Here there be Monsters Part 2: The People of Peace | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1805

Balquhidder has always been seen as a “Thin Place” as the Celts say, were the boundary between Heaven and Earth is naturally not as robust as the rest of the world. All of this Rev. Kirk likely knew when he wrote his second book, for which he would be better remembered Today. The Secret Commonwealth, which weaved together strange tales of a race of people who once dwelt beside mankind. A magical and noble people, who lived in the hills and trees of the wood, and under the mounds of the earth, who demanded respect, and offered good luck to those who gave it, and suffering to those who did not. They were the Fiery Folk. And in 1692, in the same year that Robert Kirk published his book, the little people carried him away to their land somewhere into the twilight of reality, never to be seen again. Fixed the media issues and republished. Like many of our subjects, obscured by media, Hollywood, and modern fantasy, fables of the dragon languish behind fictional depictions of physical manifestations of fire breathing winged serpents, most are content to regurgitate Tolkien like fairytales. The Dragon of folklore is a far richer and vibrant creature. For instance, two troupes normally follow the dragon where ever he is found around the world is that he is prone to be found around water rather than to breath fire and if slain, their body melts away leaving a putrid stench. The Chinese dragon which was often praised for ending droughts by chasing clouds into the much-needed areas and has also been known to fall dead from the sky at times, and the villagers in reverence would cover its body with straw mats. It would disappear shortly after. In the aforementioned tale of Tiamat, she was the embodiment of the salt-waters, the originator of all life.  Episode 4 Supplemental: Chasing Tales | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1676

Our venerable for bearer Rev. Montague Summers eagerly devoured the subject of the European Werewolf in a single manuscript, and much of what we now recount and know of the subject is from his delicate mind. He studiously pointed out that the origin of the shapeshifter is nothing new, it existed from the dawn of creation, and as we will see, existed even to this day. He saw the creature as he saw the world, a direct dichotomy of good and evil, black and white. The Shapeshifter was one who denied his humanity, who used unsound and unholy devices to achieve his evil ends. He scorned God and his creation. He distained his fellow man and desired his ultimate destruction. He was a blasphemer, a heretic, a reviler. Many were his devise to change, the most common being a pelt of a wolf, made into a coat or belt to be fastened around him. Sometimes it was a special cream that was rubbed all over the body that allowed the transformation to take place. Often times it was the Devil himself who provided these malicious artifacts, a trade of sorts with the Lord of lies. For you soul you could “live deliciously” and have power the likes of which you could not imagine.  The Legend | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1213

Steve Cook of WTCM-FM in Traverse City recorded a song for April fool’s day in 1987 called The Legend. The song recounts a strange myth whispered by his friends and family. The joke was on him when he became inundated with stories from listeners who claimed to have seen a strange dog or wolf like creature which stood on its hind legs. The song took on new life however when Grand Rapids Press ran an article about an unknown animal near Luther which ripped apart screens and mangled door frames trying to enter the small cabin in the middle of the woods. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources investigation ruled out a bear and said it was some kind of unknown Canine. Those versed in the Occult might see a link to Sabine Barin-Gould’s recounting of the Baltic legends of werewolves that would try force their way into homes at night. If they succeeded, they would kill everyone inside.  Episode 3 Supplemental: The Widow Paris | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 990

The dark arts used by sorcerers through the ages was often an amalgamation of ancient wisdom mixed with the dominate religion of the time. Abramelin said in his own book that his magic could be practiced by anyone who believed in God, be he Christian, Muslim, or Jew. A city on the bayou stands today, as it did one hundred and fifty years ago, as a microcosm of race, religion, and politics of America. New Orleans stood at the beginning of the 19th Century as a place were strange things were told on every corner. African and European, slave with free, Catholicism with witchcraft, blended into the most eclectic communities the world has ever known. In this community, a mixing of religions also took place, spiritual folkways of the African diaspora blended and was practiced alongside traditional Christianity, Voodoo wasn’t born in New Orleans, but it certainly was defined and took root there. And among its practitioners, Queens were often looked up to as leaders of a sort. People would come to them for advice or help, weather it was a jealous lover or success of their business, to purchase gris-gris, or to attend a ritual. And among all the Queens, one name stands above the rest, Marie Laveau.  Episode 2 Supplemental: A Creature of the World | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 817

