Hosts Nate and Ryan invite artists, authors, ethicists, pastors, healers, and pop stars to explore our origins and journeys toward more authentic lives. Nate and Ryan became best friends in college when Nate left for Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and attend UC. Ryan continued on to seminary earning masters and doctoral degrees. Season One explores Religious America and Sex as Nate and Ryan seek answers to questions that started years ago with the Evangelical Purity Movement.

How do we think theologically about Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:12, “For there are eunuchs who were born that way?” Dr. Megan DeFranza will unpack a reality few Christians are willing to acknowledge: There are as many people who are intersex as there are red-heads in the world. As you will hear, Megan grew up conservative Evangelical and leading into her doctoral research began considering a biological reality that didn’t match-up with a traditional view that God had created (only) male and female. Megan DeFranza is a Christian theologian, author, speaker, and facilitator of challenging conversations, especially around Christianity, sex, gender, and sexuality. She is Producing a documentary "Stories of Intersex and Faith" with Lianne Simon and Paul Van Ness and serves as a Research Associate at the Center for Mind and Culture in Boston and as a Visiting Researcher, Boston University School of Theology. Aussie documentary filmmaker Jesica Van Der WynGaard talks about how she directs and produces a film where Josh reconsiders some of the things he wrote 20 years ago. Surprising, 38% of Baptists indicated that they expressed a public sexual identity that was not consistent with their public sexual expression. Lyndsey Godwin of Assistant Director of the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender, and Sexuality at Vanderbilt Divinity School speaks from her experience in help students overcome shame-based sexuality programs while working with seminary students at Vanderbilt. When host Nate Novero left his Southern Baptist faith, his understanding of faith and church basically froze in time. Now that Nate is reengaging with his Christian heritage, he’s got a lot of catching up to do. The first of two podcasts, Episode 4 features Shawn catching up Nate on the national debate among church folk about what to do about sexual practice in light of Supreme Court decision on same sex marriage. They speak specifically about Southern Baptists, the Nashville Statement, and how all religious communities have to keep negotiating their personal ethics with one foot in their religious tradition and another in there modern context.
