Charlton: The Movie with Keith and Jackie | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:40

The Charlton Comic Group, part of Capital Distributing Company (CDC), was notable for printing music and pop culture magazines such as “Song Hits”, “Hit Parader” “Tiger Beat”, and “Hustler” alongside a list of comic book titles spanning the genres of horror, westerns, romance, comedy, adventure, action, war and superheroes. Unlike its rivals Marvel and DC, Charlton's comic book line of printing was given little to no managerial oversight. “They didn’t care much about what was coming off the presses. They were just interested in keeping their presses rolling 24hours a day. So that is how they got into comics in the first place, just as a way to keep those presses going.” explains Paul Kupperberg, accomplished writer and editor of comics. What is unknown to most, is the long list of renowned comic book talent that once produced content for Charlton. Such names include Marvel and DC Comics legends: Denny O’Neil, Steve Ditko, Dick Giordano, Bob Layton, Paul Kupperberg, Joe Sinnott, Roy Thomas, Frank...  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Actress and author When Kathryn Leigh Scott's husband was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disease for which there is (so far) no cure, it was a devastating time for both of them, not least because so little is known about the cause or treatment of a disease that affects some 20,000 Americans, a number similar to that of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). Last Dance at the Savoy is both a personal story about Scott's husband, Geoff Miller, the founding editor of Los Angeles magazine, who lived life fully despite having a terminal illness, and a sharing of her insights on dealing with the day-to-day issues of caring for someone with a progressive neurological condition. Scott "often yearned for someone to figuratively take my hand and walk with me through the difficult times; I hope through this book I can reach out to you with encouragement and practical advice."  Jazz All-Star Raul Midon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:29:35

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón has earned renown as one of music's most distinctive and searching voices. He is "a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus," according to The New York Times. Midón has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, along with contributing to recordings by Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee's She Hate Me. The New Mexico native, blind since birth, has released seven albums since 1999, including the hit studio productions State of Mind (Manhattan/EMI, 2005), A World Within a World (Manhattan/EMI, 2007) and Synthesis (Decca/Universal, 2009). Midón's most recent release is the captivating CD/DVD Invisible Chains – Live from NYC. Attuned listeners can hear the inspirations of Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens in his work, as well as Sting and Paul Simon. But Midón's questing musicality makes him, as the Huffington Post put it, "a free man beyond category."  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kliph Nesteroff and "The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and the History of American Comedy" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:13

InThe Comedians, comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff brings to life a century of American comedy with real-life characters, forgotten stars, mainstream heroes and counterculture iconoclasts. Based on over two hundred original interviews and extensive archival research, Nesteroff’s groundbreaking work is a narrative exploration of the way comedians have reflected, shaped, and changed American culture over the past one hundred years.Starting with the vaudeville circuit at the turn of the last century, Nesteroff introduces the first stand-up comedian—an emcee who abandoned physical shtick for straight jokes. After the repeal of Prohibition, Mafia-run supper clubs replaced speakeasies, and mobsters replaced vaudeville impresarios as the comedian’s primary employer. In the 1950s, the late-night talk show brought stand-up to a wide public, while Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, and Jonathan Winters attacked conformity and staged a comedy rebellion in coffeehouses. From comedy’s part in the Civil Rights movement and the social upheaval of the late 1960s, to the first comedy clubs of the 1970s and the cocaine-fueled comedy boom of the 1980s,The Comediansculminates with a new era of media-driven celebrity in the twenty-first century.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
