As musicians, they had no idea what they were getting in to; no member of the band had ever picked up a video camera, and Oliver thought video cameras were a type of teleportation device! But, they started slowly and worked really hard.  After two years they have accumulated hours of footage addressing countless lessons (Oliver is just about always up to something)! They consider this footage the pilot season of Hoot Quarters - a show named after the tree house The Hoots built and Oliver now calls home.   In the show, children are invited to join The Hoots as they teach simple lessons about music, education, and healthy living – all while demonstrating the powerful influence of friendship.  Episodes are shot in the same style as their music: to be enjoyable to the young and older. The video production style is intentionally quaint and retro. This is partly due to budget (they are 100% self-funded and could not afford Hollywood-like production quality even if they wanted to), but also because The Hoots want their audience to know who they really are.  A slightly vintage aesthetic matches their personality better than any Hi-Def. blockbuster could, and hopefully feels more authentic to their viewing friends as well. After spending just a little time with Oliver, two things became abundantly clear to The Hoots: 1) he is extremely lovable, and 2) he has some rather curious views. Specifically, he  In 2012, The Hoots decided to build a new practice space and spot to hang out. They thought a tree house would be fitting, and found the perfect tree for their house at an undisclosed Sacramento park. Fortuitously (since the Hoots had named themselves after the rad sound an owl makes), there was a purple owl named Oliver T. Owl already living in the tree they chose! Oliver decided to move into The Hoots’ new tree house; it was a bit fancier than the knothole abode he had been occupying. Together, they named their tree house Hoot Quarters.   The Hoots are a band from Sacramento, California. They write and perform original music for the young and older (seriously). Their sound is fun and whimsical, and their songs include lessons that never speak down to the audience, but that listeners of all ages appreciate and enjoy.  The Hoots have sold thousands of albums and have received international acclaim, receiving numerous accolades including a prestigious Parent’s Choice Award.

SendGrid recently closed a $33 million Series D funding round and now boasts more than 350 employees and a brand new, state-of-the-art office in downtown Denver. However, SendGrid’s humble origins stem from three passionate founders, Isaac Saldana, Tim Jenkins, and Jose Lopez, who set out to solve the problem of email deliverability in 2009. I had the opportunity to sit down with Isaac Saldana, one of SendGrid’s three co-founders, and the first CEO of the company, to discuss how the business was started. During our in-depth conversation, we discussed Isaac’s past as an entrepreneur, his motivations for starting SendGrid, finding initial product-market fit and the keys to SendGrid’s ultimate success. The story and glimpse into Saldana’s mindset that follows are sure to be invaluable for aspiring entrepreneurs and seasoned professionals alike. Before There Was SendGrid… For such a successful founder, Saldana is extraordinarily humble and attributes much of his success to luck. “This thing is hard and it’s not going to be given, but consider that a lot of it is luck and just part of the process. So, if you never create a successful startup, it doesn’t mean anything. It just means you didn’t get as lucky as the other person.” Isaac Saldana While luck was certainly part of the equation, Saldana’s goal was to objectively identify why SendGrid’s founders were able to succeed in spite of the unfavorable odds facing startups. For Saldana, curiosity and persistence were instrumental in identifying a challenging, widespread problem and forming the right team to build a solution. Consider that SendGrid was Saldana’s fourth startup. To put that into perspective, Saldana had worked on “failed” startups for six years before even beginning on SendGrid, which doesn’t sound lucky in hindsight. While all of those businesses failed from a financial standpoint, they provided invaluable experience that would lead to SendGrid’s success for a number of reasons. Saldana developed meaningful working relationships in running startups with SendGrid co-founder Jose Lopez and SendGrid’s 5th employee, Elmer Thomas. Saldana, Lopez, and Thomas learned from mistakes they had made in previous businesses. Past business initiatives From 2009 to March 2012, Shah served as the first CEO of the Carbon War Room, the global organization founded by Richard Branson and Virgin United that works to harness the power of entrepreneurship to deploy solution technologies at scale. Prior to his tenure as Carbon War Room CEO, Shah's founded SunEdison in 2003. The company simplified solar as a service through the implementation of the power purchase agreement (PPA) business model. That model changed the status quo, allowing organizations to purchase solar energy services under long-term predictably priced contracts and avoid the significant capital costs of ownership and operation of solar energy systems. The SunEdison business model is a recognized catalyst that helped turn solar PV into a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. This Entrepreneur Plans to Save the World, $1 Trillion at a Time “Impact to me means $1 trillion,” says Jigar Shah, president and co-founder of Generate Capital, a new specialty finance company that works with project developers and technology manufacturers to finance what he calls “the resource revolution.” First, a little background on Shah. As the founder of solar giant SunEdison, Shah cracked the code and laid the foundation for the explosive growth of not only SunEdison, now worth more than $5.5 billion, but also Elon Musk’s SolarCity and others. His no-money-down, pay-as-you-save business model unlocked the hundreds of billions in secondary financing that has driven the quadrupling of installed U.S. solar capacity in the past five years. Last year, solar and wind together accounted for more than half of new U.S. electrical generating capacity. “Impact means people follow you,” Shah adds. Since he left SunEdison five years ago, Shah has worked through outfits such as Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room, where he was founding CEO, to build the business case for scaling up other clean-tech industries. At SunEdison, Shah helped introduce the 20-year power purchase agreements that bring together customers, investors, clean-tech manufacturers and government regulators with terms they can all understand. SunEdison would install and service the equipment, ensure it performed as expected and deliver reliable, long-term dividends to investors. Generate Capital, launched last year by Shah and co-founders Scott Jacobs and Matan Friedman, aims to demonstrate the investment opportunities in other proven approaches in renewable energy, energy storage and energy efficiency. The firm already has north of $100 million to begin underwriting clean-tech projects. Though some impact-driven family offices are on board, Shah is seeking mainstream investor capital.
