aired on Arts & Entertainment's "Shortstories" in 1988. Grant made her feature debut with "Tell Me a Riddle" (1980), an earnest, well-acted story of an elderly couple facing death. She has excelled in the documentary format, beginning with "The Wilmar 8" (1981), about strike by female bank employees in the Midwest. (Grant later directed a fictionalized account entitled "A Matter of Sex" for NBC in 1984). She...

It helps bring a new level of understanding to the rise in 'cancel culture' and cultural movements such as Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and even Anti-Vaxers!
