Pastor With No Answers Podcast
Summary: Joey Svendsen, formerly of BadChristian Podcast, is a pastor who found freedom in gladly embracing mystery and relinquishing his long list of theological “certainties.” Growing up a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian, he now explores faith through progressive lenses while continuing connection with evangelicals, many who are part of the church he pastors at. Join Joey, his regular commentators and many special guests (progressives, traditionalists and evangelicals alike) as they discuss God and the Bible. Hear about Joey's experiences with mental illness. Reflect with us on stories of tragedy. Morgan joins us to share her appreciation for Badchristian and Pastor With No Answers as a lesbian listener. According to Morgan, this family of podcasts does well in keeping an open heart, admitting ignorance and approaching sensitive subjects with humility, something she says the church is unfortunately too often lacking. As a result, folks like Morgan go through seasons in which they are unsure if they have a place in the body of Christ.
Derek Snook learned Christian values at an early age and was troubled by what he saw as a lack of true empathy among many who worked to alleviate poverty. By living with (that’s right, living with) and getting to know personally many homeless folks, he learned just how difficult it was for this population to land and keep good jobs. He decided to start an organization to help fix this problem and wrote a book, The Definition of Success: What Living Homeless Taught Me, that tells of all these experiences. Listen to Derek’s story and the stories of many folks’ struggle with homelessness. dereksnook.net
I like sharing songs from my friends. “Sometimes I Forget” can be found on Apple Music and Spotify. Visit RobbieMadison.com for more info on Robbie. PWNA theme and background music brought to you by DanKoch.net
Starting a new Q & A segment, hosted by my good friend, Jack Hoey (the lesser). Want all your theological questions answered? He’s got you covered, unlike the pastor with NO answers. Today (and only this time) Joey asks Jack all the questions. Recently The BadChristian Podcast had two guests whom many would label heretics. They both have some non-traditional views on salvation, the after-life, Jesus’ divinity and penal substitution. Our ‘ol friend Jack tells us what he thinks. Radio show host, Christian, introverted, skeptical, highly analytical, and falls on the autism scale, Brant Hansen, reflects on his place in the church by writing Blessed Are the Misfits. Don’t feel like you fit in to most or all churches? Are you terrible at praying, hearing from God, telling people about Jesus and possibly prefer to be alone? Brant has a message for you. https://branthansen.com/
Joey’s sons chime in on the discussion of love and Joey shares a chapter in his book depicting the story of him and his wife’s terrible honeymoon. Lastly, there’s an important announcement from the get-go. Thank you listeners for making PWNA so fun to make!
A friend of mine drops in to share the story of how she lost her 5-year old brother to a tragic accident when she was eight. We discuss that tragic day and she reflects on her parents’ pain, shares how she processed this loss as a young child, and shares insight on some healing words that she has yet to hear.
Herman joins us to discuss his weed growing / weed selling career. What motivates him to sell weed? Is he constantly paranoid of getting caught? What separates him from many other weed dealers, where does he grow it, who does he sell it to? Hopefully this one will at the very least dispel some preconceived notions on marijuana and some of the good folks out there who sell it illegally.
De and Reconstruction With the Pastor and His Wife (part 1): Tracing our relationship back to the beginning and walking through time reflecting on where we were at in our faith 20 years ago, how we’ve changed and how we've influenced one another over time. In this episode, we discuss Pricilla’s early heartache on how the church wrote off LGBTQ lifestyle as sin, while Joey was fine with a “because the bible tells us so (it’s wrong)” mentality. Hear about Pricilla’s uneasiness concerning Joey’s admonishing to “make sure her dad was saved” before he passed away and how Joey instructed her in 2000 to vote for Bush because Gore was a baby killer. These stories and more.
Many of you know Chad as “the Tooth and Nail, Takehold, Come and Live” guy; now you can also know him as the author of the book, One Thousand Risks. Chad and I are both Christians with extremely different upbringings which seem to have amounted to significantly different beliefs and approaches to miraculous healing. We’ll just nickname this episode the “Iron Sharpens Iron Episode of Healing.” Are some given a unique gift of faith in healing? Is it okay not to pray for healing? Is there a right way to pray or a right way to believe? We discuss a little bit of everything healing on this one.
Ben DeBono has a relatively unique story, transitioning from a Protestant faith to reciting prayers to Mary and Saints of old, confessing sins to priests and working for one’s salvation. At least that’s most people’s perspective of Catholicism. Could our assessments be off? Let’s ask a Catholic.
We’ve all experienced it. Looking on the shelf at the grocery store, about to grab what you need when you see an organic option. You also see the substantial extra cost, but is it worth paying the money for the organic version? Or are we all being duped?
Joey invites a friend on who has a lot to say about the controversial topic of vaccines. Is it possible that health has been improved to such a high degree through medicine, we now want to pick apart the means in which we’ve gotten to this improved state? Michael Overcash graduated from med school in 2002, specializes in dermatology and knows a lot about a lot.
Joey brings a personal friend on who a couple years ago found himself in a scary struggle with anger. At its peak, he obliterated a door. Does a “regular, nice guy" who struggles with anger have the capacity to hurt his family and land in jail? We’ll never know with Joel because he took the road of accountability and transparency, inviting a few close friends into his personal business with hopes of sparing him from future mistakes. So far, so good.
