Showbiz Sandbox 621: Summer Box Office Is Much Cooler Than Expected | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:27:51

In a year which boasted a bevy of summer blockbusters, moviegoers haven’t been turning up at theaters for some of the more highly anticipated releases. Instead, big budget titles such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Elemental,” “The Flash,” and even “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” among others have all had underwhelming opening weekends. Is depressed movie attendance a temporary trend or is it the new normal? Meanwhile, when SAG-AFTRA extended their contract negotiations with producers into July Hollywood averted a dual strike with both actors and writers walking picket lines. The ongoing writers strike is already causing studios to shift release dates back by months if not years. Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including the Academy sets new rules for the Best Picture Oscar, big name directors make their case for the Turner Classic Movies network and Ryan Seacrest takes over as host of “Wheel of Fortune.” Ryan Seacrest Named New ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Host https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/27/business/media/ryan-seacrest-wheel-of-fortune.html ‘Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny’ Clocks Soft $130M Global Bow https://deadline.com/2023/07/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-elemental-spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-china-global-international-box-office-1235427838/ Box Office: ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Stumbles With $60 Million Debut, ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Flops https://variety.com/2023/film/news/box-office-indiana-jones-5-opening-weekend-disappointment-1235660071/ China Box Office: ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Bombs With $2.3M Opening https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/china-box-office-indiana-jones-5-bombs-lost-in-the-stars-1235528181/ CineWorld Restructures After Complete Collapse, CEO and OTher Execs Receive Millions https://deadline.com/2023/06/regal-cineworld-bankruptcy-plan-hearing-attorney-stockholders-mooky-greidinger-1235426411/ Disney Reshuffles Release Dates For Major Releases https://celluloidjunkie.com/digest/disney-reshuffles-release-dates-for-major-releases/ French Filmmaker Luc Besson Definitively Cleared of All Charges in Rape Case https://variety.com/2023/film/global/luc-besson-rape-charges-cleared-1235650624/ Jonathan Majors Return Changes MCU Future https://insidethemagic.net/2023/06/johnathan-majors-innocence-changes-course-of-the-mcu-zg1/ Grammys Add Three New Categories, Including Best African Music Performance and Best Pop Dance Recording

Showbiz Sandbox 620: This Year’s Tony Awards Were Unscripted, Yet Predictable | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:44

This 76th annual Tony Awards ceremony was held last weekend honoring the best and brightest Broadway productions from the past year. Although there was no script for host Ariana DeBose to work due to the writer’s strike. But while the telecast may have been refreshingly unscripted, the winners were fairly predictable with “Kimberly Akimbo” winning Best Musical, Tom Stoppard’s “Leopoldstadt” taking home Best Play and “Parade” picking up the Best Musical Revival trophies. The only question now is which shows will turn their Tony wins into box office gold. Speaking of labor relations in Hollywood, the DGA released some more info on its proposed deal with producers and the reviews are decidedly mixed, especially for helmers who also write. Meanwhile SAG-AFTRA members made it loud and clear that they are ready to strike as well. Entertainment and technology attorney Jonathan Handel joins us to explain the proposed agreement the directors negotiated with producers. He wrote the book on labor in Hollywood, quite literally, as the author of “Hollywood On Strike.” Meanwhile, Tom Cruise is facing another impossible mission. We’ll explain what’s going on in the battle over premium screens. Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including how the French Open is protecting tennis players from toxic social media, why David Byrne’s upcoming Broadway show has no musicians and which summer blockbusters are sinking at the worldwide box office.  Showbiz Sandbox 617: Why the Writers Strike Will Last for Months, Not Weeks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:49:15

There are few people that know more about labor issues in the entertainment business than attorney and journalist Jonathan Handel. So when members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike last week, grinding most television production to a halt, we asked him to join us to discuss all the nuanced details. Handel not only tells us how the last writers strike was resolved in 2007, but explains why the writers are facing an existential problem after the entertainment business was disrupted by streamers. As well, Handel reminds us that the Directors Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild contracts both end on June 30th, forcing producers, studios and networks to negotiate three different contracts at the same time. This is why nobody, not even Handel, believes the writers’ strike will end before July. Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including what Ed Sheeran’s copyright trial victory may mean for the music business, Kevin Costner walks away from “Yellowstone” and this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Movie theater operators from around the world gathered in Las Vegas last week for CinemaCon. Though the last two pandemic suppressed editions of the conference were filled with artificial optimism about the business, this year’s event showcased an industry that had survived and is indeed thriving thanks to a robust release schedule with plenty of new films to show.  Showbiz Sandbox 614: Streaming Fraud Is Costing Musicians Billions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:41

