I learned the song many years ago from the recording: Grayson and Whitter. Recordings of Grayson and Whitter, County 513, LP (196?), trk# 6 [1928/07/31] (Girl I Left Behind - I) which also goes under the title Maggie Walker Blues. This setting is the most satisfying of all the many ways I've done this song over the years.

Dear Old Illinois: from Charlie Bese via Indian Creek Delta Boys: Prairie du Rocher ("The Rock Prairie" in French) is a village in Randolph County, Illinois, United States. Founded in the French colonial period in the American Midwest, the community is located near bluffs that flank the east side of the Mississippi River along the floodplain often called the "American Bottom". The population was 604 at the 2010 census.
from Henry Hall via Garry Harrison: "A fella named Henry Hall, lived down in southern tip of the state, down in Cave-in-Rock, Ill, and he played a few good ones, we never did meet him, he was recorded back in the 1950s . . . so we knew him from recordings of him, but we got to know his family".
Fiddle in GDGD...fingerpicking guitar and clawhammer, of course!
From the Bottomlanders via Garry Harrison, who comments 'This one comes from a couple of fellas down in Old Shawnee Town, down on the Ohio River side of Illinois, way down at the south tip. (Gallitan Co.) They played the fiddle and banjo, Vince Uselton played the banjo and Ed Bradley played the fiddle and they called themselves The Bottomlanders and once again they didn?t have any name for it so we called it the Gallitan Special'.
