In 1954 socialite Elaine Lorillard financed a Jazz Festival at Newport Rhode Island. She hired Jazz promoter George Wein to organize. It became the place to be for many aspects of that great Art for many years. In 1959 Wein expanded the notion to Folk, Blues and Bluegrass. The results are historic.
Here is a film that attempts to engage, involve, provoke, declare and urge. It also inhabits the audacity to dare a viewer to discover his or her voice inside of the twisted tapestry it identifies. This is craftmanship 101 in a world where most cinema has devolved to shooting off mouths & guns.
They come and they go in The Grand Hotel and some never even get to check in. Such was the case with Joe Wade, a very fine Soul singer of the 60's. Little is known about Joe. It appears he recorded some sides for the Dial & Sho Me labels and vanished. If this track is his legacy, it's a moving one.
The 50's and 60's produced many hit records that were covers of R&B & Soul efforts of the day. White was usually right back then, even in the face of Civil Rights. Many talented women like Erma were served only at Black Radio as Janis took FM Radio by Storm. Yup. Race & Love can be a Ball and Chain
These are the Charlie Thomas Drifters. These are the cats who defined 45 RPM grace with tunes such as 'I Count The Tears'. Sure. 'Save The Last Dance' and 'On Broadway' are masterful works. But check out the intimate, tear stained mood on this cut. An exquisite, magical moment.
The craft of the prank phone call was elevated from juvenile past time to the big time by Steve Allen as he engaged them with guests on his late night television program. This was not junk. It was improvised art with recipients who frequently rose to the occasion. This call is a sit down stand out.
Sam Moore is one of the last great soul men standing. The Stax/Volt label did not achieve the glory of Motown but it's roster was rich with dedicated men and women whose contributions to Rhythm and Blues were dynamic. Dig the scene as it happened on the live feed from MSG 25 wonders ago.
He was known as the Actor's Actor. You may know him from 'Twelve Angry Men,' 'Golden Boy' or 'On The Waterfront'. But it was his stage portrayal of Willy Loman that is still spoken about by those who witnessed his dramatic depth and truth. Here is a wonderful portion from a radio version he engaged.
Once upon a time, America produced elegant, not ugly grand wizards. These were wizards of word and thought. We called them poets and many could actually make a decent wage through the exquisite exchange of word and thought. Here is a brilliant example of such divinity.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, this magical and muscular motion picture trailer is possibly worth an infinite number of letters. In an age of divine potential, classic movies have become nearly extinct. Here is a reminder of the amazingly darker grace film can acheive.
“I remember the first time I sat in a nightclub and watched Lightnin’ Hopkins. Man, you know? I was trying to decide then that I didn’t want to work in a furniture warehouse, and I needed something to push me over the falls. That did it.” Tom Waits
Meet The Persuasions: Jerry Lawson, Jesse "Sweet Joe" Russell, Jayotis Washington, Herbert "Toubo" Rhoad, and bassman Jimmy "Bro" Hayes. They were dicovered by Frank Zappa in 1969 and he signed them as the first group for his new label, Bizzare Records. Over 40 years later, they still honor Frank.
Phil Spector produced this Liberty Records recording one year after Timi hit the big time with her incredible vocal performance on 'Hurt' in 1961. Although this effort only ranked a #51 slot in Billboard sales, it shot elegant, musical ammo that remains explosive to this day.
Red Bird Records directed the Spector influenced magic for pop expeditions produced by George 'Shadow' Morton and the recordings of The Shang-ri-Las, Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann, The Dixie Cups, Evie Sands, Dee Dee Warwick, The Ad Libs and The Butterfly’s. They also brought us The Jelly Beans.
Tuli Kupferberg was a poet, a songwriter, a singer, a Fug, an activist and just possibly, The Last Bohemian. Tuli was also my friend. This recitation of his truly wonderful poem displays his heart, warmth, humor and devotion to the mystery of history. We proudly present a great work and a dear man.
