For internists not inclined towards cardiology or critical care, an ultrasound might be merely a diagnostic test to be ordered. Research and expertise in this field are expanding rapidly, however, and an affordable handheld ultrasound that can easily be carried in a white coat is likely not many years away. In this lecture, Dr. Nunley discusses the basic principles, physics, and ideas behind ultrasound to give a baseline for moving forward with additional training.   Dr. Nunley is a Professor of Medicine on faculty at the University of Louisville. He is the Clinical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Louisville and is a teaching attending in the MICU. Dr. Charles Moore covers more rheumatology topics including treatment of gout, psoriatic arthritis, and the clinical presentation of Sjögren's syndrome and sicca syndrome. Dr. Moore is an assistant professor of Medicine at University of Louisville in the department of Rheumatology. He trained in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at University of Louisville then completed a fellowship in Rheumatology at Vanderbilt University. He staffs the adolescent transition clinic for pediatric rheumatology, the lupus clinic, and the faculty practice clinic. Dr Moore's clinical research interests in health services include early detection in both RA and SLE and interventions aimed at enhanced follow-up rates in both these illness and in adolescents.

Dr. Andrew Defilippis discusses his very practical research into the data behind cardiovascular risk scores. His findings on variations between different cohort studies have been published and debated the Annals of Internal Medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25686167) this spring. As a set of tools we use daily in our outpatient primary care practice, a deeper dive into cardiovascular risk calculations fits our criteria for being both a Grand Rounds and Louisville Lectures talk. Dr. Andrew Defilippis is an Assistant Professor on faculty the University of Louisville's division of Cardiology. In addition to this, he is a researcher and is the clinical director for the University of Louisville's Cardiac ICU.
