Red Haired Boy/ Old Mother Flannagan

A traditional Irish song about a man named Feilim who took his small boat and it crashed. It may have been an Ulster chieftain whose land had been taken. You can feel the admiration and sympathy in the music. The Irish have a great talent for such expression.

This is a clawhammer arrangement of a tune that I first learned for tackhead minstrel banjo, from James Buckley's 1860 'New Banjo Method', played on a modern steel string open back banjo.

This is my version of Jody Stecher's version of this classic tune. I make a TON of errors, so it's nothing to admire. But it was fun to do, regardless. Jody is my teach and the first 30-odd seconds are more-or-less what he teachers. The rest is my elaboration or interpretation. Sorry for the lousy tuning and the numerous errors.

For Don Borchelt's TOTW. It's a happy, meandering tune for having such a title, but I figure the sheep ranchers are dipping their sheep in sheep dip, thus the picture of working together and accomplishing the job.

This is a tune from western Pennsylvania fiddler Sarah Armstrong, as transcribed by musicologist Samuel Bayard in his Hill Country Tunes collection, published in 1944. This recording comes from the Clifftop jam I had this past August with Don Couchie and Tim Rowell. Don is playing the fiddle, Tim is doing that neat low, growley clawhammer picking, and I am doing the three-finger picking on my semi-fretless Tubaphone in open D tuning.
