 Episode 145: Paul Martini - Co-Founder and CEO, iboss | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:15

The best part of hosting The VentureFizz Podcast is getting a chance to talk to some of the most intelligent and driven entrepreneurs in the tech scene. Paul definitely fits the bill on both accounts. He is a highly accomplished technologist, who earlier in his career, actually worked on the broadband network infrastructure that we would all later know as the cloud. Paul, along with his twin brother Peter, founded iboss to address security issues for a mobile workforce. The problem is that traditional security appliances were ineffective at protecting a cloud-first and mobile world. The iboss cloud has solved this problem by providing organizations and their employees secure access to the Internet on any device, from any location, in the cloud. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * What it’s like founding and running a company with your twin brother. * A deep dive into the early foundation of Paul’s career and various technical initiatives he worked on. * The full background story on iboss and all the details on their platform. * Why they decided to move the company’s headquarters to Boston. * Advice for scaling a venture-backed company * And more!  Episode 144: Andrej Paule - Co-Founder and CEO, Sable | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:36

The concept of Sable was born based on Andrej’s own personal experience as an international student while attending business school at Columbia. The complexity and the process of getting a bank account set up was incredibly archaic and challenging. The same goes for obtaining a credit card and it all can take months to get set up. Like any ambitious entrepreneur, especially one who was interested in the Fintech industry, Andrej took action. Along with his co-founders, Sable is making banking in the US for internationals easy. This NY startup recently graduated from Y Combinator’s summer cohort. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Andrej’s background and professional history. * What led the team down the path of solving the problem of banking for internationals. * All the details on Sable and how they got started. * The challenges they had to be overcome while dealing with the complicated and regulated banking industry. * Advice on the application process at Y Combinator and how to maximize your company’s time there. * And more!  Episode 142: Oliver Wellington - Founder, Headliner | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:24

I used to envy… well let’s be honest, I was downright jealous of the other podcasts and their use of video for promoting their episodes. I would see a clip of audio transformed into a video with a cool wavy line that matched up with the voice of the guest. I thought… wow - that must be expensive to do that level of production. A few months ago, I discovered a company in NY called Headliner that makes it easy to create social video. No, this is not an advertisement, but we are users and fans of this product as it is incredibly intuitive and their freemium pricing model makes it cost effective. Headliner is being used by thousands and thousands of Radio Producers, Podcasters, and Publishers to generate a massive amount of videos per week. Oliver and his co-founder, Neil Mody, are serial entrepreneurs and this is their second company together. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Some observations and thoughts on starting a podcast. * How being in a band influenced Oliver’s professional career. * The details on their first company, Nrelate, which was acquired by IAC. * How Sparemin evolved into Headliner and all the details on the company, its tech, and future plans. * Advice on how to get feedback on your product from your customers. * And more! International expansion can offer a tremendous opportunity for companies, but it is also incredibly complex to hire employees in different countries. When you factor in the various legal, tax, and HR regulations that vary from location to location, it is a major undertaking that requires a lot of time, knowledge, and money. Nicole is an experienced entrepreneur, traveler, and philanthropist who started her first company in the Caribbean right out of college. After gaining industry experience in the software industry for an international business services firm, she founded Globalization Partners to address this issue of international expansion. Through its Global Expansion Platform, they make it easy to hire employees in more than 170 countries.  Episode 140: Lucy Deland - Partner, Inspired Capital | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:51

Lucy was a student at Harvard during the same timeframe when Mark Zuckerberg was starting Facebook. As we discuss in this podcast, Facebook was a key catalyst to ignited the entrepreneurial spirit at the institution. She was a co-founder and COO of Paperless Post, which included two other Harvard alumni. The company disrupted the online invitation industry by making the process a lot more elegant and personalized with a design-led philosophy, which was unique at the time. Lucy is now a Partner at Inspired Capital, an early stage investment firm that was recently launched by Alexa von Tobel. Very few people have the same level of knowledge about Artificial Intelligence than Max. He holds two PhDs, several patents, and co-founded Boston University’s Neuromorphics Lab. Yes, AI is a major buzzword heard across multiple companies these days, but Neurala is actually building AI… not just using it. The company’s technology has been deployed on 30 million devices globally and its Brain Builder platform has multiple use-cases for drones, robotics, smart devices, industrial inspection, and more.  Episode 138: Gary Hoberman - CEO & Founder, Unqork | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:24

For Episode 138 of The VentureFizz Podcast, I interviewed Gary Hoberman, CEO & Founder of Unqork. A perfect way to describe Gary is the word fearlessness and it is actually one of the core values at Unqork. He was a sponsored skateboarder as a child which taught him that it was ok to hit the ramp as hard you can, because at that point there is no turning back and failure is ok. You might get some bumps and bruises, but you can try again. This mentality has definitely carried over into his professional world as an entrepreneur. Unqork is the only no-code application platform built for the enterprise. The company recently announced an $80M Series B round of funding led by CapitalG and this was after raising their Series A round of funding back in April of this year, as well. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Gary’s career in terms of working his way through the professional ranks in the financial services industry to eventually lead a global organization as MetLife’s Co-CIO. * As a holder of eight patents, how he was able to inspire innovation in larger companies. * Why 93% of all projects fail and how that led Gary down the path of starting Unqork. * All the details on Unqork in terms of their technology and the value that it is driving within the enterprise. * How negative feedback from investors turned out to be a positive motivator. * Advice for corporate executives on taking the entrepreneurial leap. * And more!  Episode 137: Jeremy Hitchcock and Gray Chynoweth, Minim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:09

