About Dan Marshall: Born in New Jersey in 1971, reared in Ohio and finishing his education in Connecticut at the Propersi Institute of Art, Marshall is used to adapting to different environs. As a successful tattoo artist, he has been fortunate to extend his travel experiences all over the world.

This week Publisher Eric Rhoads interviews landscape painter Dave Santillanes for the PleinAir Art Podcast. Santillanes is based in Fort Collins, Colorado. His work has won awards in the Plein Air Division at the Oil Painters of America National Show wet paint competition, as well as the PleinAir Salon. “Capturing the essence of a landscape involves a realistic rendering of color, light and atmosphere,” Santillanes says.

About the artist: Liz Haywood-Sullivan, PSA-MP, IAPS/MC, is a representational landscape artist painting in the pastel medium. Her award-winning paintings are defined by strong contrasts and color, dramatic lighting, and graphic compositions, which often feature the interplay between man and the environment.

Publisher Eric Rhoads interviews Marc Dalessio in this week’s PleinAir Art Podcast. Dalessio is an American artist who went to Italy in 1992 on a one-year trip, and says he stayed there because he found what he was looking for. He began studying at the Florence Academy, where he learned the techniques that he had a difficult time finding teachers of in the US (he notes that this was before the wonders of today’s internet). Dalessio now paints and teaches full time near Florence.

Eric Rhoads interviews figurative and still life artist Sherrie McGraw, who is known for her classical chiaroscuro* paintings. In this PleinAir Art Podcast, they discuss color and light, the colorist movement, the language of drawing, and more. “Art wasn’t anything anybody really did,” McGraw says when telling us about growing up and discovering art. She says she became captivated by the art books her mother had at home, and the rest is history.

Portrait and landscape artist David Leffel, who recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award, discusses his life story, from major surgeries during his adolescence, to his path as a professional artist. Bonus: This PleinAir Art Podcast includes a live audience Q&A. Leffel says that due to joint disease, he essentially grew up in hospitals until he was about 14 years old. He needed many major surgeries through those years, which was also during World War II.
