IELTS Listening Practice Online: Time In English Ep 228 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:36

Getting the time and giving the time of day is something we English speakers do all the time. So it’s important that you feel comfortable hearing and asking for the time in English and the good news is you can get this IELTS listening practice online in today’s podcast. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/27/ielts-listening-practice-online This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/english-speaking-practice/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/22/ielts-speaking-test/   Summary: IELTS Listening Practice Online Now it would be great if the English language used a single simple formula for time, no big surprise here, but it does not. There are several ways of saying exactly the same time in English and unfortunately for a new English language learner, you must get familiar with learn them all. So an example of the problem might be, I ask someone on a train time, and someone might respond: “It’s eight, thirty” (it’s a question about now and it’s the morning so we both know this, so we don’t say am which means before midday) “It’s eight, thirty am” (even though we both know it’s the morning, the person specifies am “before midday“ anyway) The person may say “it’s half-past eight” or “Thirty minutes past eight” or “Just gone eight thirty” The basic ingredients are the same, the hour and minutes and if needed the am (ante meridiem) or pm (post meridiem), but the order and style of delivery will differ from person to person. The only way to deal with this inconsistency is to listen to lots of variations and practice.  How To Speak English Fluently And Confidently Ep 226 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:12

Collocations may sound complicated or difficult when you first hear about them when learning to speak English. Collocations are just English speakers all agreeing that a single way of saying something is the best way to say it. All the other ways of saying these groups of words are unnecessary. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/20/how-to-speak-english-fluently-and-confidently This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/speak-english-fluently/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/03/28/speak-english-course/   Summary: How to speak English fluently and confidently Humans like patterns, we feel comfortable when we share patterns with each other. This might be an image we can all look at and understand, or a pattern of music which makes us all feel the same way. So it should be no surprise we do the same with our spoken language. Humans like to be lazy (or efficient!) at conveying feelings and ideas when communicating with words, for native English speakers “less is more”. So now we know what a collocation is, how do we learn them? It’s a pattern, and that means a strong learning technique is repetition. So listening to a native English speakers say these collocations will help train your brain, to store the common word combinations, until you recognise them automatically. Because native English speakers use collocations all the time, they  just sound “right”. If you change the word combinations, you will just sound “wrong” when you speak English.  So you definitely want to practice listening and remembering the more common combinations!   If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts.  A Helping Hand With ESL English Grammar Ep 225 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:06

Today we help simplify some English grammar that ESL (English as a second language) learners find difficult. All you have to do is listen, nice and easy. Or you could deep dive into English grammar. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/16/esl-english-grammar/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/english-grammar-practice/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/15/english-grammar-test/   Summary: ESL English Grammar You could learn all there is to know about English grammar from a book or course that covers; pronouns, determines and quantifiers, possessives, adjectives, adverbials, nouns, verbs, clause, phrase and sentence (that's most of English grammar you would be told you needed before you can speak!). I think most people who want to learn to speak English, just want to speak it. You need to know just enough English grammar so we English speakers can understand your words when you speak in English. It is your choice. You can go easy on yourself or you can make your life harder than it needs to be. I know which way I would go. Remember, knowing all the technical details of why English speakers speak in a certain way is not that important. Listening to a native English speaker will train your brain to copy how English speakers speak. We all know this works because this is what you did as a child to learn to speak your first language.  Six Of The Best English Cooking Idioms Ep 224 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:11

If you search for English language idiom articles on the Internet, you will find a lot of them titled; “100 idioms…” or “1,000 idioms…” or a million English idioms. They are useless, they are just a list of idioms with a basic description, they give you no value. You need not know 1,000 cooking idioms you need to know the 5-6 most commonly used today, right now in everyday English conversation. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/13/cooking-idioms/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/idioms-with-sentences/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/03/04/funny-idioms/   Summary: Cooking Idioms Native British speakers often use idioms and old proverbs to make their conversation a little more interesting (or if you are learning English as a second language… a little harder!) The problem is which idioms are worth learning? With so many English idioms and proverbs you would kill yourself trying to learn them all. If a native English speaker will only use 10-20% of the most common idioms in everyday English conversation. The other 80-90% of idioms are nice to know, but not that popular, so pointless you learning them. You need some help. So this lesson is about saving you some time! We have identified which cooking idioms are worth learning and we explain each one of our chosen idioms in this lesson. Why did we pick these idioms? Well, we’ve heard all of them recently being used by native English speakers, either in conversation or on TV. The point is a native English speaker is likely to use these idioms. Even if you don't use them yourself, at least you will understand (roughly) what they are about and that will help you in speaking English fluently. We have a whole idioms category here, which covers many more of the more common English language idioms.  How To Improve Your Spoken English Ep 223 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:39

