David & Nathan

God sends Nathan to speak truth into David’s life and cast light on the darkness of David’s hidden sin. Nathan risks his life to confront King David’s sin, knowing that obeying the one true King is more important than his own fears or desires. Nathan’s boldness encourages us to humbly confront those in our community with their sin, while David’s confession and repentance shows us God’s mercy in dealing with our sin.

In 2 Samuel 11, we find David at the peak of his power. His army is going to battle, and instead of engaging in work and going with them, he stays behind in idleness. This decision, and the choices that follow, create space and vulnerability for David to engage in a sinful pattern of behavior. Because of our sin nature and the corrupt world in which we live, we have to allow community to be involved in our decision-making. Through this narrative, we are able to see the importance of biblical community and how our sinful decisions can lead us to a calloused heart.

Once David is made King of Israel, God reveals the sovereign movement and direction taking place over David’s life. As he recognizes the piece he is playing in God’s redemptive plan, David is driven to humility and worship. He is shocked by the weight of God’s mercy and the faithfulness He promises for David’s throne. David’s life is much bigger than a season of kingship; he is instead the beginning of a throne that will reign forever through Jesus Christ.

The Ark of the Covenant represented God’s presence with His people, but it was in a foreign land and absent during Saul’s reign. As David becomes king, he recognizes God’s rightful place as King of Israel and desires to bring the Ark into Jerusalem, the new capital. In David’s first attempt, he failed to bring the Ark based on God’s instructions and terms, which ended in the death of Uzzah. In his second attempt, however, he brought back the Ark on God’s terms, which ended in celebration and worship. God asks us to come underneath His terms, without negotiation or manipulation, and to fully obey Him in the small moments and the big decisions.

In 1 Samuel 25, we read a story of David, who acts in humility and weakness; Abigail, who acts in humility and strength; and Nabal, who acts in foolishness. Abigail, caught between a fool and a weak man, lives out her Ezer calling. She provides strength and protection for both the weak man and the fool, and supplies shade under which they find respite. And in the midst of a weak moment for David, Abigail offers him the opportunity to redirect and repent.

While the encounter between David and Goliath is a demonstration of David’s faith, the encounter between David and Saul in the cave shows David’s deep desire to follow God’s plan. When Saul enters the very cave that David and his men are using to hide from Saul and his army, David is conflicted with the seemingly opportune moment to kill his enemy. We see that David’s heart is set on God when, instead of taking the “opportunity” to kill Saul, he instead cuts off a piece of Saul’s robe and withstands the test from God. Although David gives into his own desires in this small way, he is troubled about having given in at all. David chooses to trust in God’s plan and the fact that God had anointed Saul as king rather than accelerate his own kingdom by taking matters into his own hands. David puts God at the center of the situation, trusts Him with the ultimate justice and vengeance of Saul, and is able to forgive his enemy without repentance from him or reconciliation.
