After David's sin with Bathsheba and repentance, a famine hits the land. David inquired of the Lord and God said the famine was the result of Saul genocide of the Gibeonites. David, in turn, went to the Gibeonites and asked what may I do to make atonement. The Gibeonites asked for the death of seven of Saul's descendants. King David, the benevolent monarch, sits in his palace and declares these words: “is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” Then, David learns that Jonathan, his best friend, has a surviving son named Mephibosheth, who is lame in both feet.
