Full press release Lots of new content posted to the website scalemodelpodcast.com *************************************** MAILBAG Jay asks Hi Stuart. I am behind on my listening and just learned that Anthony is cutting back his time. Could you pass a question along to him, please? “Which of the Macross plane model kits are the best as far as detail and quality??” Thank you for your dedication to our hobby and the work you put into SMP!! Anthony’s reply Hi Jay, Anthony here. You can not go wrong with a 1/72 or 1/48 VF-1 kit from Hasegawa, for quality or price! There’s also very nice kits from Bandai who maintain very high-quality kits of the more current series! Hope you enjoy it!   Wayne Peters Hi guys, just been listening to Ep 52. Re the new release Italeri 1/9 German Infantryman, I’m pretty sure this is a re-pop of the old Esci kit (#6001) which I have somewhere in my stash! And re the HobbyBoss XM706E2, they also did an M706 (kit # 82148 from 2008) and Verlinden did an XM76E2 way back in 1988 (kit # 369). Frank Ramsay First I want to say I’m going to miss hearing Anthony every episode, I think he’s been a great co-host.  But I completely understand life comes first.   And I’m glad he will still be involved doing the interviews. I was about to type up a big discussion on model railroad scales but decided it wasn’t really that interesting.  So all I’ll say on the subject is that you mentioned at least one of the odder scales (I think it was On30) where the train is a different scale than the track and you wondered why that was.  The reason these exist is because not every actual railroad uses the same distance between rails and if you want an accurate scale model railroad of such a railway then you need these odd scales. You also asked us to write about our thoughts on constant-scale modeling.  For me, I’m “sort of” a constant-scale modeller in that I have a specific scale for each type of subject:  Aircraft (early flight) I do in 1:32, Military Vehicles of all types are 1:35, Maschinen Krieger is 1:20,  Gunpla is Master Grade (aka 1:100).

Host Stuart Clark Thanks to our latest Patreon Supporter: Terry Wilkinson *************************************** LATEST NEWS Don’t forget about our contest Presenting SMP’s Super Model Contest 2020 sponsored by Moscato Hobby Models https://scalemodelpodcast.com/smpcontest2020/ *** The 2020 Scale Modelling Survey https://scalemodelpodcast.com/2020survey Several years ago Jon Bius did a modelling survey in which the modelling community responded in a big way.  This survey provided some interesting insights into the scale modelling community. It’s time for another survey with some expanded questions.  I have reached out to Jon and with his permission, I have used his original questions and thanks to several other contributors including the On The Bench and Plastic Model Mojo podcasts we have added several more which we know will be interesting to members of our hobby. The survey is via Google Forms and is anonymous.  It will be available until the end of August 2020.  The results when compiled will be available to all. Link to 2020 Modelling Survey Please share far and wide as we would like to get as large a cross-section of modeller’s as possible. The Survey closes Sept 30th. *** 2 very nice kits have arrived from Horizon Models 1/72 Convair SM-65D Atlas and Mercury – Redstone. Inbox review coming *************************************** MAILBAG Bob writes in Hi there Stuart. I have encountered your podcast a little while ago and have caught up on your most recent recordings. Very enjoyable and informative.  I’ve been a builder of models for a long time but in different ways. I started about 50 years ago with simple models. I focused on WWII aircraft early on. I also did rockets with Estes and Centuri kits.I then got into racing 10th scale R/C cars. Even became sponsored. We traveled a bit to different races, brought home trophies and some great stories. I also became interested in High Power Rocketry. This can be the big stuff. I’ve included a picture of my most recent build, an Astrobee-D, just under 6 feet tall. I’m licensed for Level 1, so I can purchase engines up to “I”. I’ve flown a “J” motor but didn’t take the test for Level 2. If you are familiar with the small engines A, B, C, etc… Each letter up is double the thrust. So you can see once you get to J, it’s a big motor. Recently I’ve been back into plastic, just finishing the monster C57-D Cruiser from the movie Forbidden Planet. I included some shots of that one. Like you have said, “where are you gonna put this thing?” Well, I made a little shelf and have it up over my head.  Enough about me. Like I mentioned, love your show.  One thing. You seem to mix up the name of the ship with the name of the man. The ship is Yamato but the man is Yamamoto. Only because I’m a huge WWII reader and it makes me wince when you say the ship instead of the man who was shot down by P-38s.  Be well! Tim writes Hi Stuart and Anthony, Thanks for bringing up the dedicated model room issue in your podcast. While not ideal it did get me thinking and I added some shelving next to my kitchen table. Not ideal but better. I was sorry to hear Anthony was stepping back from the podcast but not bo...

Atlantis Hobbies signed a multi-year Licensing Agreement with General Motors. AtlantisPressReleaseGM.pdf *************************************** MAILBAG Tony Jacob writes in about doing things your way. The best way to do anything in modelling is the way that suits you and works for you! I don’t believe in there being only 1 right way to do anything in modelling and too many modellers worry too much about what other people are doing. I always tell beginners to find some GOOD advice, then use that just as a starting point. The best example is the common question ‘what ratio should I thin paint for airbrushing’. The ‘skim milk’ suggestion is great advice as a starting point. But each paint brand, sometimes each colour, may perform better either more or less thinned. And each airbrush, each compressor setting and each modeller will always get their best results at a thinning ratio that specifically suits them. None are right or wrong. Just experiment and find what works best for you. Then anyone who tells you “You’re doing it wrong” can go take a long walk off a short pier. *************************************** LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTS Italeri August Releases: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2020/07/preview-italeris-five-releases-for.html Hobbyboss August Releases: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2020/07/preview-four-polar-opposite-kits-from.html Trumpeter August Releases: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2020/07/trumpeters-four-new-kits-of-august-in.html MiniArt’s new 35th scale Werkstattkraftwagen Typ-03-30: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2020/07/preview-back-to-work-with-miniarts-new.html 1/48 Eduard Tales Of Iwo Jima VLR P-51D’s https://www.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=36190&mode=thread&order=0 Dora Wings announcements – 2 new aircraft https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2788296804734212&id=1929101897320378 Round2 video update for August https://youtu.be/wY92KdiSTEo Black Dog latest releases:

