ABCA Calls from the Clubhouse

Summary: The American Baseball Coaches Association "Calls from the Clubhouse" podcast runs the gamut of baseball coaching topics, from pitching, to hitting, to the mental game, practice planning, recruiting and more. The podcast is hosted by Jeremy "Sheets" Sheetinger and is accompanied by #ABCAchat sessions on Twitter. The American Baseball Coaches Association is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level, with over 8,000 members representing all 50 U.S. states and 23 countries. Since 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, Junior College, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. Each January, the ABCA hosts the largest baseball convention in the world. Over 5,000 coaches attend the convention, which is held at various locations around the country. With the 10th episode of our "Calls from the Clubhouse" podcast, we continue to highlight featured speakers from our upcoming ABCA Convention in Anaheim and we know our coaches are excited for this one! Tim Corbin - head coach at Vanderbilt University and 2014 national champion, John Savage – head coach at UCLA and 2013 national champion along with Paul Mainieri – head coach at LSU and 2009 national champion offer our coaches insight into their career paths, important lessons learned along the way and give our listeners advice to keep perspective on guiding our players. All three coaches dive into their humble beginnings as coaches and talk us through how they have worked to build three of the most consistent winning programs in the competitive world of college baseball.

In keeping with ABCA traditions and with a new membership year, its fitting that we lead off the fall podcast episodes with Gary Gilmore, head coach of NCAA Div. I national champion Coastal Carolina. Gilmore will be our first speaker at our upcoming ABCA Convention in Anaheim and we spoke to him about "Building a Championship Culture". From humble beginnings being named head coach in 1996 to national champions in 2016, Gilmore discussed the ups and downs of cementing culture throughout the entirety of his program, from the locker room to the weight room to the dugout and out on the field.

Roberts, a 2015 inductee into the ABCA's Hall of Fame and current base running consultant for the Chicago Cubs, discusses in detail the importance of developing a base running plan in your offense and how to incorporate this training into your practice plans. Roberts also spends time discussing the specifics of his base stealing approach, giving listeners tips and coaching cues to improving their players' reactions on the bases.
