Broken to Bold :: Mo Isom [Ep 168] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

All-American soccer star Mo Isom shares her powerful testimony of meeting God in times of peace and adversity. Outwardly, her life seemed like a success, but she was battling an eating disorder, the suicide of her father, and a horrific car accident. It wasn’t until God wrecked her life that she fully realized the power of the Gospel. What we chat about: Mo’s history with eating disorders and sports in high school Her faith journey toward healing and learning to walk out her personal faith How a transactional view of God (we praise him, he blesses us) is a twisted view of faith A tragedy in Mo’s family that caused her to run from God Mo’s major turning point and encounter with God in the midst of a car wreck God’s sovereignty and consistency, especially in our pain and sin When Mo and I were in Israel together The realities of Jesus’ birth: the location and true complications that Mary faced Connect with Mo:   Links Mentioned: * Mo’s Book: Wreck My Life: Journeying from Broken to Bold** * When Moms Walk Through Grief with Stacey Thacker (Ep 76)  * “I Wasn’t Ready to Say Goodbye: Surviving, Coping, & Healing After the Sudden Death of a Loved One” by Noel & Blair** **Amazon Affiliate Link How to listen to the podcast: 1.Listen on the blog. Click through to GodCenteredMom.com and click the play button at the beginning of this post. 2.  The Chivalry Movement :: Heather Haupt [Ep 167] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Inspired by medieval times and stories of brave knights, Heather Haupt created a Knight’s Code, based on the code of chivalry.  She then trained her young sons to fight for what is right and good and defend the weak. Now, nearly five years later, Haupt has written a new book, “Knights in Training” exploring ten principles for raising honorable, courageous, and compassionate boys. “Respect is so important to men, and when they recognize that God is worthy of respect, they are going to give their allegiance–they are going to be unflagging, undaunted and immovable. It is really cool to get our boys to that point.” What we chat about: Homeschooling her crew and the ultimate guide to brain breaks How Heather adapted the medieval code of chivalry to inspire to her sons Using the chivalry challenge to keep discipline interactions positive Motivating boys to see God as the ultimate coach who expects great things from his men, but cares about them personally Fostering respect for God in boys vs focusing on connecting with feelings Teaching your sons to stand against injustice and evil because people are made in the image of God Boys innately desire to defend and protect others, and those tendencies need to be encouraged The history of the code of chivalry and how culture has drifted from those ideas Connect with Heather:   Links Mentioned: * The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks Free printable knight’s code and training log: http://www.heatherhaupt.com/restoring-chivalry-and-civility-free-printable Knights in Training book** **Amazon Affiliate Link How to listen to the podcast: 1.Listen on the blog. Click through to GodCenteredMom.com and click the play button at the beginning of this post. 2.  Raising Rock Stars on a Firm Foundation :: Helen Smallbone [Ep 166] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Ever want to hear from the woman behind rock star kids? In this episode, Helen Smallbone, mother of 7 grown children including Christian music stars Joel and Luke Smallbone (For King & Country) and Rebecca St. James, shares stories of motherhood and practical advice she’s learned along the way. She and her husband moved their family from Australia to America more than 25 years ago. It was a faith-building journey that changed their family forever.    “Sometimes when you face life crises what God’s doing is setting a new foundation. In this time, he took everything away from us,” Smallbone said. “We had no money, no resources, no family and no friends.  But in that refining process, he gave everything back to us, but with a new foundation where he was the provider. He showed himself to be faithful for providing all our needs.” What we chat about: Stories of living by faith and God providing for the Smallbone family when they moved from Australia to America Homeschooling a large family and fostering responsibility and work skills in your kids Teaching family values while dealing with bad attitudes and behaviors in your kids Taking a “time out” as a mom to pray for your children and waiting on the Lord for breakthrough for specific ways to resolve behavior problems Focusing on the eternal value of building relationships with our kids versus the temporary focus on everyday tasks Spending time with children who may be acting out because they need more attention How quantity time often becomes quality time with our families Taking a traditional naptime or quiet time after lunch with fill yourself up to finish the day strong as a mom Keeping the communication line open with your children no matter their age.  Choosing Real Over Fine :: Rachel Martin [Ep 164] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Imagine you see smoke coming out of the hood of your minivan. Then just seven minutes later from a safe distance you and your kids watch that van become engulfed in flames. Tragic and terrifying. But that smoke served as a warning. The van was not ‘fine’. And by heeding that warning, lives were saved. What about when our emotions give us warning signs? Recurring anxiety or anger or shame. Do we ignore them and continue to wear the mask of ‘fine’? Or do we reach out to someone and accept help? Today’s guest, Rachel Martin (founder of FindingJoy.net), personally understands both of the above scenarios. The van story is hers from a week ago. And the second part. . . Well, while living the life of a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of seven children, Rachel hid behind a masked utopia. Not letting anyone see the truth of what was going on in her home. Then four years ago Rachel became a single mom, solely responsible to provide for her children. The mask was removed. You are worth more than ‘I’m fine.’ ‘I’m fine’ is a lie. -Rachel Martin For years Rachel has written encouraging words to moms, helping us find joy in the hardest places. She writes about real life and noticing treasured moments. If you’re looking for a “mom boost” definitely check out some the posts I’ve linked below. You won’t be disappointed. AND (so fun) we get a chance to rally around Rachel and help her purchase a new car! Check out the GoFundMe account her friend set up (she did NOT ask me to promote this. . .I believe having scheduled her to be on the show before the van fire was a “God-incidence”). What a great way for the GCM podcast community to show this consistent mom-encourager a dose of God’s love and encouragement! What we chat about: * Did writing about motherhood change now that her oldest children are adults. * How do you manage the tension of being fully present and keeping a home. * How Rachel stinks at playing with her kids. * The masked utopia Rachel created for years as a stay-at-home/homeschool mom. * The transition to being a working single mom of 7. * The fear that kept Rachel from taking the mask off. * Not letting emotions drive the bus. * The story of Rachel’s mini-van blowing up and how God protect her family. * How we ignore warning signs in our life and don’t accept help. * The FLASH MOB of love we can show to Rachel. . .helping her buy a new van!!  Perspective from Pastor’s Kid & Single Parent :: Barnabas Piper [Ep 163] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Balancing honesty and privacy can be a bit tricky for any of us. But even more so when your dad is the well-known pastor, John Piper. This week I’ve invited Barnabas Piper on the show. Recently he and I traveled with a group to Israel. While touring sites, riding the bus, & sharing meals I gained an appreciation for Barnabas’ unique experience and perspective. In this episode we cover three main themes: life as a pastor’s kid (which he wrote about in his first book), grief from a marriage ending, and intrigue about Israel’s political situation. Barnabas shares helpful tips on managing family devotionals (especially if dad is a pastor). He also lays down a challenge to dads about doing dad things (without expecting praise). Lastly, he and I recount the Middle East “insider insight” we gained during our Israel trip (and how it applies to parenting). What we chat about: * What’s it is like being a pastor’s kid * How a pastor’s family’s should approach family devotions. * What does “time in the Word” look like with his girls. * The grief of Barnabas’ recent divorce. * The balance of honesty and privacy. * The hardest parts of being a single parent. * What we learned from Israeli military strategist, Elliot Chodoff. * Thoughts from an Arab-Muslim Journalist about Palestinian conflict.