For Episode 137 of The VentureFizz Podcast, I interviewed Jeremy Hitchcock and Gray Chynoweth of Minim. Manchester, NH…or for you insiders, Manchvegas… it is where I grew up. My dad was an entrepreneur and he ran a leather coat factory in the historic mill buildings there. The same mill buildings were the home to a major tech company that played a key role in keeping the internet running (for real) and it was called Dyn - the leading cloud-based Internet performance and DNS provider. The company was started by WPI students and it went on to scale to an eventual acquisition by Oracle for a reported $600M. Jeremy Hitchcock was the CEO of Dyn and one of its co-founders. He is on to his next company which is called Minim. Gray is also an alum of Dyn and is now Minim’s CEO. Minim, as they put it, is on a mission to make home WiFi as safe and reliable as drinking water through its IoT platform that enables and secures a better connected home. The company is backed by Founder Collective and Flybridge Capital Partners. In this episode, we cover: * The current state of the tech scene in New Hampshire. * A deep dive into the story of Dyn from the early beginnings to acquisition. * All the details on Minim and their technology. * Advice for founders on raising capital. * A discussion about the acquisition process. * Recruiting members to your Board of Directors. * And more!  Episode 136: Jonathan Keidan - Founder & Managing Partner, Torch Capital | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:19

For Episode 136 of The VentureFizz Podcast, I interviewed Jon Keidan, Founder and Managing Partner of Torch Capital. Are there parallels between identifying musical talent that will become the next great recording artist and the next great entrepreneur who will transform an industry by building a unicorn company? There are definitely some similarities, as you are taking a risk by investing in the artist or the entrepreneur and betting on their ability to execute. We have definitely seen some crossovers from the music industry into tech investing with examples like Troy Carter or Guy Oseary. Jon is another example of a crossover whose career has transcended both industries and identifying talent has always been a superpower. He started his own music talent management company at a very young age and he worked on developing the careers of high-profile artists and since becoming an investor, he made early stage investments in lots of great companies like Sweetgreen, Acorns, Zocdoc, and many more. Torch Capital is a new investment firm that he founded with a $60M fund which will focus on investing in early-stage consumer companies. In this episode, we cover: * Jon’s early career in the music business and what he learned from running a talent management company. * The details on InsideHook, a digital media publication that he co-founded and was acquired. * How he became an investor and why he decided to start Torch Capital. * What he looks for when making an investment. * Why entrepreneurs should be careful about valuations. * Advice for founders on building a consumer brand. * And more! At 42 years old, he is still performing at an elite level in the NFL as the quarterback of the New England Patriots. As described by the company, TB12 is centered around a holistic philosophy for health and wellness by using workouts and nutrition to help you do what you love, longer. John Burns is TB12’s CEO. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Jannick Malling, Co-Founder & Co-CEO at Public. Public is a new kind of brokerage that makes it possible to buy any public stock with any amount of money commission-free. It is an idea that I wish existed when I was younger, as they are democratizing the public markets by allowing people to purchase slices of stock. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Sarah Downey, Principal at Accomplice, a seed-stage venture capital firm. In the past, there really weren’t too many career paths into the venture capital industry. Typically, someone joined a firm from a top business school or investment banking firm. In addition to Sarah’s role as an investor, she is also a community-builder. She is actively involved in Rev Boston, TUGG, and other non-profits. Welcome to Episode 131 of The VentureFizz Podcast, the flagship podcast from the leading authority for jobs & careers in the tech industry. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Dan O'Malley, Founder and CEO of Numerated. Dan has built a strong level of domain experience in the Fintech industry. What is really interesting about his career is how he’s been a driver of innovation at startups, as well as much larger companies. At Capital One, he built their payment product into one of the company's largest strategic initiatives. As CEO and Co-Founder of Perkstreet Financial, they built an online-only consumer banking startup, which just didn’t hit the market right from a timing point of view. He later joined Eastern Bank as the Co-Founder and Head of Eastern Labs, the company’s innovation arm which was built to help keep Eastern Bank competitive in their industry. It was this experience that has led to the founding of Numerated, a company that was spun out of the lab and is focused on helping banks grow relationships faster with its real-time sales platform. In this episode of our podcast, we cover lots of topics like: -How innovation works at larger companies. -Dan’s background story and a walk through his career. -All the details on Numerated’s platform and why the company was spun outside of Eastern Bank, plus its growth and hiring plans. -The current state of FinTech in Boston. -Advice for first-time entrepreneurs on raising capital. -And so much more.
