Episode-1271- Dr. Nate Story on Vertical Farming and Aquaponics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:58:07

TweetDr. Storey of BrightAgroTech.com Dr. Nate Storey is the co-founder, inventor, and CEO at Bright Agrotech, an innovative vertical farming start up on the high plains of Laramie, Wyoming. Nate and the Bright Agrotech team seek to empower commercial producers and home growers alike to grow a lot more nutritious produce with less space with their ZipGrow tower technology. Dr. Storey earned his PhD. from the University of Wyoming in Agronomy researching aquaponic production and different creative live distribution models to help farmers live better. His research was in direct response to the many barriers there are to getting into farming and living well as a commercial producer today’s world. Not only is the cost of land and equipment going through the roof, but also new farmers face substantial costs when harvesting and packaging their produce. A cost that Dr. Storey sought to dissolve with ZipGrow products. This technology allows the farmers to outsource the ha rvesting and packaging their crops to the consumers in turn giving the customer the freshest produce possible. Join Us Today for a Discussion on Growing More in Less Space Including… What’s wrong with the current food system Why should we be growing some/most of our own food What exactly is aquaponics Why grow food vertically Are there any inexpensive ways to get into aquaponics What fish work best in aquaponics systems How small should as system be before it is too small What is zip grow and why is it cool How can packaging be eliminated from the food system Where can you learn more about aquaponic systems Resources for today’s show… The Year 1271 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) BrightAgrotech.com VerticalFoodBlog.com Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1270- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part Four | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:17

TweetFour weeks ago I did a show called Food Forestry and How it Actually Works. In that show I asked for specific food forest questions. The response was so heavy that a three weeks ago I did Episode-1251- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part One and wasn’t able to cover all the questions by a long shot. So two weeks ago we did Episode-1258- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part Two and we were still far from done, so I did, Episode-1263- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part Three.  Even with that we still have more questions, a lot of them and some very good ones. Given the huge volume of questions it is clear there is a tremendous amount of interest in this topic and there should be. Nothing can provide the sustainable food and resources like a well managed forest be it small or large. If you didn’t listen to the first four shows, you might want to do so before listening to this show. The reason being is that this show is a direct result of questions that I asked the audience to send me at the end of the first show and the answers given on the next two. Hence much of what was covered there I will be assuming you have already heard today. The reality is a food forest is both simple and quite complex at the same time. The complexity is based on the system that develops, the massive numbers of interrelationships and the fungal networks, guilds, etc that are formed. Join Me Today As I Answer Your Questions Including… Is chop and drop selective pruning or cutting to the ground Do you cut up branches into small parts with chop and drop What about attracting wildlife like snakes into forest litter Where exactly do you drop the chop Should you spread wood chips on pasture (probably not) What should you do if your house is on your properties southern edge What are some ways to make a hot micro climate Broadcasting seed over a burnt area and dealing with birds Thoughts on integrating hugul beds and swales Are there “dwarf” nut trees or can you make your own How do you choose food forest species Choosing cover crop mixes, no Lawton’s mix isn’t a secret, Sepps is, I don’t care though When you clear scrub forest to create food forest how do you cut the existing trees To prune or not to prune, is that even the question My final discussion on mosquitoes and I mean it, NO MORE, stop freaking the hell out folks!  Episode-1269- You Are Your Only Solution | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:10

