Raising Black Boys (Full session) - Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:00

According to Jawanza Kunjufu, author of the bestselling Raising Black Boys and a father of two sons, "The spirits of too many of our boys have been broken. During the preschool and kindergarten years, our boys are energetic and curious. They love learning and ask thousands of questions. There's a glow in their eyes. By the time they reach high school, however, that glow has been replaced with suspicion and anger." The statistics paint a disturbing picture of life for Black boys:   72 percent of African American boys lack a father in the home. Nationally, African American males have a 53 percent chance of dropping out of high school. In some districts, the rates are significantly higher. While African Americans make up 17 percent of the total school population, they account for 32 percent of the suspensions and 30 percent of all expulsions. One of three Black males are involved with the penal system. African American male teens are placed in remedial or special education classes at triple the rate of their white counterparts, and they are underrepresented in gifted and honors classes. The top three influences on African American boys today are peer pressure, rap music, and television. However, Kunjufu believes that the greatest problems facing Black boys are a lack of spirituality and fatherlessness.

Keynote: Mutulu Olugabala M1 of Dead Prez | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:49:00

The one-time president for the New York City branch of the radical black nationalist National People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, M-1 caused some controversy in the underground rap scene as a part of the critically acclaimed and ostensibly socialist Dead Prez twosome. While he and Stic.man were in between labels, each ventured out with his own solo project. M-1 was inspired to put together a solo album in part by doing production work for other artists, including Mississippi rapper David Banner, but also from collaborating with Italian jazz guitarist Fabrizio Sotti (who produced most of jazz diva Cassandra Wilson's 2003 Glamoured album). In March 2006, M-1 released the Confidential LP as a CD/DVD combination, with contributions from Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip, and Cassandra Wilson herself. The first single, "'Til We Get There," did fall below the radar of mainstream airplay, but not before the album reached the number 23 spot on the independent chart and 52 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. M-1, aka Mutulu Olugabala is an African rapper, activist and author known for his work as one half of the political hip hop duo Dead Prez along with his life long friend Stic.man aka Clayton Gavin. His choice of the name "M-1" is likely a reference to the semi-automatic rifle. The M1 Garand rifle is notable as the mainstay of American infantry in WWII, and Malcolm X held the M1 carbine variation in a famous photo printed in Life magazine in 1964. M-1's first solo album Confidential was released on March 21, 2006 through Sotti/Koch Records. Following Confidential M-1 worked on the album Can't Sell Dope Forever by Dead Prez/Outlawz. M-1 is also featured in the UK documentary, Guilty or Innocent of Using the N Word. He can also be seen acting in Chappelle's Show comedy sketches.

BLACK HISTORY "screwed and chopped" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:32:00

by Paul Ruffins   Black history may have seemed “lost, stolen or strayed” at one time, but since then much of the African American past has been rediscovered and reanalyzed. Unfortunately, this new research hasn’t yet filtered down to high schools, and many students and others still base their thinking on the information that existed in 1968 when CBS News produced the film Black History: Lost, Stolen or Strayed. At that time, many important works on Black history were more than thirty years out of date. For example, W.E.B. DuBois wrote History of the African Slave Trade in 1896 and Black Reconstruction in 1935, and Dr. Lorenzo Green finished The Negro in Colonial New England, 1620-1776 in 1942. Over the past thirty years, historians, anthropologists, and other scholars such as John Blassingame, Dr. Eugene Genovese and Ira Berlin have revolutionized the study of African American life, history, and culture. Some facts are indisputable. A few free Africans came to the New World with Columbus. African slaves first arrived in the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean in 1502 and came to what was to become the United States of America in 1619. Over the next 250 years, some African Americans were freed or freed themselves. The U.S. banned the external slave trade in 1808, and states from Maine to Maryland gradually enacted abolition laws. Unfortunately, some historical questions may never be answered. For example, although estimates range from thirteen million to thirty million, we will probably never know exactly how many people were taken out of Africa during the slave trade because boats and people were counted differently in different African and European languages. Black Issues presents some of the latest thinking to help educators lay to rest these ten common myths and misconceptions that distort and oversimplify nearly 500 years of African American history.

"In God WE TRUST"when and why they put a deity on our money | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:11:00

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins. From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, and read: Dear Sir: You are about to submit your annual report to the Congress respecting the affairs of the national finances. One fact touching our currency has hitherto been seriously overlooked. I mean the recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins. You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were not shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation? What I propose is that instead of the goddess of liberty we shall have next inside the 13 stars a ring inscribed with the words PERPETUAL UNION; within the ring the allseeing eye, crowned with a halo; beneath this eye the American flag, bearing in its field stars equal to the number of the States united; in the folds of the bars the words GOD, LIBERTY, LAW. This would make a beautiful coin, to which no possible citizen could object. This would relieve us from the ignominy of heathenism. This would place us openly under the Divine protection we have personally claimed. From my hearth I have felt our national shame in disowning God as not the least of our present national disasters. To you first I address a subject that must be agitated.

What does it mean to play The "WHT man's" GAME? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:55:00

Play the white man is a term used in parts of England meaning to be decent and trustworthy in one's actions.[citation needed] The origin of the phrase is obscure. The term carries with it a reference to an obligation which many English civil administrators in the latter years of the British Empire might have considered themselves to be under: that is, the obligation to uphold respect for their county abroad by maintaining personal standards of behaviour and fairness which darker-skinned native peoples could respect[citation needed]. The act of calling upon someone to remember his personal moral obligations in this way is expressed in Rudyard Kipling's poem The White Man's Burden. On the other hand, the racially neutral colour white has long been associated with pureness and virtue. A similar expression in the United States is "That's mighty white of you", meaning, "Thank you for being fair". [1]
