In this episode we welcome Canadian comic artist/filmmaker Diane Obomsawin. Also known by her pen-name Obom, Diane has been a staple of the Montreal underground comics scene since the mid-80s. Among her most recent comic projects is "J'aime les Filles", a collection of ten reflections by women on their first loves, four of which having been recently adapted into the animated short film "I Like Girls". Produced by Marc Bertrand at the National Film Board of Canada, the film has already been critically acclaimed and garnered the Grand Prize for Independent Short at last year's OIAF. "I Like Girls" will be screening at Animafest Zagreb next week and is also part of the official selection of this year's Annecy International Animated Film Festival. In this episode we welcome Kim Noce of Mew Lab to the podcast, whose latest film 'Love in Idleness' was commissioned for Still Shakespeare, an exciting new series of experimental animation commissions, inspired by original research by Sally Barnden and produced in partnership with the London Shakespeare Centre at King's College London and animation companies Film Club at Th1ng and Sherbet. The film ideas were developed during workshops supported by the Cultural Institute at King's College London. 'Love in Idleness' it is a short animated film exploring the fleeting delusional love relationship between Titania and Bottom.The film focuses on the transformation and transfiguration of the two characters in the act of a frantic lovemaking. Scratchy animated lines, morphed body parts, fragments of flesh intersect and crash together into the crude rhythmical act performed by the deluded donkey and the tricked woman. In our first episode of 2017 we give a long overdue welcome to New York-based Latvian animation director Signe Baumane (with producer Sturgis Warner) whose long-established gift for animation that takes on notably adult social themes spanning love, sex and mental health includes the shorts 'Teat Beat of Sex' and the independent feature 'Rocks In My Pockets'. Signe's latest project is 'My Love Affair With Marriage' is presently seeking funds through crowdfunding and will tell the story of young Zelma’s developing understanding of her place in society as a woman by mimicking other girls she perceives to be perfect themselves, unaware of the damage this will cause to her relationships later in life. Along the way she is accompanied by four singing Mythology Sirens – who put pressure on her to conform to society’s expectations – Biology, a character who ‘kindles the chemical processes in Zelma’s brain’.