TweetLike It Or Not, You Are Your Own Answer! Day in and day out I get emails from listeners that mean well, but frankly most don’t get it.  They are emails about passing a law for this or that, as if that would really fix anything.  Franky I am at a point where the only laws that need be passed would be a law undoing an existing law.  Government and restrictions on liberty are the problems, hence stop looking for solutions from the people causing the problem. Some sound good, such as, people that want to amend the constitution to say, “Congress shall make now law that “all laws made by Congress applying to citizens of the United States apply equally to members of Congress themselves”.  Sure that sounds good but you are saying, please let us ask the wolf and the fox to pass a law that says they can’t raid the hen house.  How likely is that to work? It doesn’t help that this myth is attributed to Warren Buffet who first never said it and secondly shouldn’t be trusted any more then Barack Obama or George Bush, in other words not at all.  The government has created every single major problem it is currently trying to supposedly solve.  Let me be blunt you are NEVER EVER NEVER, going to see a world where our government becomes “good” or “smaller” or “less corrupt” unless it simply fails and even that is no guarantee of anything.  Sorry to tell you folks but you are your ONLY solution to any and all real problems that you and your family will face. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Stop worrying about the next disaster and see the one you are in right now Stop being so pissed off about “rounding errors” Why government not only won’t but can’t and never will fix our problems Why you would not government to fix things even if it could The lesson of your destitute, drunken, dope addicted “Uncle Sam” What you must do to thrive in coming years You are your own answer You have to learn from boxers and MMA fighters, train before a fight! But what about community, it isn’t just me is it Take responsibility for your food Take responsibility for your health Take responsibility for your education Take responsibility for your own waste Take responsibility for your own energy Do shit and never apologize for doing good shit!  Episode-1266- Geoff Lawton and Jack Spirko on Permaculture’s Future | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:50

TweetGeoff Lawton – Permaculture Artist Today we have the great pleasure of having Geoff Lawton on to discuss many of his new upcoming free videos, his recent online PDC and how he feels Permaculture is changing the world.    The interview segment was pretty short because we had many and I mean MANY technical issues with lag across skype. We always have a bit due to distance to Australia alone but this time was something we could barely work though.   Geoff was a champ though and worked though it.  I then went and spent over an hour editing things out and cleaning them up.  Tune in today and you will  hear more on what I had to do to get the recording to the quality it is now, and it is pretty damn good.  Suffice to say we had about 37 minutes of audio an after I removed echos, lags, dead spaces, etc we ended up with a segment of about 24 minutes! Funny enough the recording works great, it was often the case that we had 10 seconds of silence but all the words actually came though on the other side.  Anyway just know a LOT of effort went into making this interview work on both ends. The great part though is I was able to include more content on my own for you guys today in reference to two of Geoff’s coming videos.  One which came out today and one that will be coming soon.  Reason being is I have quite a bit of knowledge about both sites. One is Eric Toensmeier’s home in Massachusetts.  I will fill you guys in a bit about what you might be seeing from one of Geoff’s videos on this property because it is featured in Eric’s book that he co-authored with Jonathan Bates called Paradise Lot.  I heard about that book from Dave Jacke and found it to be a great read. Secondly, when Geoff mentioned the video being released today he discussed that is was about suburbs and flat lands.  What he didn’t say was that it was based on Village Homes in California.  What is great about this is Bill Mollison visited this location in 1983 and you can see it at that time in Bill’s video from the Global Gardener Series.  What I did was watch the segment from Bill’s trip in 83 and then watched Geoff’s new video twice so I can discuss the impact of this showcase of permaculture for you. Lastly I just read an incredible article by Geoff about what they did to establish a farm in Jordan.  The results are pretty amazing but the one big takeaway for me was the structures that span swales in it.  These are basically arches that shade the swales to reduce evaporation and almost make a swale into a low tech chinampa system.   I am now considering how to implement this system on my property.  Episode-1264- Winter is Here and it is Only Going to get Colder | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:44