If you're here reading this, then you are probably learning to speak English. The problem most new English language learners suffer is not how to read English it’s how to speak it. So let’s cut right to the main question. How do you improve your spoken English? The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/09/improve-spoken-english/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/learn-english-by-listening/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/29/short-stories-in-english-for-students/   Summary: Improve Spoken English At Adept English we see this all the time, learning to read and write in English is a pain, but it's just a matter of time and effort. Most people who learn English as a second language just start at the reading, spelling and grammar part of English and make good progress. This part of the language learning process is simple you just have to remember the patterns of letters and words and humans are amazing with visual patterns so it happens reasonably quickly. Then you open your mouth and expect to speak an English word and its just plain hard. It’s so hard that most people learning to speak English struggle and spend a lot more time learning pronunciation and spoken English than they want to. Why is English so hard to speak? It’s because most of the worlds spoken languages are sound based. The sound made is important to the meaning of what’s being said. In English sound is not that important is where you place stress in your pronunciation of a word. This is a summary so I can’t explain it all here, just know that listening to native English speakers will improve your spoken English. Listening will program your brain to remember where English speakers place the stress in a word. Getting this stress correct in the context of a sentence will mean you are understood by most native English speakers.  British Accent Words VS American Accent Words Ep 221 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9:03

The British don’t speak the same as Americans even though we share the same language, English. Today we cover some pronunciation differences a native British or American English speaker will spot a mile away! The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/02/british-accent-words/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/pronounce-english-words/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/25/how-to-improve-pronunciation-in-english-2/   Summary: British Accent Words Now I know this is a little “off topic” but I will point it out, anyway. The title of this podcast and article is “British Accent Words VS American Accent Words” notice the VS in the middle, this is an abbreviation of versus, and we don’t mean verses in the Bible (verses/versus is a homophone so you need some context to understand which one we are using when you hear is spoken out loud). Versus or VS in our context means compare one thing against another. But the point (I’m getting there...) is you should use VS. (with a period mark) to denote an abbreviation, and even more confusing, if you're a lawyer you might just use v. (v with a period mark) as your abbreviation. It just shows how much rubbish collects in my head, and just how much there is to learn about the English language.     If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts.  Short Stories In English For Students Ep 220 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:40

It’s a simple fact, we humans communicate through stories. It has been this way for a long time, since humans established the first spoken languages. We are all much more interested in information, if the format of the information is a story format. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/29/short-stories-in-english-for-students This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/learn-english-by-listening/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/03/18/english-conversation-practice-3/   Summary: Short Stories In English For Students Humans are hard wired to remember stories as they are one of the most reliable and efficient ways for humans to convey information across time (parents hand stories down to their children and their children etc..) and its efficient at passing information from one person too many (to all those who are within hearing distance). From being told gossip at the coffee machine in work, friends out for a meal talking about what's happened since they last met right down to children learning about life in the real world through bedtime stories. If you hear a story, you will be much more likely to let the information being told into your brain.  The Science Of How To Improve Pronunciation In English Ep 219 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9:24

Today we explain some science behind “listen & learn” the best method of learning to speak English fluently. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/25/how-to-improve-pronunciation-in-english-2 This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/pronounce-english-words/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/08/english-pronunciation-in-the-bathroom/ Summary: How To Improve Pronunciation In English The only reason we learn anything as a species is so we can “adapt to bad things” and “repeat the good things” that happen to us. So regardless of the environment, new or old, we humans can survive and pass this information on to our children. We have no problem remembering that there is a vicious animal living in the woods near where we walk. We might not remember much of the detail about that animal.  The way the human brain works is to remember the important facts (life saving information) and forget the less important details. The problem is humans are less concerned about avoiding dangerous animals and more interested in learning new languages or a dance routine. So forcing our brain to pay attention and remember things we need to use some science, the science of forgetting.   If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts.
