053 - How Bridge Bike Works built a carbon bike factory | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:08

In this episode, I'm chatting with the founders of Bridge Bike Works, an ambitious carbon fiber bike brand starting up in Toronto, Canada. And when I say ambitious, I mean, they're literally starting EVERYTHING from scratch, there's not a single off the shelf aspect of their entire process, and they're making it all right there at their new factory. So, what does it take to launch a new bicycle manufacturing plant to also launch your own brand of bike? You're about to find out, along with an explanation of their racy yet capable all road geometry concept, which takes full advantage of bigger tires without sacrificing a whip fast ride.   BROUGHT TO YOU BY:This episode is brought to you by 10 Barrel Brewing, which much to my delight, keeps a range of sours on tap year round.   WANT MORE?Find the Bikerumor Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean, and through RSS, or wherever you listen to podcasts!  052 - Why Bentonville is better than your city (for bikes) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:42

As it happened, I made a last minute trip to Bentonville for the launch of Fezzari's new Signal Peak XC mountain bike. Which happened to coincide with Outerbike and the Big Sugar gravel race. And since I don't like having any downtime whatsoever, I squeezed in an interview with Gary Vernon, who I'll sum up as the orchestrator of all things bike advocacy and infrastructure in Bentonville, Arkansas.   If you haven't been to Bentonville to ride, all I can say is this: When you finally do go, and I do mean WHEN, not IF, your mind will absolutely be blown. Talking about bike lanes and access and trails is one thing. But seeing how they've made it an integral part of their entire community and city planning is honestly beyond words. But that doesn't mean we can't try, so if you're at all involved in your city's planning, or your local bike advocacy group, or you just want to hear what's possible and get inspired to make cycling better in your own community, this episode will absolutely open your eyes to what's possible.  051 - How Reddiyo perfects cycling training with A.I. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:45

What's up Bikerumor fans! Today, I'm speaking with the founders of Reddiyo, a smart training app that uses your workout data and performance to algorithmically determine your next workout. It's an interesting concept not just because it uses data from the workouts you do on the app, but also your past recorded workouts to get you up and running with an effective program from day one. In this episode, we talk about how they started, some of the technical challenges and opportunities in creating the app, plus a bit about the actual business of creating a subscription based app. We wrap up with a look at features to come and some pie in the sky thinking on future features. I love hearing the startup stories of bike brands because almost every one of them is a pure passion play. They're started by riders who wanted to do something on their own and saw a gap in the market, then took the leap to create something cool. Reddiyo's founders not only took a leap of faith, but they went into a category that has some steep competition. But, after using it, I'd say they've managed to create something both interesting and useful, particularly if your focus is more on getting stronger and faster than on just entertaining yourself on the trainer. If you'd like to try it yourself, you can use promo code BIKERUMOR30 to more than double your free trial period from 14 days to a full 30 days! Here's to a training smarter not harder. BROUGHT TO YOU BY... And if you're looking for a refreshing bevy after a hard training session, check out 10 barrel brewing's awesome assortment of sours. They're perfect on a hot day, or apres ride summer drink with friends. They're only available on the west coast of the US for now, but absolutely worth checking out if you can find it. WANT MORE?  050 - Lauf Cycles‘ switch to consumer direct & future products | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:51

In the 2 years since we've last partied with the Lauf Cycles team, they've switched from IBD to consumer direct, changed up most of their team, and are trying to find a good U.S. headquarters. They've also been working hard on that full suspension gravel bike that's set to change the landscape, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to launch it. We asked why, and talked a lot about the rest of the cycling industry, their growth, and future plans. This one's a very casual conversation, but it's littered with interesting little facts about the bike industry as a whole that are definitely worth waiting for. This episode is brought to you by 10 Barrel Brewing - If you like beer, and you're on the West Coast, check them out. Not only do they have some great beer, they also put on some rad events at their breweries in Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho! WANT MORE?  049 - Giro tells how they mix style with safety | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:13

It's one thing to make a helmet look good. Or to make it aerodynamic. And quite another to make it do both. But when it needs to do all of those things and meet the required safety standards, that's where things get tricky. Fortunately, Giro has a lot of experience, and the man in charge of tying all those pieces together is Rob Wesson. In this episode, we learn how they go from concept sketch to a finished product that not only looks good, but keeps our heads safe... This is Part 3 of our 3-part series on bicycle helmet designs and features. Check out Part 1, where Kali's founder explains why helmet testing standards are all wrong, and why your helmet really should be a lot softer. And in Part 2, Lazer explains why different head shapes, hairstyles, and even types of riders benefit from different fits and retention mechanisms. WANT MORE?  048 - Lazer Helmets has a fit over retention mechs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:23

We know, helmet retention systems...yawn. Except, there are so many ways to make them, and so many ways to make them work.  And then there's fit...even helmets from the same brand can have drastically different fits across models. But why? In this episode, Lazer's longtime US "helmeteer" Chris Smith explains why they use various systems, the pros and cons, and opines on how to get a helmet that fits correctly across head shapes, hairstyles, and more. This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on bicycle helmet designs and features. Stay tuned for our interview with Giro on design to aerodynamics, and check out Part 1, where Kali's founder explains why helmet testing standards are all wrong, and why your helmet really should be a lot softer.  047 Kali Helmets explains why helmets are too hard | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:06

If you think bicycle helmets are designed to be as safe as possible, think again. The problem isn't the brands...none of the good ones are cutting corners or making false claims. The problem is the testing...it's unrealistic. So helmets have to be harder than necessary to pass those tests and get certified to sell. Which is bad news for your brain. In this episode, Kali Protectives founder Brad Waldron explains how things can be better, and shares how they design around these limitations as best they can to produce softer, safer helmets that can still past CPSC and EN testing. This is Part 1 of 3 on bicycle helmet designs and features, stay tuned for interviews with Lazer and Giro on everything from fit to retention mechanisms to design to aerodynamics and more.  041 - How Swytch Bikes hacked their e-bike conversion kit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:00

Swytch Bike founder Oliver Montague has a few stories to tell, both interesting and quite entertaining…especially when we get to his factory visits. The Swytch e-bike conversion kit allows you to turn almost any bike into an electric assist e-bike, using a front wheel hub motor and lightweight battery pack that clicks onto a proprietary mount that couldn't be easier to use. This interview isn't so much about the tech and the product, although we do cover that. It's more about how Oliver started the company by using Chinese e-bike kits and random parts to help others convert their bikes and, after hacking together hundreds of different combinations, figuring out a better solution and then launching a company to make it real. Whether you like e-bikes or not, this one's a really fun conversation about how things work behind the scenes.  040 - Why is Harley Davidson launching e-bikes? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:02

When none other than Harley Davidson launches an e-bike brand, we have to wonder how they're going to complete? What's makes Serial 1 unique, and how will they translate the Hog culture into pedal-assist bicycles? Yes, they raised a few eyebrows when they announced they were launching a electric bike brand, but one look at the designs shows they've done their homework. In this episode we'll talk about how Serial 1 president Jason Huntsman's aerospace experience working on the space shuttle, and his e-mobility efforts at Ford, led him to Harley Davidson, and now, leading their e-bike efforts at Serial 1.