TweetSwales Full of Ice After 6 Full Days, Click for a Full Sized Image Despite the dire warnings about global warming from many the current belief now seems to be a century of cooling may be on the way.  In fact while we were told there would be no ice sheets in the arctic by 2013 the latest reports on the artic ice sheet is that there is.. “An unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia’s northern shores” Source Link Which is interesting because the northern climate is only just now heading into the depths of its winter.  As for the antarctic ice sheet it is in fine form and growing everywhere save for one spot.  However in that one spot it turns out that there are active volcanoes under it.  Yea really you just can’t make this stuff up. Today’s show isn’t about debunking global warming though or even climate change.  In fact I am going to start today with a little side note on the real damage I feel is being done to our climate by man. What I actually want to talk about today is simply dealing with the cold, because this winter folks, is going to be one of the coldest you have seen in a long time.  I think most people in northern climates will experience a very cold winter but they will do okay.  If you are used to lows in the teens and end up with lows in the single digits you aren’t happy about it, but you are prepared. If however you live where frosts are generally mild and you typically only dip into the 20s a few times a year, this winter could be a game changer.  Spoiled southern gardeners may find themselves planting a month to 6 weeks later this spring, or perhaps needing to create cloches and low tunnels like their norther brethren have been doing all along. Dallas – Forth Worth where I live was just shut down for 4 full days due to a few inches of ice.  While many in the north mock this, it is mocked due to extreme ignorance.  Brother give me a foot of snow over an inch of ice any day.  Road crews in the metroplex finally had to break out scrapers and graders to remove ice, this equipment wasn’t designed for such a job, but it worked.  However it took them so long to figure it out, that most of the ice had melted before they got started, in fact in many ways in some areas they made the problem worse! Two nights ago I watched a car get stuck on cobble stone ice on I-20 while sipping a hot chocolate on my couch.  By the time recovery vehicles got to him, his car had quite literally FROZEN TO THE ROAD. All of this has made me reevaluate my cold weather planning and may be you should too.  Despite what we are told by a main stream media that has a political agenda it is quite likely that this type of winter may become the norm in coming years.  I mean I could cite more science on this but let me just say, I believe if something has happened before it could happen again.  Unlike a lot of younger folks out there I remember the winters of the late 70s and early 80s.  Hell I remember snow in mid March in Jacksonville Florida, if I had to put a year on it I would bet it was 1980. Join me today as I take a hard look at what I now consider to be a big hole in my own preps, dealing with cold weather.  We are not unprepared, but we are Dallas Texas prepared and it seems like it might be a better idea to get say Tennessee prepared, and you guys in Tennessee, you may want to check out what the guys up in Chicago and Boston do, yea I am serious.  Better to be over prepared then under prepared.  After this recent ice storm I feel quite under-prepared. Join Me Today as I Discuss… Yes I think we have screwed up earth, here is how, now lets move on Some of the many reasons ice is worse than snow Why we almost always get ice, sleet or very heavy wet snow in the south The reality of government being unprepared and what it means for other things Vehicle mobility, why staying home isn’t always an option Tire [...]

Episode-1258- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part Two | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:50

TweetTwo weeks ago I did a show called Food Forestry and How it Actually Works.  In that show I asked for specific food forest questions.  The response was so heavy that a week ago I did Episode-1251- Food Forest Questions and Answers – Part One and wasn’t able to cover all the questions by a long shot.  So today we have part two. If you didn’t listen to the first two shows, you might want to do so before listening to this show. The reason being is that this show is a direct result of questions that I asked the audience to send me at the end of the first show and the answers given on the second one. Hence much of what was covered there I will be assuming you have already heard today. The reality is a food forest is both simple and quite complex at the same time. The complexity is based on the system that develops, the massive numbers of interrelationships and the fungal networks, guilds, etc that are formed. Join Me Today As I Answer Your Questions Including… What is the human element in maintaining and established forest When, where and how do animals fit into forest establishment and management How can you tweak guilds and add species after establishment Top support trees for temperate climates Using so called “invasive species” in permaculture Guiding with trees like black walnut and pecan that are alleopathic Where to plant support trees and how far to space them The Judas tree as a support tree What is “texture in a landscape” Resources for today’s show… The Year 1258 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom Get TSP Copper Sentinels TSP Gear PermaEthos.com Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Where you can get “Wisconsin Pecans” Plants that do Well with Black Walnut and other juglone producers The Judas Tree – Similar to Eastern Red Bud but it fixes nitrogen.
