Nate Young, John Olson, and Crazy Jim Baljos are Wolf Eyes—the long-running Detroit noise institution. Their latest album, I Am a Problem: Mind in Pieces, is out now on Jack White’s label Third Man Records. For this episode of “This is How We Do It,” Young, Olson, and Crazy Jim invited Pitchfork writer Evan Minsker to MUG, their studio space in Detroit. As he walked in, Wolf Eyes were in the middle of their weekly jam session. They were also having a pizza party and getting ready to test out a gamelan robot.

Joe Casey, Greg Ahee, Scott Davidson, and Alex Leonard are Protomartyr—the Detroit post-punk band. Their third and arguably best album, The Agent Intellect, is out now on Hardly Art Records. For the first installment of “This is How We Do It,” Davidson invited us to his house—which is also their practice space, in Ferndale, Michigan—to discuss their new album and how their writing and recording process has changed since the release of their early singles and debut album No Passion, All Technique.
