The MV Podcast 013: We Will Find The Dubstep | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:31

Subscribe on iTunes We're back with episode 13 of The Modern Vinyl Podcast and this time it's highlighted by the debut full length album from Bleachers, Strange Desire. We have a roundtable discussion on the record, our second instance of this segment, and chat all about what makes the album a great pop record. Before that, we talk about Weezer's upcoming album and if it could possible be a mix of the blue album and Pinkerton, while then finishing out the night with a round of Pick Your Poison. Stick around to hear one of the greatest lines ever to appear in a Weezer song and for a quick chat about what bands I should see on Warped Tour. We'll be taking a week break after this podcast, but we'll be returning strong after the short hiatus. Sidenotes: — I talk about how Rivers Cuomo wrote an early album in a hotel under the highway. The actual story is that the band rented "a pad directly underneath the 405 freeway" and well, some strange things followed. Anyways, the entire story can be found here and is incredibly interesting. Not sure if he actually wrote an album "under the highway" but it's a part of their mythology. Timeline: 2:08, Weezer just dug their own grave 6:25, Can Weezer write lyrics like they used to? 9:50, We create the upcoming #hobocore genre (which apparently is a thing already?) 16:20, What the new album title could signify 17:20, Beginning of our Bleachers Strange Desire roundtable 22:08, Standout songs 33:49, Lowlights 44:50, Pick Your Poison (Weezer Edition) Can’t Stop Partying vs. Let It All Hang Out (and kinda vs. In The Mall) Music Intro Music from "Here Comes The Night Time," by Arcade Fire/Merge Records Roundtable Music from "I Wanna Get Better," "Like A River Runs," "Wild Heart" & "I'm Ready To Move On" by Bleachers/RCA Records Where To Find Us @getcerebral /@chrislantinen /@notmichaelpaul

The MV Podcast 012: These Are Dark Times | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:14

Subscribe on iTunes Despite the episode's title, we've got another fun installment of The Modern Vinyl Podcast, as we cover topics like the new Aaron West album and Urban Outfitter's reputation amongst record collectors. Stick around for music from Dads, Park and Vasudeva (one of the musical hauls I've been most proud of) and for our sap stories of concerts we've missed out on (where that title does come from). Upcoming episodes will cover the full length albums from Bleachers and Anberlin, along with what Weezer could be planning with their upcoming LP. Sidenotes: — I mention briefly that I've never really dug into Park's discography and the new EP would be a good starting point. That point remains, but man, I've been missing out on these guys. Catching up as we speak. — We mess around with the pronunciation of our final band, Vasudeva. But after official confirmation, it is "VA-SOO-DE-VA," so I did in fact "knock it out of the park" on my final try there. Apologies if we butchered it at all before that. — Also, I talk about the Sam Cooke contest we're running. Well, it's over now, but we had a great response to it so thank you. — I had the kinda funny response of "Asia" while trying to name off a place that doesn't really do too much with Record Store Day, but of course there are some areas of that huge continent that celebrate it. You can do an international search for RSD, here.  The MV Podcast 011: Julio Anta of The Native Sound | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:32

Sporting releases from the likes of John Vanderslice and Koji, along with buzzworthy roster signees Miserable and Vow, the label is certainly on the upswing and you would be wise to keep an eye on them.  The MV Podcast 010: Best of 2014 (So Far) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:38

Subscribe on iTunes We're in the double digits! And for the tenth episode of The Modern Vinyl Podcast we're talking primarily about the Best of 2014 at the mid-year mark. We talk best albums, vinyl packaging and most disappointing music, while also touching on what we're heavily anticipating for the last half. Stick around for some reader questions throughout the podcast and a round of "Pick Your Poison" which I'm hoping will eventually turn into a heated bloodbath between the three of us. And yes, there's three of us now as we quite enjoy when Mike stops by (you previously heard him on the Hebrews roundtable). We're hoping he sticks around! Coming up next, we'll have our episode with The Native Sound's label head Julio Anta. Timeline: 1:46, Beginning of Mid-Year Picks/Top 5 Albums 6:35, Chris finally turns off his fan (sorry!) 9:00, Extended talk on The Hotelier 13:55, Most Disappointing Releases 23:45, Best Vinyl Packaging 26:43, First Round of Reader Questions 34:00, Most Anticipated for Last Half of 2014 47:05, Second Round of Reader Questions 50:45, News Roundup 54:00, Random Pull 57: 15, Game Time: Pick Your Poison One Step Closer vs. In The End (Linkin Park) 1:09:00, Recommendations Notes: — We talk about how Manchester Orchestra lost a drummer at some point and that drummer's name is Jeremiah Edmond. He is indeed the head of Favorite Gentlemen. — The Hotelier did sign to Mightier Than Sword Records at one point, when they called themselves The Hotel Year. And Mightier Than Sword is now defunct. — My timeline for Linkin Park/System of a Down/POD is way off. I know this. — The Ghostbusters issue I mention at the end of the episode....just wait for episode 11 to put the pieces together.  The MV Podcast 009: Mixtape #1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:40

