Word of the Day – CursoryTranscriptHi everyone.  Today's word of the day is cursory.  Cursory means to do something hasty, to do something quickly without careful attention to detail.  Cursory is often paired with the word “glance”.  And we can say “cursory glance”.  A cursoryglance is usually referring to looking at something quickly.  Glance is a quick look for maybe a second so we can describe the way we're reading or the way that we're doing something by saying, “We gave it a cursory glance. We didn't read through thoroughly.” So cursory is opposite of thorough.  We can use it in this example,“Tom gave a cursory glance at the news this morning and he knew only that there was a bomb threat in the subway but if he had read more carefully he would have also known that the subway was shutdown this morning.”Once again, the word cursory is usually paired with the word “glance”.  So, I hope that you can use this word cursory in your everyday lives.  Thank you for listening to Word of the Day at Practicus. You can find the full script at Practicus.co.kr.

 9/1/2011 - Adamant | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21

© www.practicus.co.kr Word of the Day – Adamant Transcript Hi everyone.  Today's word of the day is  adamant.   Adamant means to be insistent upon  something.  It's characterized as being persistent, unyielding, sometimes even stubborn.   And we use  this to describe a person's actions when they continually do something.  One example could be, “The senator adamantly opposed the national bill to cut teachers' salaries.  He argued if the  bill passed it would deter students from pursuing jobs in education and eventually lead to a decline in  quality education.”    So in this way, adamant was used as an adverb: adamantly opposed.   Another way you can use adamant in a less serious way is in this way,   “The little boy was adamant about getting a robot for Christmas leaving pictures of robots all  over the house so that his mom would be sure to take the hint.”   In this way, the word adamant means determined, stubborn, and there's a tad bit of annoyance.    So, he's so adamant, he's so stubborn, that he leaves pictures all over the house and in this sentence it  could mean or signify that he's creating a bit of annoyance for this mother.   Thank you for listening for today's word of the day.  I hope you can use  adamant in your  everyday lives.  You can see the script is at Practicus.co.kr.  Have a good day.

 8/31/2011 - Plagiarism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48

© www.practicus.co.krWord of the Day – PlagiarismTranscriptHi everyone, this is Paul and today's word of the day is  plagiarism.   Plagiarism is a noun and definition of  plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author, and the representation of them as one's own work. So what does that mean?So  plagiarism, the noun, and  plagiarize, the verb, is very similar to copying, where you copy someone's words or work.  But instead of using copying, plagiarize has a negative connotation.  Because sometimes when you're copying something it can just be something simple, it could not be in a bad sense.   But plagiarize, whenever you say “plagiarize” there is a negative connotation and it means that you're doing something wrong.  So another situation where you're working with a partner.  And you have to finish an essay for school.  There's no time and you want to finish early.  So your friend suggests, “Let's go to Google and copy an essay online and write our name on it.”  And you would say something like this,“That's plagiarism.  We'll get in trouble.  Let's just write it in our own words.”“The teacher said plagiarism is not allowed.”“If you plagiarize you will fail the class.”  So in this way, you're using plagiarism to describe copying the work from Google into your own essay.  So simply, if you want to describe  plagiarism it is  “stealing the words as your own”.  And the opposite of plagiarism is “writing it in your own words”.  So if you need more information or you would like the full transcript go to Practicus.co.kr.  Have a great and take care.
