Episode 173: Webster and Calhoun vs. Trump and McCain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:22

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com John McCain's death and Donald Trump's subsequent snub have sparked a moderate debate over how to properly remember a political adversary. I believe no one did this better than Daniel Webster after John C. Calhoun's death in 1850, but of course the circumstances were different as was the character and legacy of the men in question. I discuss the issue in both contemporary and historical terms in this Episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 172: The Idea of the South? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:16

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Time Magazine thought it was necessary to produce a "Southern Issue." What does this mean? Is the South still the "other" in American society? Has it always been so? Is there an "idea" of the South that is different from the "real South?" Time seems to think so. I discuss their "Southern Issue" in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 171: State Independency | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:30:48

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com A listener sent me an email the other day (I do read them) about an argument he had with his father-in-law concerning the meaning of union, the American political structure, and the founding period. Now, I don't encourage listeners to get into heated debates with family due to my podcast, but I wanted to respond to his questions because this issue is at the heart of American federalism. I briefly responded that "your father-in-law is regurgitating the common argument of disagreement among the founding generation to show that there was never a consensus on the founding period. He is leaving out the clear evidence that the consensus emphasized the independent nature of the "States" (a conscious choice of term) and if you carefully read the NH declaration, it asserts that the Continental Congress would only be responsible for making war against the Empire but all internal affairs were to be handled by NH." I get into more detail in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 170: The Next Civil War | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:14

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Will there be another "civil war" and what would it look like? Are Americans so different today that this is a real possibility? Harry Crocker thinks so, and I tend to agree if we continue down the path of nationalism, top down, one-size fits all policies, and Cultural Marxism. The only real solution is to "think locally, and act locally." I discuss Crocker's American Spectator piece and all the juicy details in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 169: Secession and Reconciliation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:16

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Mainstream academics are beginning to pay attention to the issues of secession and "treason." Did Southerners commit treason when they seceded from the Union in 1860-61? Did Northern leaders violate civil liberties during the War? Most importantly, how did Americans, North and South, view these issues in the immediate aftermath of the War? And was "reconciliation" a bad thing? Two mainstream historians--Cynthia Nicoletti and William Blair--tackle these issues in recent scholarly works. I discuss both and the issue of reconciliation in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 168: How Can We Change the Supreme Court? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:27

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com I was asked on social media how I would alter the powers of the Supreme Court, the idea being that it should be the least powerful branch of the general government. This is a great question and one that I cover in part in my How Alexander Hamilton Screwed Up America. I discuss where the Court went wrong and one small thing Congress could do to make it better in this Episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 167: "Think Small" is Catching On | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:27:37

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com Think locally, act locally has been my podcast theme since its inception. It seems the idea is catching on. Even the normally neoconservative American Spectator published an article in June championing its merits. This would have been unthinkable just twenty years ago, maybe even ten years ago, but more Americans are coming around to the idea that not only is the central government too big, America is too big. I discuss the article on this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 166: The "Democratic-Socialist" Deception | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:19

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's victory in a New York Democratic primary has made her the recent media darling of the Left. It has also brought the term "democratic-socialist" to the fore. She can't define it. The media can't define it. Stupidity runs in packs. So I define it for you and explain why it is nothing more than communism dressed up to be "reasonable." You won't want to miss this episode.

 Episode 165: Time's Founding Fathers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:37

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Time Magazine produced a special issue on the Founding Fathers just in time for Independence Day. Great right? Wrong. This is the politically correct foil to my Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers (and for the same price!). I go over what they got wrong and very wrong--and why you should buy my three books that cover the Founding generation--in this Episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 164: Is Anti-Immigration Un-American? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:30:35

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com Some people would have you believe that being anti-immigration is not only un-American, it's a product of Nazi Germany. These same people insist that every effort to restrict American immigration has been based on race. Is this true? No. The role of the general government in immigration is, however, debatable. I discuss all of this in Episode 164 of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 163: Lincoln and Trump | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:26:14

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com Dinesh D'Souza will release another political documentary this summer. The topic? Lincoln, Trump and the "Death of a Nation." Lincoln worshipers firmly believe that he "saved America" during the War and if only we could have another Lincoln, America would be alright. This is problematic. I explain why in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 162: Why the War Still Matters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:55

https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com Why does the "War" still matter in 2018? This is a good question and one I seek to answer in my newest course for McClanahan Academy, "The War for Southern Independence." I give you the scoop on why the War was a transformational episode in American history and why everything that followed is current events.

 Episode 161: Harry Truman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:55

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com Every politician seems to like Harry Truman these days. Conservative Inc. admires his stand on communism and the Left understands that without Truman FDR's "Second Bill of Rights" dream would never have gotten off the ground. When everyone likes someone, it's time to reconsider how "great" they are. Truman is by far one of the worst presidents in American history, and I explain why on this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 160: The Cold War | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:57

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com I find the Cold War to be one of the most fascinating periods in American history. There are three distinctive epochs in the 250 years the United States has existed: The American War for Independence and the original federal republic (1776-1861), Lincolnian America and the quest for national greatness (1861-1945), and the Cold War (1945-present). Everything we do today and how we conceptualize the general government has been built in large part by the Cold War. To this day, pop culture, domestic policy, foreign policy, and military policy all have ties to Cold War America. I explain in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

 Episode 159: Jefferson and Missouri | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:45

https://brionmcclanahan.com/support https://mcclanahanacademy.com http://learntruehistory.com What did Jefferson mean when he wrote about the "fire bell in the night?" Most interpretations focus on slavery and the threats it posed to the stability of the Union, but this is reading history in reverse and it misses Jefferson's main point. The Union was in trouble because of the potential violation of the Constitution by those interested in political power. The Missouri Compromise represented the first conspicuous case of the sectional conflict spilling over into disunion. I discuss Missouri, Jefferson, and his now famous letter in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.