Subscribe on iTunes The Modern Vinyl Podcast is back with its ninth episode and its first of the "Mixtape" variety. Furthering our commitment to the music portion of the music industry, we've got 10 tracks for you guys today, along with a summer theme and tons of talk about the featured artists. Links to each of the tracks are available within the timeline and if you like what you hear, go ahead and support the artists by buying some vinyl, tapes or just by picking up the digital version. Coming up in the future, we've got one of our standard episodes, in which we'll talk about our picks for the best of 2014 (so far) and I'll also be doing an interview episode with Julio Anta, the man behind The Native Sound. So sorry about the couple week break, but we've got some great stuff coming up. And we both really believe in this mixtape format (as a little bit of a change up), so hopefully you guys will enjoy. Theme: From James Cassar: This is Modern Vinyl’s crack at creating a musical version of a day at the beach when you’re probably supposed to be doing something, somewhere else that many deem more important. But, that’s not what you necessarily think — you’re on the sand with your closest friends, some drinks, and transition from the surf to the city and back again as the light and the cityscape around you changes to accompany your day away from your responsibilities, because hey, you might not get many of those.  The MV Podcast 008: No Guitars Allowed | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:59

Subscribe on iTunes The eighth episode of The Modern Vinyl Podcast is a dandy, as we talk about the new album from Say Anything, Hebrews. James Cassar and Modern Vinyl contributor Michael Escanuelas join me in the roundtable, as we discuss if the "no guitar" experiment works, where Max Bemis is at in his songwriting career and if it was really necessary to yell swastika so many times. Stick around for the first edition of "Top of The Top 5," which has us listing off our favorite Say Anything songs (vote below); for some talk on the Blink 182 splatter series; and for when we dig into the Reader Mailbox. We did have some sound issues this time around and I apologize for that. We're gonna really work on eliminating that background noise next time around, while some Skype "beeps" and "boops" get in there toward the end. Again, apologies.  The MV Podcast 007: Jeffrey Silverstein & Chris Muccioli of Singles Club | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:19

Subscribe on iTunes For our seventh episode, we talked with Jeffrey Silverstein and Chris Muccioli of Singles Club, a really interesting 7" subscription series that impressed me both with their choice of artists and with their digital journal component, which you can actually check out for free, here. The club is limited to 250 members and for $65, you get the four 7" records, a box to house them in, a pin, a 45 converter and the digital download of both the music and journal. The interactive nature of the stories, along with what I consider some damn talented writing, made me want to go after these guys for an interview. We chat about all the angles to Singles Club, including why they actually funded themselves as a publishing project and about how they selected this first batch of artists. On top of that, we also have a song from each of the four artists they're featuring in the series this year, with two of those songs actually being the A-side of the corresponding 7" record. Stick around for some great music (very proud that we were able to feature all these artists) and my introduction where I talk about moving my record collection. The EP, to be released through True Grit Records on June 3rd, is a big step forward for the indie rock three-piece, now transformed into a full time gig for the three talented members, all of which I had the pleasure of speaking with. We chat about the inspiration behind many of the new tracks, while we also have the exclusive premiere of "Move," along with "Military Child." There really wasn't much information available at that time, which is why we didn't talk about it. That being said, we're still working into a groove here, so stick with us while me and James (my co-host) iron out a few of the details. Expect different guests, interviews, music from all kinds of awesome labels and what I'm sure will be an evolving format in the future.
