Shihan ("teacher of teachers") Carl Brown started his judo training in 1956. In 1967, he took second place in the Heavyweight Judo Championship of the South in Jacksonville. The next two years, he won first place. At 57, he is preparing to return to shiai competition. Brown holds the rank of Hichidan, 8th degree Judo Black Belt. He also is a Black Belt in Ju-Jitsu and holds Grandmaster status, Red Sash, in Imua Kuon-Tao Kung Fu. Shihan Brown is a life member of both the United States Judo Association and the United States Martial Arts Association. He has taught judo in four states. A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law (class of 1976), Brown practiced law and held local elective office in the 70s and 80s.He is the author of THE LAW AND MARTIAL ARTS (OHARA 1996)

Anshu Christa Jacobson; Headmistress of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo, is one of the most sought after instructors in the traditional and eclectic martial traditions. Her many years of training in several martial arts has awarded her the ranks of Shodan or higher in many Martial Arts including the only non-Japanese to receive Menkyo Kaiden (The highest level license that exist in Japanese martial arts) and named successor / inheritor of the Tomo Ryu tradition of Shinobijutsu from Master Ichiro Kobayashi honored by Master Hayashi Nakashima.

Bas Rutten is a Dutch mixed martial arts fighter and color commentator. He was a three time King of Pancrase, former Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight Champion, and is a certified MTBN Thai Boxing instructor, Pancrase instructor, and has a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kyokushin karate and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is also the founder of "The Bas Rutten System" and the author of various martial art books and videos. He holds notable wins over Frank Shamrock, Masakatsu Funaki, Kevin Randleman, Guy Mezger and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka.

Kaicho David Farzinzad is the founder of IKU (International Kyokushinkai Union), which was established in 2000.Kaicho Farzinzad is the first and last person to be awarded the 5th degree from Sosai Oyama under age 30, making him the youngest 5th Dan in Kyokushin history.

Seventh degree black belt, Sensei Jerry Figgiani, has been training in the martial arts since 1977. He is the co-owner of East Coast Black Belt Academy which has been established in the Middle Island community of New York for the past 19 years and was voted the No. 1 Dojo by the Long Island Press. In November of 2009, Sensei Figgiani founded the Shorin Ryu Karatedo International which promotes the study of Okinawan karate.

Another major format of full-contact sport karate is known as knockdown karate or sometimes Japanese full contact karate. This style of sport fighting was developed and pioneered in the late 1960s by the Kyokushinkai karate organization in Japan, founded by Masutatsu Oyama. In fighting the competitors traditionally wear no gloves, padding or body protection other than groin guards (although local regulations sometimes enforce exceptions to this tradition), but it is bare knuckle fighting. Sensei Michelle, SFMAI's Executive Director, is a martial artist, Laban Certified Movement Analyst, Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist and has a background in professional dance and theatre. Along with her regular SFMAI schedule of classes and special workshops, she teaches Anatomy and Kinesiology at the Manhattan Center for Alexander Technique, is on the guest faculty for the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, Dalton High School, and Broadway Dance Center.
