For the old-time Tune of the Week, 11/7/15, the wanderings of this tune mystify me. With that title it's actually said to have come from Arkansas via a Missouri family who migrated to Oklahoma and then somehow it got to California, my home state, where it was recently taught. It feels like a polka to me and I bet they polka in Michigan.

Ducks on the Millpond | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Don Summers, a fine fiddle player from Georgia, came by the house last week for some front porch picking here in Dallas. Joining us was Travis Brink from just up the road. Travis played guitar and I played banjo and this recording was made off my cell phone. I hadn't played this tune in years, so was excited when Don offered it up.

I'm not good enough on banjo yet to add it myself, but if someone can help me out and get a good banjo recording to go with my fiddle tune, I can combine them on my computer. I am going to pay the winner 25.00 for the best submission. I know it's not very much, but might be incentive enough to do it. If you want to film yourself playing it, I'll put it in a youtube video with me playing fiddle and give you credit for the banjo music. I played the tune twice and then left open space for the banjo to play twice, and then at the end, you play along or do whatever you like. I think clawhammer would best suit this tune, by I'll let your recording speak for itself. Here's my email....garysizemorejr@gmail.com........and I'll announce the winner by this time next week. That'll give me time to put the recordings together and see which one really adds what it needs. Thanks!

CH take on a French Canadian Reel. G tuning. Wildwood

Cousin Sally Brown | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

A tune learned from the playing of North Carolina fiddler Marcus Martin (1881 - 1974). I hear a sad and serious melody.

Scolding Wife (CB) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

As played by North Carolina fiddler Marion Reece (1874 - 1941). I can hear the scolding in the A part very clearly!

Wandering Boy (CB) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For the old-time Tune of the Week 10/30/15. Many pickers have been inspired by Adam Hurt's lovely version. I thought I'd go back a little farther historically speaking and listened to DeCosta Waltz's Southern Broadcasters recordings of the 1920's, which is very similar to Adam's. I believe that the other historic recordings of The Wandering Boy (i.e. The Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers) are related. The lyrics are sad and meaningful, sung from a mother's view.
