Centinel allowed that the Articles of Confederation were unwieldy and had questionable mechanisms for collecting taxes.  He was concerned that the new Constitution would be a radical departure from the existing charter, that the taxes collected would take a larger share than what the people were accustomed to, and that one [Federal] overarching government would be a juggernaut. In Paper No. 4, Centinel invoked the Swiss model and emphasized that it would be the best for the fledgling nation.  He knew of and lamented the deception practiced by the Founders, who discarded the Articles of Confederation under the false rubric of revising them. In Letter no. 5, Centinel reiterates some key assertions from his previous papers and stresses that America is too large and diverse for a central, overarching government. He states that a key supporter of the federal plan, in a rare moment of candor, admitted to him that the new government would need to be foisted upon the population; that the people would need to be bullied or tricked into accepting it. Centinel further argues that the Constitution will mold the several states into one whole, which will subjugate the citizenry. Read by Eric the Blacksmith.

In his third letter, Centinel warns of the prerequisites to be had by those pushing the new Constitution.  He also warns of the force that would be wielded by those same proponents, and to be on guard against treachery disguised as benevolence. In Letter 2, Centinel cautioned that the fledgling government would engage in power grabs, taking more powers than initially granted.  He is concerned that trial by jury will be at risk due to federal courts' overreach. While it could have been argued that Centinel impetuously claimed the Constitution would give federal courts sway over matters between states and their citizens, since that time, appellate court rulings (especially those vacating controversial state ballot initiatives) have added support to Centinel's assertions. You've all heard about the Federalist Papers, but how many of you have heard of the Anti-Federalist Papers? A leading Anti-Federalist and a Pennsylvanian, Centinel was believed to have been Samuel Bryan, who lived up to his pen name by warning Americans of the dangers of a centralized government. In his first Letter, he extols the importance of common-law rights such as a free press and freedom from unjust search and seizure. He warns against an over-reliance on the structure of government, when instead, the elected public servants' accountability to the people should be paramount. Read by Eric the Blacksmith.
