Westside Christian Fellowship

Summary: Sermons from Westside Christian Fellowship and Pastor Shane Idleman. Pastor Shane emphasizes the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and authority. We affirm the truth of the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of God. We believe that Jesus Christ is God. Because of our sin - for all have sinned sin - we are in need of a savior, so Christ came as the sacrifice to pay the price to redeem us. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, died for our sins, and rose again on the third day to make a way for us to join him in heaven for eternity. We believe in a literal heaven and hell, and believe that the only way to heaven is through Christ. Tweet Complete Sermon Notes The Triumphal Entry - Matt. 21 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’” Zechariah wrote during the Babylonian captivity - it was a sign they missed. No earthly King would ride a donkey or a colt. After his arrival in D.C., the king of Saudi Arabia and his entourage made their way to the Four Seasons where they booked every room! Guests at the hotel were forced to switch hotels after the king rented every room on every floor. Reports say he even brought his own luxury furnishings to the hotel, including red carpets and gold decorations. FOX NEWS Christ as King - to rule my life - He already rules - it’s a matter of submission. “A Humble Sinner is in a Better Condition than a Proud Angel.” -THOMAS WATSON “That it might be fulfilled” - Promises from the KJV Philippians 4:19  - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 1:20  - For all the promises of God in him [are] yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God...Philippians 4:13  - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  Waiting Patiently. Making Decisions that align with His Word - walk in integrity. Re-adjust the Heart if needed - repenting of ulterior motives, wrong choices, and bad decisions. Titus 1:2  - In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; John 14:18  - I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 2 Corinthians 7:1  - Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Promises should change the way we live: “Perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” On this theme of “fearing God”: PSALM 103:8-13 NKJV - “The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him.” Fearing God directs my steps; it influences my choices; it calms the storm - when I fear God I don’t fear man. Promises need to be reinforced: God’s Truth is living truth. “Not reading God’s Word because you already know what ...

Tweet Complete Sermon Notes The Ten Commandments #3 & #4 The Ten Commandments 3 Ex. 20:7 NKJV “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain [useless, futile], for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” * K. Stuart, Exodus (Vol. 2) published by Broadman & Holman The primary meaning of “misuse the name of the LORD” ...would appear to be invoking his name as guarantor of one’s words. Examples would include promising someone something “by Yahweh,” meaning: “I guarantee you that my promise is true, or Yahweh may kill me or otherwise punish me if I don’t keep my promise,” or giving legal testimony with the meaning of “I swear that my testimony in this legal matter/before this court is true with the guarantee that Yahweh may kill me or otherwise punish me if it isn’t.” In other words, the most basic, core idea behind this commandment is the prohibition of perjury. We know that our character is questionable to we say… “I swear to God.” I swear by Yahweh with fingers crossed behind the back. Today, failure to “keep” our commitments is a BIG problem - Let your yes… Psalm 15 - “1 Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? 4...the one who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind…” We must remember, however, that the commandment is worded generally enough to encompass any misuse of Yahweh’s name—from making light of it or overtly mocking it, to speaking about Yahweh in any way disrespectfully, to using it as...a name under social pressure to have one’s family “look orthodox” when in fact their beliefs were pagan/idolatrous. I believe in God, but your lifestyle says otherwise. Example: a barely covered recording artist stands at the Grammy Awards for a song about lust and greed, and then THANKS GOD. On the eve of one of his battle campaigns, the emperor Napoleon… 'Transgender Jesus' - The play, ‘The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven’ - "Join Queen Jesus for a revolutionary queer ritual in which bread is shared, wine is drunk and familiar stories are reimagined by a transgender Jesus…” To speak Yahweh’s name was to recognize his awesome power and holiness and even to invite his response to one’s particular situation at the moment. Those who had not obeyed Yahweh might well fear even to mention his name out loud lest he respond by appearing in some fashion among them. Thus Amos 6:10 describes those wishing no contact with Yahweh’s judgment against them as saying, “Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD.” Mocking vs. Repenting - anyone who calls on the name of the Lord. The punishment for breaking this commandment remains unspecified and therefore could in theory take any form of God’s choosing, from something relatively minor to death. Jeremiah provides examples of serious punishments when, for instance, a prophet speaks lies in Yahweh’s name (a severe example of misusing Yahweh’s name), including death for both the dishonest prophets and those who by believing their dishonest words also participate in the profanation of the divine name (Jer 14:14–16), banishment and death (Jer 27:15), or death at the hand of captors in exile (Jer 29:21). Stuart, D. K. (2006). Exodus (Vol. 2, p. 456). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers. Be VERY careful when saying, “God told me...” SIDENOTE: Is It True That The Name Jesus Is Really A Pagan Corruption Of The Name Zeus? Some Christians say we have to use the Hebrew name, Yashua.

Tweet Complete Sermon Notes Can I Divorce Because of Abandonment or Abuse? Introduction: Move cautiously and carefully - only God can really answer this question. I’m a big fan of restoration A Focus on the Family newsletter stated that when a research team studied 5,232 married adults who were interviewed in the late 1980s, they discovered that 645 of them were unhappily married. Five years later, these same adults (some divorced, separated, or still married) were interviewed again. The study revealed that two-thirds of the unhappily married spouses who stayed together were actually happier five years later. The opposite is often true for those divorced. Although those who divorce may temporarily escape the pain, divorce introduces new emotional and relational difficulties. Matthew 19:9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” Let me take this opportunity to speak to the Christian who had no solid scriptural grounds for divorce, yet chose to leave. This is serious. We would not intentionally walk into the enemy’s camp, yet this is what we do when we walk out from under God’s covering. The choices we make today will influence the quality of our life tomorrow. Sin takes us farther than we want to go, keeps us longer than we want to stay, and costs us more than we want to pay. For some, it’s not too late. Repent and return to God - HE can restore your life, and in some cases, your marriage. HOPE FOR THE HURTING: Our marriage was not in God’s will * Except for abandonment. 1 Corinthians 7:10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. Separate to 1. reconcile or 2. stay single I believe that abuse would fall under this umbrella - “But even if she does depart.” Spousal Abuse is an Epidemic - emotional abuse: cruel and violent treatment. They tear them down and use the kids against them. They use the scriptures as weapons. Physical Abuse - coward / deep repentance needs to take place. One of the biggest obstacles when seeking direction, is to become involved in another relationship soon after the divorce or separation. This severely hinders the ability to follow God’s lead. Many have plan B in case God doesn’t move quick enough. I’m astonished at the number of people with back-up plans. They keep a boyfriend or girlfriend on the back-burner, on low-heat, just in case restoration does not occur. 12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.” VIEW 1: Does not mean that when a Christian is deserted by an unbelieving spouse he or she is free to remarry. It means that the Christian is not bound to fight in order to preserve togetherness.