When the recording industry first moved online in the early 2000’s piracy was driven by fans illegally downloading music through services like Napster. These days piracy is being committed by the music industry itself through streaming fraud. Artists and/or record labels are generating millions of fake automated streams to pump up playback numbers with the aim of receiving higher royalty payments. It’s costing musicians a lot of money and, though the industry knows it’s a problem, they haven’t agreed on a way to fix it. Meanwhile, all those news stories during the pandemic about the death of movie theaters aren’t aging very well. Box office is recovering all over the globe thanks to surprise hits such as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” And the best is yet to come since most of this year’s Hollywood blockbusters have yet to be released. Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including how two new “Shrek” films are in the works, the musical “Wicked” the fourth longest-running Broadway show in history, and why the members of Motley Crue are suing each other. ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ Makes History With $378M Global Start; Best-Ever WW Debut For An Animated Film https://deadline.com/2023/04/the-super-mario-bros-movie-opening-china-global-international-box-office-1235318557/ Box Office: ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Opens to Stupendous $204.6M in U.S., Record $375.6M Globally https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/super-mario-bros-movie-box-office-record-opening-1235369721/ China Box Office: Jackie Chan’s ‘Ride On’ Wins Weekend, ‘Suzume’ Hits $100M and ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Stalls https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/china-box-office-super-mario-bros-stalls-1235369990/ ‘Shrek 5’ With Original Cast, Donkey Spinoff With Eddie Murphy, ‘Sing 3’ and More Teased by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri https://variety.com/2023/film/news/shrek-5-donkey-spinoff-secret-life-of-pets-sing-sequels-1235571967/ Mötley Crüe Fake-Plays Live, Guitarist Mick Mars Claims In Profits Participation Suit Against Band Mötley Crüe Fake-Plays Live, Guitarist Mick Mars Claims In Profits Participation Suit Against Band UK Film Studios Hit By Crippling Property Tax Hikes As Talks With Government Agency Continue https://deadline.com/2023/04/uk-film-studios-property-tax-hikes-talks-pinewood-valuation-office-agency-1235318457/ It’s Their Content, You’re Just Licensing it https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/04/arts/dahl-christie-stine-kindle-edited.html Ford to Drop AM Radios From Most New Vehicles in 2024 https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/ford-removing-am-radios-most-new-vehicles-2024

Showbiz Sandbox 610: Hollywood Writers Prep For A Contentious Strike | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:23

The current Writers Guild of America contract with signatories ends on May 1st of this year. Television networks and studios are bracing for what feels like an inevitable writers strike. The guild, which represents TV and movie writers, recently settled on a list of demands it is seeking during upcoming contract negotiations. Meanwhile AMC is defending its decision to raise ticket prices for movie tickets based on where a seat is in the auditorium. This kind of variable pricing is used by some cinemas in Europe, but will all moviegoers in North America find it too confusing? Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including the big winners at this year’s Independent Spirit Awards, the controversy over self-taping auditions and why many of the hot new stars in China are in their forties. ‘Creed III’ Has Knockout $100M+ Global Opening https://deadline.com/2023/03/creed-iii-3-opening-weekend-ant-man-quantumania-avatar-global-international-box-office-1235279607 Michael B.  Showbiz Sandbox 608: The Television Landscape Is Changing FAST | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:51

Major television networks, cable channels and even streamers are all reeling from all of the changes the industry has been undergoing recently. New shows are being canceled before they air. Others disappear after only a single season with all their episodes yanked from streaming libraries. Ratings for linear and cable are way down causing every stakeholder to earn less money from advertising and carriage fees. All of this has caused the industry to get super excited by FAST – Free Ad Supported TV. These are streaming platforms built around existing properties like “Westworld” or original series like “Die Hart” which can be watched on-demand, only with ads peppered in. Annoying perhaps if you subscribe to HBO Max and expected to be able to binge shows that are no longer available on the platform. Of course we also cover the week’s top entertainment headlines including why Roald Dahl’s books are being updated, box office in India rebounds nicely in 2022 and the big winners at this year’s BAFTAs. ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’ Flies To $225.3M WW Opening Amid Softness In Asia Pacific https://deadline.com/2023/02/ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania-opening-weekend-marvel-titanic-avatar-china-global-international-box-office-1235261913/ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Marches to $120M Box Office Opening https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/ant-man-wasp-quantumania-box-office-opening-1235329428/ India Recorded Second Biggest Box Office Year Ever In 2022 With $1.28BN, But Admissions Still Down On Pre-Pandemic Levels https://deadline.com/2023/02/india-box-office-second-biggest-year-kgf-chapter-2-rrr-avatar-1235261274/ Hollywood Is Still in Bed With Putin’s Pariah State — and the Russian Box Office Is Booming https://variety.com/2023/film/global/russia-hollywood-deals-ukraine-war-1235524623/ TV Academy Reverses Documentary Emmy Rule, Once Again Allowing Non-Oscar Nominees to Double Dip https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/tv-academy-documentary-emmy-rule-oscars-double-dip-1235522997/ Roald Dahl Books Rewritten to Remove Language Deemed Offensive https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/feb/18/roald-dahl-books-rewritten-to-remove-language-deemed-offensive BBC Says Producing Ads For China Propaganda Organs Is “Vital” For Funding Its Journalism https://deadline.com/2023/02/bbc-defends-china-ads-1235257697/ Indian Officials Search BBC Offices After Modi Documentary https://apnews.com/article/bbc-modi-new-delhi-india-entertainment-4c0c5029ded8a56783e051dcdf162c38 Film Studios Set For Crunch Talks Over Property Tax That Could “Torpedo” UK Status As Hollywood Rival...

Showbiz Sandbox 607: AMC Sets Sights On Upending Movie Ticket Prices | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:23

AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, announced plans to start charging moviegoers based on where they sit in an auditorium. Preferred seats will cost a few dollars more than standard seats and those in the first two rows will cost less. At a time when movie theaters are having trouble attracting patrons back into cinemas, is this new pricing scheme supposed to actually encourage moviegoing or streaming at home? The good news for movie theater operators is that major studios are rethinking their distribution strategies. Disney is the latest to suggest they will be returning to a theatrical window. During a quarterly earnings call the company’s new old CEO, Bob Iger, also revealed they will be cutting 7,000 jobs.
