Walking In The Parlor
This version of Wolf Creek is from Harvey "Pappy" Taylor (b.1894), recorded in 1974. Slowed down from the original, it makes a pretty piece in fDGCD tuning. DOI stands for Dear Old Illinois, a compilation of songs and fiddle tunes by Garry and Steve Harrison and Jo Burgess. Wolf Creek is the old-time Tune of the Week for 3/13/20.
A fiddle tune often played by fiddler James Bryan. This multitrack recording is a "skeleton" version of the tune [just can't hit all the fiddle 8th notes anymore] and features medlody banjo and fiddle in the first round and throughout, guitar starting with latter part of round one, and bass and lightly played clawhammer rhythm starting in the second round. Earbuds improve audibility of all the parts.
I've loved this tune ever since hearing Mary Z Cox play it. I don't know where Iearned my unique B part, but with Shenandoah Falls as the Tune of the Week for 3/6/20, I decided to learn the more traditional B part, played the second time through here.
Also known as "Scotch Mary"
Paul Perkins on the 5 string and me on the fiddle. Recorded in my kitchen on a Tascam DR-05
I did my own banjo version
I learnt this tune at the weekly jam in the Golden Ball in York. This is the first recording of my J Dallas banjo (c. 1920) after I fixed it up with a new calfskin head, 5th string tuner and nylgut strings.
Frailing OJC in sawmill tuning. Based on Steve Baughman's version on his Power of Claw DVD, and instructional video for clawhammer guitar. My version is simplified from Steve's version. Recorded with Neumann KM 184mt condenser mike, using Audacity and laptop computer. Banjo is a Cedar Mt Brainjo Hobart model.
