Provenance. What is it? How do you research it and prove it? It’s all about the story behind the item. Building and collecting the story behind an item is the way you maximize that item’s value. How do you get started?

Where can you buy and sell? What are the advantages and disadvantages of selling in different ways - from yard sales to auctions to internet to collector sales - and more!
WHY is something worth what it is. The art of appraisals. Establishing the fair market value. Importance of location, past sale history, research. How market changes impact value - time, tastes, comps, etc. Figuring in costs such as buyer's premiums, shipping. What is selling under duress? Liquidation value. Always remember - worth is what someone is willing to pay for an item in that moment.
Geography may be your biggest influence to determine what your market will be. Part-timer or an all-in career collector? Building your customer base that is specific to you. And building your network of resources in other areas who can help you. Why is continuity important to your business? Knowledge is power. Your market is only as good as the customers you have. What are the tools of the trade? When you start collecting and dealing in the antique world, you want to do it like a business. Because it IS a business. So, be prepared. Mental tools and physical tools. What's the $4.99 tool that is so valuable, you'll want to buy a bunch of them? The importance of the people you know, and how that network of friends and contacts is an important tool in your toolbox. Be prepared. Be friendly. Talk to strangers. Have an open mind.
