Fischer’s paid leave plan aims to encourage companies to offer two weeks of paid leave to employees in exchange for a tax credit of 25 percent an employee’s leave-time earnings. It’s the leading conservative proposal for national paid leave, and the most popular according to a Pew survey earlier this year that found 87 percent somewhat or strongly favor “providing tax credits to any employer that provides paid leave.”
According to a new report, black women are leaving the Democratic Party, cracking the base. The 3rd annual Power of the Sister Vote conducted by Essence and The Black Women’s Roundtable found an 11-percent drop in black female voters (from 85 to 74 percent over one year), who believe the Democratic party best represents their interests. Additionally, more than one in five black women don’t think either party best represents them — an eight-point increase from last year. This is not the first signal of trouble from a constituency that has been the party’s most loyal voters.
Why should Americans suffer when Congress doesn't? Congress is essentially unaffected by the high costs of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges because of a special exemption.
Ivanka Trump got it exactly right when she called for giving parents more tax relief. For too long, Washington has been focused on creating new government programs to take over parenting tasks or provide specific services to select groups of parents. But that approach fails to recognize that families have very different needs. An increase in the child tax credit will help all parents by letting them keep more of their earnings to spend as they know is best for their families. This should be a policy idea that has broad, bipartisan support.
