 Katie Beers: Buried Memories 2015 01 16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7208

Katie Beers disappeared on December 28, 1992, two days before her tenth birthday. She was lured by the promise of birthday presents to the home of a family friend, John Esposito. She left a message on her godmother's answering machine saying, "I've been kidnapped by a man with a knife." Esposito, almost immediately a suspect due to his own personal history, falsely alleged that Beers was kidnapped by a third party while at the Spaceplex indoor amusement park, but security cameras disclosed that Esposito entered Spaceplex by himself. Beers was held in a 6-foot-by-7-foot concrete bunker under Esposito's garage in Bay Shore, New York, concealed by a 200-pound concrete trap door. The bunker contained a commode toilet, television set, mattress and chains used to restrain Beers. Beers, along with other children, had played in the dirt displaced by the bunker as Esposito dug it a few years earlier. He told police he had built the bunker for Beers. On January 13, 1993, she was found alive in the bunker after Esposito led police to it.

Kathryn MacDonald: Jeff MacDonald Murder | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2529

(Note: Due to technical issues, only part of this interview is available.) The case of Jeff MacDonald has been infused with controversy since the murders took place, almost 39 years ago. Through it all, Jeff has steadfastly maintained his innocence. Over the many years since trial, thousands of pages of government reports, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, that prove the existence of outside assailants, have been obtained. In fact, not only do these documents show Jeff's claim of outside assailants to be true, they also show how the prosecution deliberately set out to suppress evidence supporting these claims before, during, and after his trial. The MacDonald case has served as an example of malfeasance in the investigation of the FBI Crime Lab's misconduct, and the case has been featured in numerous congressional hearings and in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe and The New Republic. In January, 2006, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals panel of three unanimously agreed that the affidavit of Jimmy Britt, a respected former US Marshal, was sufficient grounds to propel a rare fourth appeal (successive habeas petition) forward for review to the District Court in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jimmy Britt died in October, 2008. In November, 2008, the District Judge denied relief. The defense will appeal to the 4th Circuit. The MacDonald case is one of the most enduring and haunting legal cases of our time, and a torturous example of injustice and wrongful conviction. It continues to endure and weigh heavily on the public consciousness because the right conclusion has never been has never been issued in a court of law- that Jeff MacDonald is an innocent man and must be released. If guilt was so clear, its hard to imagine that the interest and emotion this case continues to proliferate would still exist nearly 40 years later. http://themacdonaldcase.org/index.html

White House Boys , Florida School For Boys | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7201

White House Boys , Florida School For Boys he Florida School for Boys, also known as the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (AGDS), was a reform school operated by the state of Florida in the panhandle town of Marianna from January 1, 1900, to June 30, 2011.[1][2] A second campus was opened in the town of Okeechobee in 1955. For a time, it was the largest juvenile reform institution in the United States.[3] Throughout its 111-year history, the school gained a reputation for abuse, beatings, rapes, torture, and even murder of students by staff. Despite periodic investigations, changes of leadership, and promises to improve, the allegations of cruelty and abuse continued. After the school failed a state inspection in 2009, the governor ordered a full investigation. Many of the historic and recent allegations of abuse and violence were confirmed by separate investigations by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in 2010, and by the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice in 2011.[4] State authorities closed the school permanently in June 2011. At the time of its closure, it was a part of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.[5] Because of questions about the number of deaths at the school and a high number of unmarked graves, the state authorized a forensic anthropology survey by University of South Florida in 2012. They identified 55 burials on the grounds, most outside the cemetery, and documented nearly 100 deaths at the school. The state said it did not have authority to allow exhumation of graves, which would permit determination of cause of death and identification of remains. (In addition it wanted to sell land on the property.) A family member of a student who died at the school in 1934, and who wanted to reinter his remains, filed suit and gained an injunction against the state's moving ahead with the sale before remains could be exhumed and identified. The state responded to the court injunction and authorized more work by a multi-disciplinary team from the University of South Florida, including exhumations. In January 2016, the USF team issued its final report, having made seven DNA matches and 14 presumptive identifications of remains. They will continue to work on identification. After passage of resolutions by both houses of the legislature, on April 26, 2017, the state held a formal ceremony to apologize personally to two dozen survivors of the school and to families of other victims. In 2018, bills were being considered to provide some compensation to victims and their descendants, possibly as scholarships for children. In 2019, during preliminary survey work for a pollution clean-up, a further 27 suspected graves were identified by ground penetrating radar. Many people, including former detainees, believe that over 100 bodies were buried on the schools grounds, and that further investigating should be done until all the remains have been identified and cared for.