HLJ is a great source, and I love their business, but they are not the prices you should be basing comments on for Chinese/HKG or European kits (Meng, Dragon, Trumpeter, Eduard etc.) These all attract a “protection tax” (or equivalent) in Japan, so are priced highly compared to other sources. For non-Japanese kits, I recommend the pricing from Hobbyeasy in Hong Kong (www.hobbyeasy.com) Their prices will be more reflective of “free market” prices. I have visited them several times in HKG and like HLJ they are an enthusiast run business, with sharp prices and reasonable shipping costs. A pricing example for the Meng WASP Jeep kit. HLJ are CAD$47.37, and Hobbyeasy HK$163 which converts to CAD$27.89, so it’s a huge difference. I’m a pilot with Air NZ, so I get to visit model shops in lots of countries. Whilst Japan and Hong Kong are just streets ahead for the number and quality of shops, I’ve found Vancouver BC to be one of the best non-Asian countries for great model shops. Magic Box hobbies is a treasure and whilst prices are higher than in Asia, the selection is right up there. Cheers for now from a rainy Sydney Australia, and I’ll check you guys out on FB. I notice that sometimes you both talk over each other and sometimes you talk over your guests. This can make the show distracting to listen to sometimes. If you worked on this a touch I’m sure it would kick your podcast up a notch. Thanks very much for your time and have a great week! Ray Davis G’day Stuart and Anthony, I hope that both you and your families are well I just wanted to pass on my compliments to you both on the great interview that you did with  fellow Sydney sider, Brett Green I always look forward to hearing what he has to say about the hobby and any technique tips that he may have. As always, I look forward to what you guys have to talk about on your show. Take care of yourselves and happy modelling to you both. With Respect and Kindest Regards, Your mate, Ray *************************************** LATEST NEWS Miniart presents Pigeons in 1/35 https://miniart-mod...

Thanks to our latest Patreon supporter! Tony Jacob Hosts Stuart Clark Anthony Goodman *************************************** Listener Mail AMS – Advanced Modeller’s Syndrome Tony Jacobs talks about our reluctance to try new things. It used to be that we could try and fail in the privacy and secrecy of our own hobby rooms but with social media the benefits of trying and failing have become something some of us don’t seem willing to do. I looked at a couple of my builds over the last 10-20 years and realized that even just on the subject of weathering, my skills have evolved hugely. I’ve attached some pics numbered in chronological order to illustrate what I mean.  The Tiger was the first time I tried ‘weathering armour’. It’s got a toy-like uniform paint finish, near rusted-through tracks, and weird yellow ‘dust’. Through a succession of trial and error learning with pigments, washes, paint finish variation and lots of other experiments I went from that through Stügs with ‘designer mud’; to Shermans with improving paint, dirt and mud but strangely perfect markings (and figures with that ‘1000 yard stare’… I still hate figures); to Matildas where it’s starting to come together; to my one and only show medal winner… the Uboat. The Matilda or the Uboat would never have happened if I hadn’t first produced the weird Tiger. But not trying new ideas that might result in weird tigers means that people will never improve their skills. My first piece of advice when I’m asked about things like weathering is ‘just try it out’. It’s the start of a never ending process of learning, of ever improving builds, and a whole lot of fu. *************************************** LATEST NEWS Hobbyboss: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2019/12/hobbyboss-christmas-releases-foxhound.html Zvezdas 2020 items from the catalogue: https://www.themodellingnews.com/2019/12/a-look-at-zvezdas-new-items-in-their.html AK announcements December:

Hosts Stuart Clark Anthony Goodman *************************************** Listener Mail Aidan O’Donnell I am writing to let you know how much I enjoyed your interview with Aaron Skinner.  I found it fascinating. I have watched many of his YouTube videos and found the story of his entry into the professional modelling world very interesting indeed. I am also looking forward to Anthony’s upcoming series on Resin kit building.  I have a few resin kits of ships from the Babylon 5 TV show. They have been hibernating in my stash for a few years now and I haven’t worked up the nerve to tackle one.  Hopefully, I will pick up a few tips and summon up the courage to have a go. As you guys christened Julian’s fan group “Julian’s Jewels”  I would like to propose the name “Anthony’s Acolytes” for the followers of the upcoming “In-Depth Report”.  My first thought was “Goodman’s Groupies” but after some reflection, I thought that sounded a trifle seedy. *************************************** LATEST NEWS Revell November. https://www.themodellingnews.com/2019/11/revells-november-releases-from-land-air.html Trumpeter November https://www.themodellingnews.com/2019/11/four-new-kits-with-sprues-colours.html Special Hobby December http://www.specialhobby.info/2019/11/news-from-special-hobby-122019.html Tamiya New releases for November https://www.tamiya.com/english/news/news1912/news0.htm https://www.tamiya.com/english/products/12055/index.htm Eduard 1/48 Mustang Royal Class
