Join me as we discuss:How the Gibson family regularly uses music in their home for learning, as well as poppin'-and-lockin'.  Real articles that prove that this is not some wives-tale crap.5 things music can do for your kid that you want it to do!Music seems to be a universal thing.  Cultures from all across the world have created music in one form or fashion so there seems to be some level of need.  Today we talk science to discuss how this idea is not a load of classical crap, but physiological in nature.  The article shows that music, memory, and emotions all create brain activity in the same part of the brain!  So when music is used, it can have a feedback connection that will link the memory with the music.  Soooo flippin' cool. So what are 5 things music can do for us as parents:Relax and lower stress levels of our kiddos. Lower metabolism and heart rate to help learn. Pull kids out of tired states. Stimulate the brain to solve complex problems. Help kids remember values like "don't bite your friends!"Also, we cover the age-old question: "my kids music is high-energy and chaotic.  Should I let them listen to it and will it hurt them?"  SHOW NOTESArticle on Music, Memory, and Emotions Subscribe to The Family Podcast Network:

 Episode 164: Kids and Weight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:37

Join me as we discuss:The definition of overweight and obese and how your kiddo, and you, might fit the obese category without knowing it.What I think are the main causes of our obesity in America.  What I think are the real solutions to our kiddo's, and our, obesity issues. There is no doubt that there is a rising occurrence of obesity in our culture, and even amongst our kiddos.  Many parents have tried themselves to loose weight by cutting back on their foods, cutting out sodas, and exercising heavily.  Now, I agree that these are crucial pieces of the weight-loss elements. With that said, I also think that there is a major piece of the puzzle missing that isn't about cutting calories or increasing your output.   I think the quality of our food has gone to crap.  With the onset of mono-cropping we are yanking all of the nutrients out of our soils.  With fewer minerals to pull from the soil, there is less in the veggie we are consuming.Or indirectly, there is less mineral content in the plants that cows are eating and then, subsequently, there is less mineral content in us.  We now have to consume more to fill that nutritional goal.  Combine that with the onset of highly processed foods.  There is little we can do calorically or with exercise that makes a significant difference.  So what do I think we can do.  Here is my list:Grow your own food. Go organic when possible (even though American "organic" isn't fully organic). Buy local.  Farmers markets are great places to find great good garden-grown produce that hasn't been shellacked with crap.SHOW NOTESSubscribe to The Family Podcast Network:
