Allez Les Rouges with Karen Gill, Bill Shankly's granddaughter: Klopp's dream fulfilled and a Champions League draw to savour | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:46:17

Peter Hooton has a very special guest on the latest episode of the superb Allez Les Rouges podcast - Karen Gill, granddaughter of the late, great Bill Shankly, the man who laid the foundations for the modern Liverpool. They are joined by regulars, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson, for what is a great listen for all Reds. The podcast kicks off by discussing the victory over Arsenal that took Jurgen Klopp's side clear at the top and, more importantly, even at this early stage of the campaign, kept them two points clear of Manchester City. As Peter says, it seems like this season is a continuation of lost, where neither of the top two teams in the country can afford to slip up. But the panel were not just impressed by what happened on the pitch, but off it, too, and in particular the passion, patience and loudness of the Anfield crowd, which placed in the context of when Klopp first arrived at the club, underlines just how he has turned the fanbase from 'doubters into believers'. That much is clear when talk turns to the draw for the Champions League with John insisting it would actually be better for the Reds to take on the likes of Real Madrid in the group stages. There's also a preview of Saturday's Premier League trip to Burnley, and how Sean Dyche's tactics will hold no fear for Virgil van Dijk and Co, before the last part of the show is dedicated to a forthcoming trip to Bill Shankly's home village of Glenbuck in Scotland, Karen's memory of her granddad, and what he would have made of Klopp. Enjoy.  Academy Show: Lowdown on the 17-year-old training with Jurgen Klopp's first-team - and previewing a Manchester double-header | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:24:42

The first Academy Show of the new season is here with host Paul Wheelock being joined by journalist, broadcaster and big Liverpool FC fan Matt Addison, who is a regular at Kirby watching the club's U18 and U23 teams. Before they get stuck into what is a big weekend for the talented young sides, Matt gives us the lowdown on the 17-year-old midfielder who has been pictured training with Jurgen Klopp's this week, Leighton Clarkson. Also on the agenda is Fiorentina's bid for Bobby Duncan, but please note the podcast was recorded before the 18-year-old striker's agent made an astonishing attack on the club and Michael Edwards (read the story HERE). The big incentive for players in the Reds academy is that Klopp is willing to give them a chance - Trent Alexander-Arnold being the ultimate example. However, with academy director Alex Inglethorpe admitting the club's youngsters will have to 'take a world-class player's shirt off him' to get into the senior side, Matt and Paul wonder whether more players may need to take the 'Harry Wilson route'. Talk then turns to the appointment of Curtis Jones as the new captain of the U23s, Harvey Elliott and Rhian Brewster, and the team's start to the season, plus a preview of their visit of Manchester City to Anfield on Saturday (August 31, 6pm KO). And there's also time to look at the free-scoring (as ever) U18s, who kick off a big double-header by welcoming Manchester United to the academy earlier in the day (11am KO). Enjoy.  Adam Bogdan on life under Rodgers and Klopp, the likely and unlikely training ground stars, and the future for Liverpool | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:40:36

They say you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper. Well, Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation will have certainly been driving Jurgen Klopp mad so far this season. From injuries and howlers to shock transfers and penalty shootout heroics, it’s been a stark cry from last season’s stability between the sticks. With Alisson currently sidelined, Simon Mignolet enjoying pastures new, and Adrian adjusting to new surroundings, Theo Squires caught up with former Reds shot-stopper Adam Bogdan. The Hungarian is currently a free agent following his release from Liverpool earlier this summer, and while he’s keeping fit waiting for the right offer back in Budapest, he’s been an interested observer from afar following his former club during the opening weeks of the season. Opening up on his time at Anfield, Bogdan spills the beans on his move to the Reds, Brendan Rodgers’ sacking, and Jurgen Klopp’s arrival and how the German took the club from mid-table obscurity to European champions. The 31-year-old gives his view on Loris Karius' 2018 Champions League final performance, calling upon his own experiences of making mistakes when the whole Liverpool fanbase is watching, and just how hard it is as a goalkeeper when you suffer a concussion. He also shares what it was like at Melwood, revealing the likely and unlikely names who always shone in training. And finally, Bogdan reveals all about the Reds’ surprise summer signing, Andy Lonergan, having competed with the veteran for the goalkeeping jersey at Bolton Wanderers earlier in his career. It’s a fascinating listen. Enjoy! For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

Talk then turns to two defenders who endured contrasting evenings at Anfield - David Luiz and Joel Matip. Regarding the Liverpool centre-back, the panel wonder whether Matip is now firmly established as Virgil van Dijk's defensive partner and just when his new deal will be agreed. Joe then struggles to find new words to describe Mohamed Salah but Dan does as he pays a huge compliment to Roberto Firmino. Both Liverpool and Arsenal will go into tonight's big match at Anfield boasting perfect starts to the new Premier League season. But it will be Liverpool who will be favourites to make it nine points from nine points – not least because of their recent record in games between the sides. The Reds have scored 23 goals in their last seven unbeaten matches against the Gunners – a remarkable run of form which culminated in the stunning 5-1 victory at Anfield in the final game of 2018. So will Arsenal be lambs to the slaughter once more? Or will they be a different beast after an impressive and unexpected summer spending spree which was headlined by the signing of Nicolas Pepe, who was linked with a move to Liverpool before his £72m arrival at the Emirates. To answer those questions, and many more, including the feeling in the Gunners fan base about their American owners, Paul Wheelock speaks to Tom Marshall-Bailey, who as well as being a big Gooner, can often be seen in the Echo office in his role as the publishing editor for Reach PLC Regionals. Top of the league, European Super Cup champions... but not everything is perfect at Liverpool right now. Kristian Walsh and Josh Williams delve deep into the debate over the Reds' new defensive structure and figure out three things: what is it, why has Jurgen Klopp implemented it, and if this is the right thing to do. The good and not so good of Chelsea and Southampton are touched upon, mainly related to that new-fangled high line, while there is also recognition of Roberto Firmino offering the 'glue' to everything his side does well in attack; Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also recipients of high praise. There is also a focus on Arsenal, their new front three and whether imitation will be the sincerest form of flattery - or if it is the set-up which could make Liverpool vulnerable on Saturday.  The Agenda: Jurgen Klopp's retirement plan hint and the parallels with Pep Guardiola | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:10:50

It doesn't bear thinking about - life after Jurgen Klopp. But the man who has masterminded Liverpool's return to the summit of European football has cast doubt over whether he will remain at Anfield beyond his current contract, which expires in 2022. The club would like Klopp to stay longer than that but so far - publicly at least - the 52-year-old has been reluctant to commit his future beyond three summers' time. And the Champions League-winning boss this week even admitted, when accepting the coach of the year award from Sport Bild in his native Germany, that he could retire in 'two or three years time'. So little wonder, then, the latest episode of The Agenda is all about the Reds manager. Joe Rimmer and Theo Squires wonder whether Klopp's seven-year itch will continue or whether he can be convinced to build a Alex Ferguson-style dynasty with the Reds. Our boys also discuss the parallels between Klopp's own future and that of his greatest rival, just where he could go next, and just who could replace the great man if he does leave.
