Sambath Meas was born in Pailin, Cambodia at a time of civil war. Having survived the effects of the Vietnam War, the Khmer Civil War, and the Maoist-inspired Khmer Rouge regime, her parents decided not to stick around for another phase of mass killings. Her family, like thousands of other Khmers, fled to the Cambodian-Thai border in 1979. After being displaced in various refugee camps for two years, Chicago became their new home in 1981. Meas graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a B.A. in political science and has taken writing classes at Northwestern University. She works in the legal industry for 20 years now. In her spare time, she helps novice writers to get started with their stories. Her current projects include self-help, science fiction, graphic novel, and young adult fantasy books. She writes fiction, focusing on murder mystery, fantasy, and science fiction; and nonfiction, focusing on memoir, biography, and self-improvement. Sambath shares her story about her family's experience from the Khmer Rouge era and what her parents went through.  She also shares what she has done to help her father's PTD from the Khmer Rouge, have a better relationship with parents and live a much happier life. Kanya Sesser is a model, skater and surfer.  Kanya was born in Pak Chong, Thailand without legs. She was abandoned on the front steps of a Buddhist temple when she was only one week old. The monks at the temple took care of her for one year until she was transferred to a Bangkok hospital.  For a few years she lived with an older loving couple that she loved to call her grandparents. It was at the age of 5 that she was finally united with her devoted adoptive parents and destiny brought her to Portland, Oregon. Pushed by her inexhaustible energy and her invincible attitude not to let anything stop her she started at a very young age with skateboarding, surfing, mono skiing, tennis, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair racing, hiking, swimming, break dancing, quad driving and a lot more. After competing in 100, 200 and 400 meter wheelchair racing events at school and at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ she has intensified training to qualify for Team USA for the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in mono skiing.  Listen to Kanya’s episode as she shares her story. Yi Liu is a US-based Chinese(Mandarin)-English bilingual actress, trained in NYC and has credits in theater, films, documentaries, and contemporary art. The short film Joy Joy Nails, starring Yi Liu,  premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in April of 2017.  She also starred in“Li-Yan, 2016”, directed by world-renowned French artist Philippe Parreno, which was exhibited in Gladstone Gallery in New York, 2016. She also starred in the short film “The Daydreaming Bunny”, which received millions of viewers after it was released, and had a principle role the short film “The Walker” which won Best Short in 2016 Alicante Film Festival. Yi used to follow the crowd and wanted to be liked by everyone.  When started learning to say no to things that don't serve her, that is when she started to stand up for herself and showcased her authentic self versus the Asian woman stereotype. Jackie Fernandez is a two time Emmy award winning  TV host and content creator.  She is also an Asian American advocate.  She has been in the TV industry for more than a decade and that means she lived in a lot of places.  Anchoring the morning shows in Greensboro, NC and Cleveland, Oh gave Jackie the chance to cover some of the biggest stories those cities had ever seen from Donald Trump’s RNC to the Cavaliers NBA Championship to Maya Angelou’s death. Unbelievable stories she felt privileged to tell.  Along the way, Alice won two Emmys for her work in both hard news coverage and community service. Winning one Emmy is pretty unreal so when she got another one, she gave it to her mom and dad. The even had a little awards ceremony and everything!
