The number of deaths in the Friday violence that shook many parts of Uttar Pradesh over the citizenship law protests has now reached 15 but that number could rise. There were violent protests in west UP's Rampur today and while the police claim they are cracking down those who indulged in vandalism across the state, are they also going after soft targets?

Historian Ramachandra Guha, detained during protests in Bengaluru today over the citizenship law, said the enforcement of Section 144, a British-era ban on large gatherings, is the mark of a "paranoid, fearful and insecure" regime. He called it the "fourth or fifth" crisis the republic was going through since its independence. "Shutting internet in Delhi? What signal will it send to the world? Is this a self-confident India," Ram Guha questioned, speaking to NDTV after his release around four hours later.

People in different cities protested today against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The protests were very peaceful in many cities, still Section 144 was imposed in some cities. Was it really needed? Amid the countrywide protests, Mamta Banerjee demanded a UN-monitored referendum on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the NRC today. Poll strategist and JDU Vice President Prashant Kishor has openly opposed his party's support to the Citizenship Amendment Act. Speaking to NDTV, he said, that the combination of Citizenship Amendment Act with National Registry of Citizens is 'unacceptable because the moment you combine it with the NRC it becomes discriminatory not only on the basis of the religion but also on the basis of the class and you're making all those who are poor irrespective of whichever cast or religion they belong to go through unimaginable suffering'. Prashant Kishor, who recently met JDU chief Nitish Kumar said, "party has always said that there is no need for NRC in Bihar and he has assured me that there is no reason for him or for the party to change this stance, and I have full faith that there will be no NRC in Bihar, come what (may)." On nationwide NRC, Mr Kishor saidm "non -JP chief ministers are 16 and that account for 65 % of the Indian population...I have no doubt in my mind that it is not possible".

Refusing to succumb to pressure from the BJP over his "Rape in India" remark, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said he will not apologise for speaking out the "truth" and sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "destroying" the country's economy. The Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is unconstitutional and the court will decide on its validity, Congress leader Kapil Sibal said today, hours after the first petition challenging the proposed law was filed in the Supreme Court. Kapil Sibal is representing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in its petition before the Supreme Court.
