Black Pearl Show: Pirates of the Caribbean

The pirate of love, Elizabeth Swann engages in a battle of hearts and desires with the off-limits workingman Will Turner. In minute 9 of the Pirates of the Caribbean Minute we are introduced to our first real pirate; the pirate we all wanted to see. Meanwhile Scott may or may not call Elizabeth a dog and we theorize that pirates may have been the inspiration for Batman’s utility belt. Join us as we analyze The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Join us for minute 8 as we watch Will Turner seemingly nail and display his sword flipping skills while Governor Swann flinches and Elizabeth makes her grand Scarlett O’Hara stairway entrance. Scott and Heather also pretend to be sword experts and discuss how nice it is to have their own 18th century butler.

Governor Swann and high society constrict Elizabeth’s breathing with an incredibly tight corset while the pirate medallion is close to her heart - the symbolism goes deep in this minute! Governor Swann receives a visitor who promptly shows his nervousness and we highlight our two favorite lines from the first 7 minutes in a recurring segment we call Really Bad Eggs. Elizabeth brushes off dust from the gold medallion that she has been hiding in a secret compartment and decides to put it on…perhaps imagining what it would be like to be a pirate and reliving her experience on the HMS Dauntless. Join us as we wonder why the medallion has been hidden for so long, what other infamous pirate could have been Captain Jack Sparrow, and Heather pretends to be Dr. Evil.

A gold medallion, a pirate ship in fog, the Jolly Roger, and in a blink of an eye we are transported from Elizabeth’s past on the HMS Dauntless and her first encounter with pirates to her suddenly awakening from a startling dream as a grown woman. Join us for minute 5 of the Curse of the Black Pearl as we ponder if Elizabeth is really the first pirate we see in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

The merchant ship continues to burn and Gibbs chimes in with what everyone is thinking – Pirates! In addition to learning the rescued boy is Will Turner in minute 4, the Pirates of the Caribbean Minute hosts remember classic movies like Goonies and Jurassic Park and things take a gratuitous turn with true accounts of pirates and exploding ships.

A rogue parasol spins across the water, an unconscious boy floating on shipwreck, and an otherwise serene setting quickly becomes a barrage of flames as a ship appears to be torn in half and on fire. What happened here? Join us for minute 3 as we tackle the payoff from a buildup of eerie tension in the first 2.5 minutes…and discuss workplace safety on the HMS Dauntless and set a bar for future Fantasia references.

Lieutenant Norrington vows that all pirates will meet what they deserve, a short drop and a sudden stop. Meanwhile, Gibbs continues to headline our discussions from the importance of rum on ships to colorful superstitions.
