Please join us Sunday, May 6, 2012 as we discuss the merits of attending church.  The call in number is 310-982-4273.   Let's talk about a subject that a Christian actually put forth to other believers.  The blog post asked fellow believers if church was a waste of time due to a number of reasons.   Why are the economic disparities in many highly religious neighborhoods so glaring? Why are the crime rates in many highly religious neighborhoods so high? Why are the teen pregnancy and std rates in many highly religious neighborhoods out of control? Why hasn't the prayer of the righteous been answered and fulfilled in what seems to be a vicious perpetual cycle of dysfunction? Why do you need to pray at all if your life was predestined?  Is God's will subject to negotiation? Why is the passuh and his inner circle the only ones acquiring wealth?  In most cases, it's a matter of smoke and mirrors. Why isn't your passuh sowing seeds into good fertile ground?  I mean isn't that what he is imploring you to do everytime you go to church?  Why isn't s/he and the church held to the same standard?

Debbie Goddard is the campus outreach coordinator at the Center for Inquiry Transnational in Amherst, NY. She is also the director of African Americans for Humanism, a program of the Council for Secular Humanism. Before working for CFI, she participated in local freethought groups in the greater Philadelphia region and helped organize and support campus groups internationally as a student volunteer. She has also been involved with progressive issues and LGBT activism. Debbie’s first experience with organized freethought was in 2000, when she traveled to Amherst, New York, for a Center for Inquiry Student Leadership Conference. Inspired by the experience, she began attending freethought, humanist, atheist, and skeptic group meetings in the greater Philadelphia region, including in New York City, New Jersey, and central Pennsylvania. She also started a CFI-affiliated campus group at her college.

The Protestant Church points the finger of shame and condemnation at the Catholic Church for the sex, pedophile, and ephebophile scandals that have plagued them over the years.  However, when confronted with the very exact issues in their community, there is a deafening silence about the matter in most cases.    There are usually three responses given, especially in the Pentecostal circle.  The first, and most prevalent response, is silence.  The second, and most damning response, is ‘touch not my anointed’ or ‘judge not.’  The third, and most disturbing, is that the victims must have wanted to be victimized and somehow brought it on themselves.   We have to address these issues and they need to confront the aberrant behavior that is being displayed in their very own community.  It’s not as though they aren’t aware of the issues because you find plenty of information here,here, and here.  Please feel free to forward them the links.   Call in to chat about what’s on your mind or experiences.
