Another version, on my Rickard banjo.
I got this from the Fuzzy Mountain String Band album. The Fuzzies got it from Alan Jabbour, who collected it from Henry Reed. According to the FMSB album notes, Mr. Reed did not have a name for this tune but he agreed that it sounded pretty close to the better known tune by the same name. I really like the quirky beginning of the A part on an Em. My rendition is played in standard G tuning (gDGBD) on a 1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #2.
Many know of and play Ashokan Waltz. This other waltz by Jay Ungar has a similar feel -- a lovely tune written in modern times, but as old-timey as I like.
An original tune by Erynn Marshall, whose other tune Madison County Waltz, was a recent old-time Tune of the Week. Her compositions would be recent, but they have a wonderful old-time feel. For Bass Cove Waltz I combined it with cello banjo accompaniment.
Sally In The Garden
Jeff Goehring, Ward Jarvis
Live gig. Just banjo and vocal. The banjo is a 1923 Gibson TB-3 Trapdoor conversion
Played on C scale banjo in double F tuning.
Reference recording for the tab posted--view my tabs here.
For the old-time Tune of the Week, 5/5/17, Obama's March to the White House is a stately, but lively tune composed by the fiddling Canote twin, Greg. I heard Adam Hurt's beautiful playing of it before this TOTW made me aware of the Canote Brothers own version.
Sound demo of the whaling banjo (oak pot and neck) with a wash rag rolled up and stuffed in as a mute. I think this improves the sound tremendously.
Emory Bailey. G minor tuning fDGBbD. I learned this from Bob Lanham's version here on BHO.
Obama's March to the White House
Cousin Sally Brown
Banjo is set in the "Half Shaved" tuning (f#DADE). This is an Oscar Wright tune that I first heard on the Fuzzy Mountain String Band album way back when.
