Retired agent Stan Ragen served in the FBI for 29 years. During his career, he was a member of SWAT, the coordinator of the Evidence Response Team (ERT), and worked Crisis Management matters—both as an agent and squad supervisor. Due to his involvement with these programs, Stan participated in many of the major investigations handled by the New York Office. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Stan Ragen reviews the important role he played in coordinating the office’s extraterritorial response to crisis events around the world. Some notable examples are the El-Khobar Towers (Saudi Arabia); TWA flight 800 (NY); Egypt Air flight 990 (RI); USS Cole (Yemen); US Embassy bombings (Kenya and Tanzania); and the 9/11 attacks.  He also assisted in the New York FBI response to Hurricane MARILYN (USVI); USAir flight 1549 (NY); and Hurricane SANDY (NY). Retired special agent Toni Chrabot served more than 24 years with the FBI.  Her investigative specialties were public corruption, organized crime, and money laundering.  As a crisis negotiator she responded to a number of kidnappings and barricade situations and as an instructor at the FBI Academy she was designated a subject matter expert in intelligence, interview and interrogation.  She later supervised special agent operations at a satellite office out of FBI Detroit. Retired agent Dell Spry served in the FBI for twenty years. During his career, he primarily worked counterintelligence, counterespionage, and counterterrorism investigations. While assigned to FBIHQ, Dell was a member of the National Security Council Counterterrorism Working Group. He was liaison to the CIA Counterintelligence Center, Counterespionage Group and was the lead investigator for the FBI in the Aldrich Ames case. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Dell is interviewed about the two-year-long investigation where he, as the FBI case agent, along with a team of FBI and CIA personnel, was successful in identifying Ames as a KGB mole. Ames, who was directly responsible for the execution of several Soviet and Russian assets and operatives, was charged and convicted of espionage in 1994 and is serving a life sentence. Dell received the FBI Director’s Award for Excellence in a Counterintelligence Investigation and the CIA Director’s Meritorious Service Award for his efforts. Retired agent Jane Rhodes Wolfe served 20 years with the FBI.  Early in her career, she was assigned to the New York Field Office, where she worked financial investigations. As a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT), a collateral duty, she was deployed to Yemen following the bombing of the USS Cole, and, on 9/11, responded to the World Trade Center attacks and aided victims. Jane became a member of the PENTTBOM investigative team and also worked on the investigation of terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui.  In addition to management assignments at FBI Headquarters in Congressional Affairs and the Inspection Division, Jane began to concentrate on national security matters.  She supervised a Joint Terrorism Task Force in Chicago and oversaw the intake and analysis of suspicious activity reports. Retired agent Brig Barker served in the FBI for twenty years. As a combat veteran and a highly respected linguist with full fluency in Arabic and a professional working proficiency in German, during his Bureau career Brig was frequently deployed overseas to work on major counterterrorism matters. From 1998 until his recent retirement, Brig was assigned to operational investigations in Nairobi, Kenya; Kampala, Uganda; Cairo, Egypt; London, England; Freetown, Sierra Leone; and Tunis, Tunisia; to name a few. Retired agent Mike Rochford served in the FBI for 30 years, five years as a clerical employee and Russian translator, and 25 as a special agent. Prior to his retirement, Mike was Section Chief of the Espionage Section. Based on his language skill, Mike worked Foreign Counter Intelligence (FCI) cases for most of his career. While assigned as a supervisor at FBI Headquarters and in the field, he oversaw such cases as Aldrich Ames and Earl Pitts, and worked to identity six unknown subjects, government spies the FBI and CIA had been for years trying to uncover. One of those “unsubs” was eventually identified as FBI agent Robert Hanssen. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Mike Rochford reviews the investigation of  Hanssen, considered the most damaging spy in FBI history. Mike recruited the source, a Russian agent of the KGB/SVR, who provided the information that led to Hanssen’s identification. Retired agent Bea DeFazio served in the FBI for 23 years, seven as a member of the Special Surveillance Group (SSG) following spies in New York and 16 as a special agent. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Bea DeFazio reviews the last half of her agent career, where she worked undercover to ferret out child predators trolling in online chat rooms. She posed as a child or teen and engaged in conversations with child predators in an attempt to identify them and arrest them for exchanging child pornography—more appropriately labeled child sexual exploitation images—and/or soliciting in-person contact for sex. Bea said that this emotionally difficult work was by far the most rewarding she did for the Bureau. She also talked about her collateral duties as a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT) and, immediately after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Towers, working at the Fresh Kills landfill sifting through debris for evidence, personal items belonging to victims and human body parts.  Episode 027: Bill Grace – Mayor Slayer, Municipal Corruption | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:50

Retired agent Bill Grace served more than 33 years with the FBI.  In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, he is interviewed about conducting two high-profiled municipal corruption investigations at the same time, one directed at the corrupt activities of Camden, New Jersey Mayor Milton Milan and the other targeting Washington Township, New Jersey Mayor Jerry Luongo. Electronic and physical surveillance indicated that even before Milan entered municipal politics he was associating with a local drug dealer, as well as members of the Philadelphia mob and that he continued those relationships after being elected to City Council and then as mayor. During Milan’s corruption trial, the former head of the Philly mob cooperated and testified against him. The Luongo case was initiated based on a questionable local land deal, but resulted in the mayor being charged with the misuse of the township’s community fund. With the assistance of colleagues from the Cherry Hill Resident Agency (FBI Philadelphia Division), the IRS and the U. S. Attorney’s Office, both investigations resulted in both mayors being convicted and receiving jail sentences. Bill was given the nick-name “The Mayor Slayer.”   William P. Retired agent Sam Smemo served 26 years in federal law enforcement, 15 and a half years with the FBI and ten and a half years with the United States Marshals Service. After hunting dangerous fugitives during the early part of his career, once onboard with the FBI, Sam worked drug cases while assigned to the Philadelphia Division. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, he talks about a big marijuana shipment investigation that inadvertently resulted in the exoneration and release from jail of an innocent man wrongly accused of shooting a child during a drive by shooting. Identifying and bringing the real culprit to justice was a highlight of Sam’s career. But after witnessing the devastation caused by the tragic events of 9/11, Sam was compelled to transition from fighting the war on drugs to fighting the war on terror. He tells us about working on an extraterritorial case wherein the FBI and the American government desperately attempted to locate and rescue a U.S. citizen kidnapped in Saudi Arabia. Tragically, the businessman was executed by an Al Qaeda terrorist organization operating in the Arabian Peninsula. This episode of FBI Retired Case File Review is the second half of a two-part episode with former FBI agent Terry Hake. Terry continues his account of working undercover as a crooked defense attorney in the largest public corruption investigation in America. When the investigation—code named Operation Greylord—was initiated, Terry was a young Assistant State’s Attorney fed up with corruption in the Cook County, Illinois court system. During the investigation, he was hired by the FBI, first as a project development specialist and then as a special agent. In this episode, he also explains why, after being an employee for only seven years, he resigned from the FBI and instead continued his 23-year career in federal law enforcement at several other non-Bureau agencies. Terry wore a concealed recording device for three-and-a-half years fully aware that he could have been jeopardizing his reputation and law career in doing so. At the conclusion of the undercover operation, Terry testified in 23 trials over a 10-year period and eighty-three judges, lawyers, court personnel and policeman were convicted for accepting bribes to fix court cases.