Police Killing of Dontre Hamilton | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1174

On April 30, 2014, a police officer, Christopher Manney, shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, at Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. No charges were brought, but Manney was fired from the force. As a result of the shooting and subsequent protests, Milwaukee police officers were equipped with body cameras. Dontre D. Hamilton (d. April 30, 2014), of Milwaukee, was 31 years old at the time of his death.[1] Hamilton had a history of mental illness.[1][2] In 2013, he had made a suicide attempt by stabbing both sides of his neck and had been hospitalized. According to Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn, Hamilton had a prior history of arrests in Milwaukee which were "directly connected to mental health issues."[1] Hamilton's family stated that Hamilton had been treated for schizophrenia but was not violent.[2][3] In the days before his death, Hamilton told his family that he was "tired and hungry, and that somebody was going to kill him."[2] On April 30, 2014, Manney shot Hamilton fourteen times, killing him.[3] The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel summarized the events as follows: Before the encounter, a pair of officers responding to a call that Hamilton was asleep in the park checked on him twice and found he was doing nothing wrong. When Manney arrived, he was not aware that other officers had preceded him As Manney began to pat down Hamilton, Hamilton fought him, and a confrontation ensued. Manney tried to use his baton to subdue Hamilton, but Hamilton got control of it and swung at Manney, hitting him on the side of the neck, according to Milwaukee police internal affairs. No additional weapons were found on Hamilton's person.[3] Investigation The investigation was carried out by the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, a statewide agency, but the lead agents for the investigation were former Milwaukee police officers.[3] The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office conducted an investigation. In December 2014, District Attorney John Chisholm found the use of force to be in self-defense and declined to prosecute.[3][4][5][6] A federal investigation took place,[7] and was closed in November 2015, with federal authorities determining that there was insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights charges against Manney.[8] Firing of Manney After the shooting, Manney applied for duty disability, saying the shooting and its aftermath caused him to experience severe post-traumatic stress disorder.[3] Police Chief Edward Flynn fired Manney after the shooting.[9] In March 2015, a three-member panel of the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission unanimously upheld the firing, sustaining and confirming the two conclusions of an internal investigation, which determined that: Manney had conducted a frisking process without a reasonable suspicion. Manney did follow departmental "Defense and Arrest Tactics."[9] The firing does not affect Manney's pending disability application.[9] Lawsuit In 2014, Jovan Blacknell was retained by the family of Hamilton.[10][11] In 2017, the Hamilton family received a 2.3 million dollar settlement from the City of Milwaukee.[12] Protests Dontre's brother, Nate Hamilton, has also since co-founded the Coalition for Justice, an organization that has led rallies, marches, and street clean-ups. The Black Lives Matter movement has also protested Hamilton's death.[13] Policy changes In the aftermath of Hamilton's death, "Hamilton's family members worked with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, the Police Department and other city leaders to have all officers receive Crisis Intervention Team training, considered the gold standard for working with people in psychiatric crisis, by 2017."[3] Additionally, eight Milwaukee aldermen and a majority of the Milwaukee Common Council, called in December 2014 for equipping all city police officers with body cameras on an expedited basis.[14] In October 2015, the Fire and Police Commission...

 Corey Levitan : Who Is This A-Hole ? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3569

Corey Levitan : Who Is This A-Hole Thanks for asking! I’m a writer known for such intellectual pursuits as riding a public bus in a photo-realistic naked suit, spending an entire day covered from head to toe in sexual lubricant and inviting every Facebook friend I don’t know to dinner. The degree to which I’m less rich and famous than Dave Barry, Mike Rowe and Joel Stein probably does not reflect how much less funny and original I am than they are. However, I need to stop complaining, especially in a freaking bio. I’ve had many career highlights that few writers can boast of -- such as throwing out the first pitch for a Cubs-Mariners exhibition game, appearing as a Howard Stern guest for my journalism and having this Huffington Post story written about me. (Oh, also getting sexually harassed by Angelina Jolie.) If you do know my name, it’s probably because you have a good memory for articles that ran in Playboy that you seriously didn't want to take to the bathroom with you. I was the magazine’s resident stunt pickup artist from 1999 to 2004, the year I met my wife and had to stop or probably die alone. You may also know me as the most popular humor columnist in the history of Sin City. "Fear and Loafing" ran 176 times in the Las Vegas Review-Journal from 2006-2011, and this Wikipedia entry about it wasn't even written by me. I washed the windows at the top of the Stratosphere, go-go danced in a gay bar and delivered a Sunday sermon as a Lutheran minister. It was a sort of Dirty Jobs thing where I sampled different occupations, except with humiliation and fear in addition to dirt. And it actually began two years before that reality show, at a Los Angeles newspaper, so if you're going to accuse me of ripping anyone off, it should be George Plimpton (with George Costanza's attitude). But I seriously doubt you even know me from that, because most newspaper readers don't use computers. They are generally senior citizens who like to approach me in public to tell me how much they loved my column and then, when I invite them to visit this website, tell me how proud they are of never using computers. (“You see this?” they say, pointing to their heads. “This is all the computer I need, right here!”) Also, you clicked on a link titled “WHO IS THIS A-HOLE?” So that kinda tells me something right there. So thanks for stopping by! Make yourself at home, tool around my favorite columns and "ooh" and "ahh" at my abject self-degradation. I've suffered for my work; now it's your turn. By the way, can anyone hook me up with Dave Barry, Mike Rowe or Joel Stein?