If you ever find yourself vacationing on the majestic Islands of the Cyclades archipelago, perhaps overlooking the beautiful beaches of Santorini, or maybe on the ancient cobblestone steps of Mykonos and you hear an unexpected knock at your door after dark, it might be wise, as the locals would tell you, to wait for a second knock, least you become a victim of the isles ancient and most wicked inhabitant, the Vorvolika. Seeming to be the most impatient of monsters, if the first call is not answered, it will move on to your neighbors. If it happens that you do answer its beckoning cry, you will find the doorway devoid of any presence. You have however, opened the door to your own doom, and will suffer some strange fate not long after. Such is the curse of the Greek Vampire. https://devilrypodcast.com/ Music by Kevin Macleod https://soundcloud.com/kevin-9-1 "Shadowlands 1 - Horizon", "Shadowlands 2 - Bridge", "Shadowlands 3 - Machine", "Shadowlands 4 - Breath", "Shadowlands 5 - Antechamber", "Shadowlands 6 - The Pit", "Shadowlands 7 - Codex" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

The Terror by Night | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1305

In October of 2018 The Washington Post ran an article titled “Archaeologists find ‘vampire burial’ site of a child feared capable of rising from the dead” the Articled went on to detail a strange burial ritual they have come to be familiar with in the field. More than fifteen hundred years ago, in a vast Roman villa a young child was buried with a stone the size of an egg in their mouth. Researchers speculate the child likely died from a Malaria outbreak at the time. The reason, it turned out, was a custom among Europeans at the time, to stop the child from rising from the dead to spread the disease to others. Another child, a three-year-old girl was found not far from there with stones weighing down all limbs. Locals dubbed the find “the Vampire of Lugnano” and a quote from an archaeologist working the site stated, “beyond these bizarre discoveries were human beings who lived in fear” The question is, fear from what? Many, familiar only with the sparkling erotica of the Hollywood Vampire craze might be perplexed to hear of a Vampire being dispatched with stones. In fact, the Vampire of folklore could be destroyed many ways. A popular method was to drive an iron stake through the suspects head. Our ancestors viewed things with a spiritual or otherworldly sense, much like the vampires themselves. Some materials possessed properties that were purer than others, metal being at the top of the list, in fact the more pure or rare the metal, the better it seemed to work against the undead. This is where the idea of a silver bullet should be used to kill a Werewolf comes from.  Episode 1 Supplemental: The Wizard of Europe | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 821

In last weeks episode Tell me Strange Things, we looked at the curious life and works of Montague Summers and explored his odd views on the literal existence of Vampires, Werewolves and Witches. His exploration and translations of works of Inquisitors and Witchfinder generals did not endear him to the prevailing sentiment at the time and now-being that the trial, torture, and execution of witches was a sad and disturbing byproduct of overzealous and misguided Religious charlatans. Although many of the examples produced in the hysteria of the day, like that of the reviled Matthew Hopkins and the Salem Witch trials read like psychopathic horror novels, what is often overlooked is the real cases of witchcraft and devil worship practiced by the supposed enlightened nobles and aristocrats of the Middle ages and Renaissance era.  Tell me Strange Things | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1107

In 1926 a strange looking man, with a black cape, black shovel hat, wearing a black cassock with a white collar came bounding out of the reading room of the British Museum of Oxford, cape fluttering behind him. In one hand was a silver doped cane, in another, a black portfolio with the words "VAMPIRE" written in blood red across it. "Monty" a man called after him. The man in black turned, a mischievous grin came across his face. "Yes sir? Tell me strange things..." https://devilrypodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/devilrypod Photo by Jordan Connor https://unsplash.com/@jordonsconner Ian Espinosa https://unsplash.com/@greystorm "Shadowlands 1 - Horizon", "Shadowlands 2 - Bridge", "Shadowlands 3 - Machine", "Shadowlands 4 - Breath", "Shadowlands 5 - Antechamber", "Shadowlands 6 - The Pit", "Shadowlands 7 - Codex" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
